@michaelvcooper1 @Jyoti many of these countries were stripped of resources for hundreds of years. How quickly do you think they can 'stabilise' when there's been no reparations so they're trying to build from the stripped lower base.

Where there has been progressive governments, often colonising countries interfere and obstruct. Colonising countries don't want them to be developed (on whatever terms) or equal, they want to keep asset stripping without responsibility or recognition.

ICQ vs Teams. So very true. I'm probably going to have to get a new work computer with days of reconfig cos so much is not saved properly in our profiles cos Teams just Cannot Cope and is eating 97% of the RAM constantly even when not in a video call.

Image now ALT texted. I thought it was described but re-seeing my boost in timeline the image wasn't described, so can only assume I was having a stupid last night and you get this post instead.

Its been clear for ages that many public service cuts are false economies.... as a friend of mine pointed out some time ago, if you cut early intervention & prevention services (which can be relatively cheap & effective), you then enlarge the demand for more expensive (and often mandatory) crisis services....

A new IFS study that looked at closing police stations, suggests, likewise that every £1 saved by closing a location increased social costs by £3!

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/article/2024/may/04/spending-cuts-are-often-false-economies-that-end-up-costing-society-dearly

NatalyaD,

@ChrisMayLA6 A friend of mine who has regular stays in mental health institutions has found a MH gardening group once a week was lifechanging cos it gave a safe focus away from home. This has now been cut due to lack of funding. There is nothing for "care in the community" if you are severely unwell a lot of the time.

Similarly we send people out of prisons to live in shitty crime-riddled places with no house, job, money and wonder why people reoffend. It's absolute madness.

I worked with a blind mathematician at uni level.

We used LaTeX for our student which they accessed via Jaws or braille but had to strip macros out. Student could dictate LaTeX maths at speed. We also dug out an old Perkins brailler as more useful than duxbury or other software at times.

I retain an ongoing interest in access to maths for blind and partially sighted people.

@Garwboy Thanks for this thread, I've been uncomfortable about the suggestions about locking children out of parts of the Internet etc. Especially as a teen who did use the Internet to find LGBTQ+ stuff in the middish 90s.

A lot of people trying to use Brianna's case for agendas, not all legit.

Using an extreme case to lock down all young people. I work with uni students, some who are very immature on arrival about travelling or doing stuff cos they've been stifled, especially since Covid.

@quixoticgeek

English Uni 3, Dec 2020. 10am, go to IT, get laptop, log in, twiddle Windows/MS Office, all working.

English uni 2, May 2018, borrowing various laptops for a while (we were part uni part not uni), sometimes needed a full-time colleague to log in to make it speak to my login but generally worked straight off.

English uni 1, Aug 2008, immediate access on any Pc in the uni. I got a RAM upgrade in week 3 for 5 people by asking IT nicely for me and IT realised we all needed it.

What’s your best piece of relationship advice?

NatalyaD,
@NatalyaD@disabled.social avatar

@amberage @girlonthenet partner and I call this regular sharing of the grudges database so it doesn't build-up, cos most of us do remember grudges whether you like it or not, but having it out sooner means they become less impossible

NatalyaD,
@NatalyaD@disabled.social avatar

@girlonthenet @NotTheLBCGuy Very much second this. A lot of chores feel neverending, having someone say "I notice you did X, thanks" means the time you didn't notice a job, partner is less likely to be upset.

Also adding to this, is the thing of saying "I did Y chore today" to the other, so the other can thank you - it is OK to expect to be thanked for doing a good household thing.

So this royal lassie is getting chemo, couple of thoughts:

Normally I'd advocate for absolute respect for someone's privacy, but these aristocratic folk receive public spending that could otherwise be spent on the health services so they can get fucked

I wish they were being more specific than "cancer" because one of the things it's important for people to understand is that that's meaningless at this point

As a cancer patient in their 40s, fuck the royals 👍🏻

NatalyaD,
@NatalyaD@disabled.social avatar

@sue Not to mention various journo friends say that palace PR is top notch, so the furore was either allowed to happen, or deliberately triggered and stirred up "all publicity is good publicity" kinda thing. That reduces my sympathy for 'her privacy' when it's all part of a PR/press game.

Apparently Zoom's terms and conditions (section 10.2) have changed to say they may use content of your videos for various blah including training AIs which could include stuff like deep-fake videos.

This thread is where I got my info + citation

I can't believe Google and Microsoft aren't also using video call material for training AI nonsense :(

I use Tusky app on Android to read Mastodon when not at my desktop PC. I have images turned off by default cos my smartphone is creakingly slow and sometimes I want to conserve bandwidth.

Image descriptions let me know what the images are.

https://disabled.social/@roxy@tech.lgbt/110795342843493711

Also, sometimes I can't make sense of what I see (I have good acuity but balance-related visual processing issues with blurred unstable vision) and the ID gives my brain context which instantly makes the images make more sense.

I'm really wary of automated plagiarism and invigilation/proctoring systems for assessments in education.

Here are some reasons why https://disabled.social/@183231bcb@transfem.social/111830123053792075

The companies selling this stuff are making big money convincing senior education institution management to buy it "We'll solve your big problems bingo!". Where I work, a v senior person claimed we should "just ban AI" cos clueless. Institutions rarely look for the downsides, cos someone promised an easy fix, box ticked.

ND people are not exempt from being annoying, assholes, bigoted, ignorant of their privilege or benefitting from things like white supremacy.

https://disabled.social/@Sharksonaplane@mastodon.sandwich.net/111836246357760061

I put up with a lot of crap and spoon-vampiring from at least 2 former friends who were ND who acted like they had 1st dibs on disability-needs. Claiming they couldn't help it cos ND.

I then spent time with many better NDers who try hard not to fuckup and ask for clear-challenge if they behaved selfishly, hurt/annoy people.

I spent much of today waiting for the outcome of the West Midlands Mayoral election. It was really close and I honestly thought Street (the Tory who's been trying to pretend he's not Tory really) was going to get in. Labour Richard Parker won by 1508 votes. The winner/loser results speeches were unfamiliarly Grownup Politics!

Today I also learned Andy Street is life partners with Michael Fabricant, the 'Tesco Value Boris Johnson' guy with a crap wig - MP for Lichfield. I Just Cannot Even... 🤯

@JugglingWithEggs Notice the DWP spokesperson yaps about jobcoaches having discretion and and and. So covertly blaming individual staff rather than having a clear policy that "person who is in hospital is not fit to attend" whether that's psych or any other hospital.

I find threatening to take an Equality Act claim against named adviser and DWP as jointly and severally liable scares them out of shittery but not everyone has my legal knowledge and rage - and shouldn't have to!

We had such a fun recharge break in our deep work session this morning. I learned that if you have a Mac, doing certain things with your hands on camera produces reactions in Zoom. So if you make a 🫶🏻, lots of ❤️ fly around. If you give a thumbs down 👎🏻 the screen darkens and it rains! Then we played with video filters, I turned myself into a plant creature with leaves coming out of my head and pink rosy cheeks. So silly, and a great way to break the work sessions up.

NatalyaD,
@NatalyaD@disabled.social avatar

@purplepadma Also sadly undocumented and annoying if you are using sign language on Zoom for a call and it reacts to handshapes. I wouldn't mind it if it was documented, flagged up and could be turned off easily. (and off by default)

@revk To be fair to you, the collection system looks really confusing. Think how confusing or impossible it probably is for people with poorer English or comprehension skills. The council should make it unavoidably easy to understand.
