It is a gorgeous sunny day - and our tree is thriving.

We were a bit concerned with how it would do in the London clay, but with a bit of TLC, a splurge of food, and plenty of water, it is growing up quickly.

Huge thanks to https://www.hardy-eucalyptus.com/ for the plant, accessories, and advice.

stephen_cragg,

@Edent My ex bought a Eucalyptus. Looking back at Google Streetview it was under 2m tall in Jul 2008. By Jun 2012 it was as high as the house! They are quick growers.

@stephen_cragg
This one is having a bit of a slow start. But I'm hoping for similar results😁

blangry,

@Edent We got one from them too, almost died over winter but suddenly recovered a month or so back. Good bunch.

@blangry
I'm slightly addicted to sniffing ours.

Also, we planted lots of clover - which is doing well.

But also came with some Triffid / Audrey 2 seeds apparently.

Anyone know what these big leafy things are?

Letxuga007,

@Edent I'd suggest adding in the plant identification uk group on Facebook, it's the best thing I've been in for years as I'm learning loads. People are really quick, it's very impressive.

@Edent the plant net app might have some suggestions. A wildflower mix I got from the pound store seems to have included spinach (?!) which looks a bit similar but not quite the same. Perhaps small seeds have a way of finding their way into other packets

@mia @Edent Yep I'd recommend PlantNet too!

I actually just used it to take a pic of the screen, and I did wonder - it thinks it's a giant sunflower!

Do you have a bird feeder nearby which may have let some stray seeds fall into your bed?

Edent,
@Edent@mastodon.social avatar

@sarajw
@mia

Snap! Can't wait to see them flower.

No feeders, but plenty of birds.

@Edent
Exciting!

@mia
Thanks for the app recommendation, looks like they might be sunflowers 😍

catsinfrance,

@Edent burdock?

@Edent oh, I planted clover as well, nice to see how quickly it propagates, and it's flowers are very cute too! 🍀

On the other hand something periodically eats most of the leaves and I have to propagate things again. Couldn't find the culprit yet, but my eyes are on any snails that I can catch...

Edent,
@Edent@mastodon.social avatar

@imrehg
Ours have survived so far. But I don't mind the local wildlife having a munch.

Edent,
@Edent@mastodon.social avatar

All you clever clogs were correct with your plant identification.

Definitely sunflowers!

kraftner,
@kraftner@mastodon.social avatar

@Edent I know they look nice but if you want to keep the clover or anything else beneath you probably want to rip them out. They grow big fast and then take all the sun and nutrients not leaving much for others around. If this is fine though enjoy the beautiful blossoms! 🌻

Edent,
@Edent@mastodon.social avatar

@kraftner
The clover seems to be thriving and blossoming next to them - but we'll see what the season brings.

I know of no greater pleasure than watching bees getting covered in pollen as they rummage around your sunflowers.

Couple of bees flying around the glorious head of a bright yellow sunflower.
A bee. Its face absolutely covered in sticky pollen.
Just a couple of bee friends doing bee things.

Random_Seed,

@Edent like tiny Pugs with wings, and a more dangerous rear end.

GetzlerChem,

@Edent I submit, for your consideration, bees getting covered in pollen from rummaging around in your squash flowers

Edent,
@Edent@mastodon.social avatar

@GetzlerChem
Also acceptable😄

@Edent @rjfaas

The really cool thing is watching them come back to their beehives with their bags bulging with pollen.

Ummm… I think I've accidentally grown tomatoes!

Meyerweb,
@Meyerweb@mastodon.social avatar

@Edent “Accidental Tomatoes” is the name of my next atonal-jazz B-52’s cover band.

billgoats,
@billgoats@bitbang.social avatar

@Edent the exact same thing happened to me a couple of years back!

@Edent My mother in law once pulled a tomato plant out of our compost bin (evidently having sprouted from some discarded rotten tomatoes) and planted it out. They were the best tomatoes I’d eaten in a long time.

MikeHar94962844,

@Edent How does one 'accidentally' grow tomatoes?

andypiper,

@Edent looks lovely. How are the koalas, btw?

Edent,

@andypiper
Absolutely riddled with chlamydia.

differentieel,

@Edent looking good 👌🏽
