In this case, the someone else is Alphabet megacorp. I wouldn’t waste any concern on them. The content is still hosted by YouTube, just played through the invidious instance.

To do away with all those concerns, you could self-host invidious, or donate to the instance you choose to use if self-hosting is outside of your technical prowess. If you want to support certain creators, donate to them directly instead.

A Colorado town's newspapers were stolen after a story about rape charges at the police chief's house (apnews.com)

Nearly all the copies of a small-town Colorado newspaper were stolen from newspaper racks on the same day the Ouray County Plaindealer published a story about charges being filed over rapes alleged to have occurred at an underage drinking party at the police chief’s house while the chief was asleep, the owner and publisher...

The moment I read ‘Mike Wiggins’ I was really hoping that was the police chief.

I think it was Freakonomics that did a series on it? But yeah, quite an interesting and convoluted series of events.

Canadians worry US democracy cannot survive Trump's return to White House, poll finds (www.reuters.com)

About two-thirds of Canadians surveyed this month said American democracy cannot survive another four years of Donald Trump in the White House, and about half said the United States is on the way to becoming an authoritarian state, a poll released on Monday said....

How so? We’re doing just fine in Saskatchewan.

Ha! And technically, SK is always on DST. Solar noon is around 1pm rather than noon, so I get the gripes from those on DST.

Many don’t want to lose that sunlight outside working hours, so I think just keeping everyone on DST would be the best solution. Have timezones set so solar noon is closer to 1pm clock time.

OminousOrange,
@OminousOrange@lemmy.ca avatar

True. Up here there’s not much sun in winter anyway, so shifting back wouldn’t really be of much benefit. Sunrise is 9:02 today. Sure, it could be 8:02, but sunset would then be at 16:14.

I use Twingate to access my home network externally. NetworkChuck has a good video on how it works and how to set up.

I like Boost too. And it’s only a one-time payment for ad-free too, unlike Sync.

Ah, thanks for clarifying.

Are there any privacy friendly YouTube frontends (web or desktop) that has any sort of personal recommendation system?

I know some people praise the lack of an algorithm because it makes them spend less time on YouTube but I don’t have that problem anyway. Almost all videos I’ve watched on YouTube. I found through the homepage. The lack of it makes the alternatives useless for me. I’d even maybe be fine with something that takes all the...

Invidious and Newpipe do have watch next recommendations that aren’t only subscribed channels, so there’s a bit of discovery there, but no recommended type page where it aggregates those listings. As others have said, that would require tracking algorithms.

Pretty clear how crown corporations provide much better value to the people with SGI (SK) and MPI (MB) at the very bottom of the list.

I think it’s a great system too. It’s pretty simple and offers pretty decent discounts for safe driving. One other good feature is that the fees for demerit points are charged immediately, so it’s another reminder of ‘I should not do that’ soon after the event happens rather than delaying until the next renewal.

Mental health problems not reduced after obesity surgery in young people (medicalxpress.com)

Young people who have had surgery for obesity do not improve their mental health despite significant and permanent weight loss. However, bariatric surgery increases the risk of early alcohol problems. This is according to the largest long-term study of young people who have undergone bariatric surgery, conducted at Lund...

Like an addiction, sure you can remove the cause, or result of the issue in this case, but unless you treat the underlying issues and conditions that lead to that point, there’s a high likelihood of relapse.

I’d say Gaind’s statement isn’t quite accurate. Because healthcare is the provinces’ jurisdiction, it’s really up to them to provide reasonable healthcare access to their residents. It’s not society that is not willing to provide those populations with access to care, it’s the provincial governments.

I would agree though, MAID is not a replacement for inadequate mental health or addictions resources.

That’s really the biggest issue that’s unfortunately not at the forefront. Sure, EVs are much more energy efficient and therefore less polluting in the form of fossil fuel burn, but the way we travel is incredibly inefficient given the available technologies. Our country was literally built on the railroad, yet there is very little reasonable passenger rail alternatives in much of the country.

I’ll use my two, similar sized cars as an example (Subaru Outback and Hyundai Ioniq 5). Typical driving gets me around 8 L/100km in the Outback and 20 kWh/100km in the Ioniq. This NRCan site gives a conversion factor of 8.9 kWh/L of gasoline.

So, the Ioniq, at 20 kWh/100km is then about 72% more efficient than the Subaru at its equivalent 71.2 kWh/100km.

Even when considering lifetime emissions, EVs still have roughly 50% less emissions than ICE vehicles.

However, going back to my original point, person vehicles are still incredibly inefficient overall, given the potential alternatives.

Availability is some of the issue as well. I was able to snag an Ioniq 5 in May because another guy’s credit was rejected and I had called at the right time to add myself to the list for the new trim level.

I’ve been on the list at every dealer in SK for over a year and I’ve been called only twice, with both vehicles being the matte black. I don’t know why they even send matte painted cars here, they’re dirty the moment they’re exposed to air.

Meanwhile, there are many Ioniq 5s collecting dust in dealer lots in the US.
