billyjoebowers,
stooovie, Icon snapping being absurd again in #macos #bugmagnet
stooovie, @arnan icon snapping behaviour has always been absurd on MacOS. For me anyway. But this is clearly a glitch
arnan, @stooovie Yea I always found it clunky... but it never failed before recent macOS 😬
webology, 🤔 Bartender is the first application I lovingly pay to upgrade immediately after my annual macOS upgrade.
Supporting a solo developer who consistently updates their app (Bartender) to keep pace with the latest OS features and versions is a joy.
👎 I hope we find out the Bartender is in good hands with their new owners, but this was the wrong way to start.
#macOS #Bartender https://mastodon.social/@webology/112561271072786435
webology, An update from Ben, the creator of Bartender: https://www.macbartender.com/b5blog/A-New-Chapter-for-Bartender/
greg, @webology Not sure I trust the response but time will tell.
kaiserkiwi, Why has everything that has to do with software to be this frustrating these days?
#Bartender for #macOS was silently sold and it seems like the new owners have no intentions to say who they are.
So as usual: Is there an open source alternative to Bartender? I'm so sick of this stuff…
https://www.macrumors.com/2024/06/04/bartender-mac-app-new-owner/
kaiserkiwi, Oh wow. I just disabled Bartender and look which icon was hidden pretty conveniently by it…
This always pops up when an app records the screen. It was always visible for other apps, but disappeared sometimes for a short amount of time, what I thought was a macOS bug.
Seems like Bartender was able to hide this icon, when it was creating the screen recording itself? I'm pretty concerned right now and will definitely remove it immediately.
irfan, Bonkers how you can't 3 finger tap an item/link to open it in a new tab on #macOS like you could on #Linux (and #Windows, probably). #Apple forums I was looking into this on all starts with a simple, civilised question and quickly drags into a messy garbage of Apple extremists saying you're stupid for wanting that simple way of opening stuffs in a new tab when you can just either 1) Cmd + Click, 2) 2 finger tap + Open new tab, or 3) Get a mouse - as if those are the same things, when the answer should've been really, "you couldn't".
irfan, @adamsdesk I'm on Ventura still and holding off on updating to Sonoma since I've seen quite frequent reports on here of things I need being broken on Sonoma, but seems like a good option when I do upgrade. Thank you!
adamsdesk, @irfan oh okay. You're welcome.
ainiriand,
pixel, @ainiriand does Obsidian have an option for recording voice notes?
czottmann, @ainiriand My guess is you've enabled the Audio recorder core plugin (“Record audio notes and save them as attachments.”).
thatvirtualboy, ICYMI, I launched ,,Done’’ yesterday, a minimal #macOS menu bar app dedicated to tracking your completed tasks. Unlike traditional to-do apps, Done focuses on what you’ve already achieved, helping you keep a clear record of your accomplishments.
It’s on Product Hunt today. if you happen to hang out at such places, I’d really love your upvote! 😇
marioguzman, I just posted a sample project to GitHub which has the code I wrote for the Brushed Metal background in QuickTunes.
It seems performant but I am probably not the best in determining if it is at its most performant. Seems good though.
This is done in Core Animation layers & good for both 1x and 2x displays.
I hope to see more Brushed Metal interfaces soon 😉
RL_Dane, (edited ) Something I miss from #MacOS: Being able to command-click on a Finder window's titlebar, and seeing a pop-up menu of the entire file path.
I can't find any convenient way of doing this in #KDE #Dolphin, other than making the window huge so it can show the entire path, which doesn't work with my workflow most of the time.
Just for the curious, the directory I'm working on now is 127 characters long (full path) and 8 directories deep from /
Edit: Found a solution, thanks to @Tionisla
joel, @RL_Dane Control+L should let you access the entire file path on any file manager in Linux
18+ Tionisla, @RL_Dane click on the first ">" and it should open.

