Not happy with the privacy nightmare Microsoft is introducing with 'Recall' in Windows 11?

Do consider installing Fedora. I am happy user for a while now. It works perfect and it looks the part!

In the entire history of computing, there has never been a more important time to teach people about than right now.

(And never a worse time for me not to be doing @Linux4Everyone -- so I hope my fellow YouTube and content creators will double down and show people the light!)

Look, I hate like everyone else does, but that it singles out DRM content really isn't surprising - because that's rendered differently and the system knows.

It doesn't know about passwords, because most applications do not annotate their fields/windows for this.

The way how DRM content is handled is obvs entirely problematic in itself, but the context matters a lot for how much malice to assume for Recall rather than oblivious incompetence.

The thing is, if I wanted my computer to record me, I'd want it to record the three sentences I typed without noticing that my app had crashed and whose text has vanished because I was typing into an unresponsive window. How the fuck is a screen recording going to get me those back, huh Microsoft? #Recall

Struggling a bit with the disgusting news about #windows and the #Recall software. I am considering switching to @vanillaos, but it feels like a risk for some reason... Is it worth the trouble of switching?

Although some will be fortunate enough to escape the perils of MS and move to we have to accept for the vast majority this is either simply not allowed by their IT departments or not possible due to the heavy reliance and integration with other Microsoft products that aren’t truely available on Linux. Whilst we should embrace an uptake of Linux we should continue to fight for and just common sense in Windows.

I think 's feature is such an interesting case study of , for what it stands for, the reactions to it, its potential, and what underlies it in the end. Even more so, it's a fascinating case study in how small interventions (and yes, I think it's a rather small intervention) can have much bigger and weirder effects than we think.

Microsoft reading the news, seeing all the hate against lgbtq kids being abused by their parents and thinking, hey that's a great business opportunity for AI!

On a recent episode of Behind the Bastards, the host talked about how abusers were able to infiltrate the left in Germany after the war. They were able to hijack a good movement that was antifascist. They warped it in the worst possible way.

I know a lot of the privacy violating shit in tech is just on accident. But I wonder how much of it is just shitty dudes thinking of new ways to sneak in shit to abuse their partner and kids more effectively.

This tiny PC is now packing the most powerful laptop chip AMD makes!
Funnily enough, Microsoft threw AMD and Intel under the bus.
NONE of the current selling "AI" PCs qualify for the "CoPilot" branding.
Who knows, maybe you don't want that new Microsoft Recall feature on your system anyway?

Good idea. You wouldn't want someone looking at and sharing private information on your screen.

Good morning folks

Asking several IT professionals how they're going to handle Microsoft #Recall and getting a bunch of 'what's that' responses, and considering it's being rolled out already, shit's gonna get real.

DarkestKale,
@DarkestKale@mastodon.social avatar

I asked Bing about #Recall, and gave it a few details and it basically said 'the recommendation would be to limit use of your computer for sensitive uses'

Oh dear.

Wonder how #Recall will go for 'two party recording consent' states with regard to video calls, etc.

On top of the privacy issues raised by constant screencapture feature is the apparent laziness and overreaching nature of the solution. 1/2

The online backlash to #Windows #Recall amuses me tremendously. I started building a similar open-source (non-AI, local only) thing for #Linux a month ago.

It would take screenshots and create a timeline video of your day. It also enabled searching across your past usage of the computer.

The inspiration was an open-source macOS app called "Rem" which does the same thing.

Ah well, I guess I'll abandon that then, as it's going to be seen as toxic thanks to #Microsoft.

Il nuovo Windows Recall sarà un incubo per la privacy:

:windows: https://www.startmag.it/innovazione/perche-lai-di-microsoft-per-il-pc-solleva-timori-per-la-privacy/

“Questo potrebbe essere un incubo per la privacy”, ha commentato alla Bbc il dottor Kris Shrishak, consulente in materia di intelligenza artificiale e privacy. “Il semplice fatto che vengano catturati degli screenshot durante l’uso del dispositivo potrebbe avere un effetto agghiacciante sulle persone.”

Why does want to implement ? It's not about images. It's about modelling what workers do on Windows, and then replacing them.

The most expensive part of a computer is the fallible feelings-filled unpredictable meat sack that operates it.

Google has YouTube, Google Photos, Maps, and a bucket load of search data, Google Analytics, advertising, as well as it's data (e.g. transcriptions). And a bunch of data from Android services. From this data they can model speech, model videos and model advertising systems, and how humans respond to them.

But they can't model what people do on computers.

Amazon has Prime data, and a bucket load of compute. But no operating system data. They can build models based around e-commerce and advertising systems.

But they can't model what people do on computers.

Meta has waves hands enough analytics to model human behaviour in the Metaverse.

But they can't model what people do on computers.

Microsoft has GitHub.
Microsoft has LinkedIn.
Microsoft has SharePoint.
Microsoft has Teams.
Microsoft has Dynamics.
Microsoft has O365.
Microsoft has Windows telemetry data.

Microsoft can model what people do on (Windows) computers. Like fill out spreadsheets.Write emails. Synthesize web pages of research. Interact with colleagues on Teams. Create and edit documents.

Microsoft wants data so they can model what people do with operating systems.

Then replace them.

Imagine a CoPilot that doesn't just write buggy code. Imagine one that also does spreadsheets. That creates documents on SharePoint. That communicates with colleages on Teams. That has a customer pipeline on Dynamics.

That's what Recall is about - 360 degree surveillance of the worker, to model their functions, make them fungible, replicable - and replaceable.
