One thing they don’t tell you is that when you’re in your mid-60s reading a novel about characters in their late 40s, you still imagine them as older than you.
@RobSF I once described this guy I saw as "an older gentleman". I was asked how old, and I replied, "he seemed to be in his late forties or early fifties."
It slowly dawned on me. That's me. I just described me.