bitprophet, (edited ) Fed up with #macOS' #Spotlight. No fuzzyfinder, in 2024; no real drilldown; the way it organizes/sorts results are unintuitive. I shouldn't have to remember what /format/ a document is to go "oh right I oughtta scroll down a bunch to see PDFs” 😩
What's good for alternative launcher/finder tools these days? AFAIK, it's still down to the same candidates from ~10ya, ie #Alfred, #Quicksilver, #Launchbar? (EDIT: Raycast enters the chat! Tho its AI focus is worrying.)
See poll!
mpirnat, @bitprophet I'm still an Alfred guy, but https://www.raycast.com might be worth looking at.
mitten, @bitprophet Definitely Raycast! @robb wrote a few blog posts about switching from Alfred to Raycast; they might give you some ideas. https://rknight.me/blog/trying-raycast-part-one/ and https://rknight.me/blog/trying-raycast-part-two/ and https://rknight.me/blog/raycast-follow-up/
ottaross, I've used #MacOS for my day-to-day work for a good 35yrs. I've had a couple of brief clusters of years where I had to use a Windows at work (but still had MacOS at home).
I've installed #Linux on many old machines to extend their lives a bit, sorting through distros, finding one that would work on limited resources with good results. Fun stuff.
But I'm curious to ask a QUESTION about new computer purchases…
ottaross, Can a person buy a PC* these days with a Linux flavour on it, no Windows installed, and no MS license cost built into the price?
And not from a small shop who wiped out windows pre-sale & installed Linux after MS already got some license fee from the manufacturer.
Any big player doing that? Or just little knock-up shops stuffing pieces into an off-the-shelf case?
*excluding netbooks/chromebooks or similar reduced-function machines.
ottaross, @governa Interesting - hadn't followed the System76 and Tuxedo ventures. Nice.
drahardja, Why is it so hard to have my Mac mini consistently appear on Finder via #ZeroConf #Bonjour? Half the time the computer isn’t visible, and there’s no amount of flushcache or killing mDNSResponder or Finder that brings it back. I wait many minutes with my Finder open and…it spontaneously comes back? WTF?
stevenodb, @drahardja have you tried disabling the WiFi?
drahardja, @stevenodb On the Mac mini? Maybe I should do that. The WiFi sometimes saves me a trip down to the basement when the Thunderbolt Ethernet adapter fails 😄 which happens once in a while.
krzyzanowskim, I noticed my disk storage went drastically low and I started to check system, then I realized something ( #macos update???) enabled iCloud Photos synchronization to my Mac (that can take all the storage it get, and for that very reason I didn't enable it on my mac)
is that https://mjtsai.com/blog/2024/05/21/apple-updates-silently-enable-icloud-keychain/#comment-4092983
buck, @krzyzanowskim Does anyone still create a limited size partition for their Photos library to keep its maximum disk space usage permanently in check? I remember @marcoarment talking about this many moons ago on @atpfm
gklka, Hungarian @krzyzanowskim I think it actually disables just the UI does not reflect the state correctly.
gjherbiet, Moving away from #iTerm2 back to #macOS #terminal and would like the app to close when you quit your last shell? Add the following to ~/.zlogout :
if [ "$(ps | wc -l)" -eq 4 ] then osascript -e "do shell script \"osascript -e \\\"tell application \\\\\\\"Terminal\\\\\\\" to quit\\\" &> /dev/null &\"" exit fi
Yes, that’s a lot of backslashes but we are doing #AppleScript inside #ZSH, inside #AppleScript inside #ZSH…
jpmens, @gjherbiet auto copy to clipboard when selecting or clicking in iTerm2 is one of the main features I want to keep it for.
And, as I mentioned earlier today here, as the chat-gpt stuff is opt-in, I shrug it off. :-)
forst, @protonprivacy Hello! Have there been perchance any issue reports for #ProtonMail on #macOS #Safari?
I'm seeing that sometimes e-mails fail to load, resulting in a blank screen, or sometimes looks like the website "crashes" (blank page, empty address bar). Clearing website data didn't help. No idea yet how to reproduce, but happens regularly. Web UI 5.0.40.3.
Any suggestions which debug info I could collect before mailing support? Thanks!
protonprivacy, @forst Hi! Does the message list keep flashing like it's trying to load, but freezes at that point? Or are you observing a different behavior?
Also, can you let us know the exact steps you're performing before experiencing this issue? Are you using the sorting filter to rearrange your messages to a different order, navigating to a different page in your mailbox etc.?
Feel free to contact us at https://proton.me/support/contact with more info so we can help you troubleshoot.
neofinder, We have just released yet another free #NeoFinder Video Tutorial for you!
How does Apples #Spotlight work on a File Server or NAS?
Hint: It probably won't, so for better results, use NeoFinder...

dyani, Best free screenshot and annotation tool for mac?? I need text, shapes, drawing, arrows, etc.
It's time for an upgrade or at least a jailbreak from this shitty old paid Snaggit software I'm using.
snaptophobic, It can be a bit clumsy, but you can copy/paste and duplicate objects.
Of course, another option with a bit more finesse might be Pages.
ramsey, @dyani @sindarina I use the built-in macOS screenshot and annotation tools. They provide everything you’ve listed. Shift+Cmd+5
marcel,
marcel, @tenacity Great, thank you!
Could you include that information with the upcoming release notes (because "Download Win+Linux+Mac" links there) and the README in the git as well as the "Installation" documentation (this is where I was looking for information next, and others probably will as well)?
Thanks!
tenacity, @marcel Yep! We're planning to include that in the next release.
neofinder, #NeoFinder 8.6 offers you a much wider Media Info column in List View, so you can see the juicy media details a lot better!

pete_wright, #macos peeps - to iterm2 did a LLM thing in their terminal emulator. i just uninstalled it from my system, anyone able to recommend a lightweight replacement to the default macOS terminal.app?
penryu, @pete_wright I switched from iTerm2 to kitty a while back. Not as GUI-friendly as iTerm, but was able to unify configs across the 4 OSes.
Looked at alacritty a while back, but stability wasn't great at the time. It's in the queue to revisit soon.
littlesnitch, German Little Snitch 6 is here with powerful new features to protect your Mac’s network activity. 🔒 Upgrade now and take control!
