realn2s,

Looking for

TL;DR: I'm looking for a dual screen adapter which works on an Intel MacBook Pro (ideally with Linux & Windows as well)
If you know one, please share

Some time ago my main display broke 😠

While I try to get it fixed somehow (only way I see at the moment is an repair cafe) I work with 2 display I scavenged.

Nothing easier than that I thought, simply buy a USB-C dock with two HDMI ports. Boy was I wrong.

It works fine on Linux.

On Windows both display use the same resolution which leads to a distorted image on the higher resolution display.

On both external screens show the same image. This is said to be a limit of MacOS but I have a hard time believing this. I can add a second USB-C to HDMI Adapter and both external displays just work fine. Additionally it should be possible daisy chain thunderbolt displays. So it feels rather like an artificial technical issue. E.g. the vendor would need to use different more expensive chip (or really use Thunderbolt).

Can anyone a Dock which supports two or more display on MacOS?

weltraumpirat,

@realn2s I use an elgato Thunderbolt 3 Dock. It works with two 4K displays, one via HDMI and one via DisplayPort, although not without glitches - sometimes it takes a long time to recognize both screens, switches back and forth, or ends up only showing one of them until I reboot. And the Mac uses almost 100% GPU all the time and gets very hot in the summer. I don’t think that’s the dock‘s fault - it’s the Mac. TL;DR: Not perfect, but most times it works well enough for me.

weltraumpirat,

@realn2s Biggest plus is you get a decluttered desk, and it’s easy to switch all your equipment between computers, if like me you have a private and a work machine.

You can also try plugging in one screen on the left of your Mac, and one on the right. That should power both screens, although it was not an acceptable solution for me, because I also needed an external power adapter, and then the desk was just full and ugly.

weltraumpirat,

@realn2s The dock is costly, but it does the trick, and there is only one cable that connects to the laptop - super quick to change, and no more mess.

realn2s,

@weltraumpirat
🙏🏻
Which of the Docks do you have?
There seems to be a "normal", Mini and a Pro.

The Dock supports Power Delivery?

Sadly, it looks like only the Mini is still available in Germany 😠

@realn2s
Sounds like you've got a MacBook with an Intel processor. Yeah, for some reason Apple limits the external desktop expansion on those.

I'm currently using a DisplayLink driver to get around that limitation. I'm not sure that works with all video ports, though.

realn2s,

@gdinwiddie
Thanks. That right
I'll check it out
