Why does your credit score drop when you pay off a car loan?

A friend of mine was furious the other day, when he saw that paying off his car loan caused his score to drop about 40 points.

Why does this happen?

Two reasons.

👇

adnan,
@adnan@1210.nl avatar

@mikewas yes! That explains why people who pay off their loans before time and deny lenders their interest income have a lower credit score.

It looks like along with the departure of Ilya Sutskever and Jan Leike, OpenAI has disbanded its superalignment team whose mission was to “control AI systems much smarter than us.”

OpenAI’s flirtation with AI doomerism is officially over and they’re now just another startup.

@carnage4life I wish Sam had gone to Microsoft so that all of this would have been clear to the world. This is a Microsoft subsidiary and it should be treated as such by press and regulators.

I could fly to Dublin in less than two hours (net). I could do the trip with fast trains and boats in a day.

Or I can stick to slow trains and take three days.

Either way, the journey starts here. And now.

Last week, the Netherlands had, on average 4 hours per day with a negative day-ahead power price.

Until now, the Netherlands had 155 of such hours this year, compared to 65 last year in the same period, and 31 in 2022. A significant increase. We see this in most European countries.

The expansion of solar and wind occurs much quicker than the increase of power demand. Consequently, negative and near-zero power prices, with significant curtailment of solar and wind, will become more common.

adnan,
@adnan@1210.nl avatar

@BM_Visser Haven’t really seen negative electricity prices. I don’t really want to buy solar panels.

The story of DeviantArt, a community site now overwhelmed by content from AI bots and which is itself selling user content to train AI, reads like a cautionary tale for Reddit.

The saving grace is there’s no Reddit alternative for users upset about their content being sold to AI companies

I got an air quality sensor and air purifier, and have learned:

• opening the windows is the most effective way to decrease particulate matter

• our humidifier pumps out hazardous levels of particles when using tap water (oops)

• waking up w/an irritated throat and sinuses goes away with clean air!

• high particulate matter is correlated with nosebleeds in kids—and our kid gets chronic nosebleeds

I am happy to have learned all of this but also feel like an idiot for learning it so late. 😭

Trump has said FOUR times that he will withhold federal funding from schools that require vaccines. Not just COVID. ALL.

This is most schools. This is hitting me where I work. This will lead to children dead from measles. It's obvious, inevitable.

Someone on here said they just couldn't bear to vote for Biden to keep Trump from office since at least under Trump there were better masking rules.

I hope that person sees this.

Worse is worse.

When OpenAI created its “Superalignment” team in summer 2023, the goal was for it to “steer and control future AI systems that could be so powerful they could lead to human extinction,” reports @engadget. “Less than a year later, that team is dead.”

Jan Leike, one of the team’s leaders, who quit earlier this week, posted a scathing statement on X showing the internal tensions between the safety team and the wider company.

“OpenAI is shouldering an enormous responsibility on behalf of all of humanity,” he wrote. “But over the past years, safety culture and processes have taken a backseat to shiny products.” Engadget has more.

https://phanpy.social is a pretty incredible Mastodon client. Entirely web based, looks great on mobile and desktop, you can configure your shortcuts that appear above or below the river of news.

Some screenshots from my own account: good notifications page, different kinds of toots get a different status, plus Boosts are shown in their own carousel.

I've heard one developer made all this, it's pretty incredible.

Boosts are rolled up into a carousel of toots you can view with sideways scrolling
Threads are shown grouped together and single posts from threads are indicated as such.

adnan,

@dan613 @mathowie I like the boosts carousel. I wish I didn't have to scroll horizontally to read all the 10 posts in the carousel.

My credit score dropped when I paid off my car.

My credit score dropped when I paid off my student loans.

The system punishes you for not owing any money.

They told me: "You should get more loans to increase your credit score."

The system is predatory and wants you to be in debt.

Credit scores are one of the biggest scams.

adnan,
@adnan@1210.nl avatar

@FluentInFinance What is this “credit score” supposed to represent? Is it for the banks to know whether you are a desirable customer? Someone who pays backs their loans early is probably not a profitable person for them.

Four hours later...
