ai6yr,

Holy crap. Someone won the Texas Lotto -- to the tune of $95 million -- by buying every combination of number available. They apparently invested approximately $25.8M to accomplish that. (Paywall busted below) https://archive.is/etkX9

@ai6yr Recently watched a movie called “Jerry & Marge Go Large” starring Bryan Cranston and Annette Bening based on the real-life story of a humble retired Michigan math whiz that discovered a mathematical flaw in the rules that would guarantee winnings if he bought enough tickets. They legally played the game, won, and shared the opportunity with others in their small town.

ai6yr,

@scerruti 🤯

ai6yr,

Proof they bought every number is they ALSO cashed in every combination of five-out-of-six wins possible, per that article.

ai6yr,

Oh, wow, not the first time this has been done. Not surprisingly, students at MIT back in 2012 did this to the Massachusetts Lottery. https://newsfeed.time.com/2012/08/07/how-mit-students-scammed-the-massachusetts-lottery-for-8-million/

@ai6yr I really hope it's a student group instead of a single millionaire/billionaire.

ai6yr,

@meganL I'll put my money on either the same MIT group or another bunch of renegade mathematicians. 🤪

ai6yr,

Hmm, I wonder if they looked like these guys...

@ai6yr I was at MIT around that time and can assure you that no one there looked like those guys. :-)

@dan@discuss.systems avatar

@ai6yr actually, IIRC it was a group of math and CS students from the nerdiest dorm at MIT (which, er, is saying something!)

@ai6yr @scerruti First time I heard about it was 1992. This guy made a business out of it.

@ai6yr

So a fun fact about this is that I lived 2 blocks from the store where they did this and went there regularly to get beer during the time they were doing this. Was completely unaware.

Can't even win the fucking lotto anymore if you're not already rich...

ai6yr,

@cosmicallyf That seems to be the case here 😬

spmatich,

@ai6yr if other people had the same numbers do they have to split the prize? eg if two other people had the same numbers does it get split 3ways. You can’t buy every number for that outcome.

@spmatich

@ai6yr yes, which is why some attempts to do this have lost money in the past. Though at the given payout might still exist.

ai6yr,

@spmatich Yeah, I think they were gambling that no one else would be buying every combo of number (ie probably not aware of any other group doing the same math). Some luck that no one else accidentally picked that number.
