The bad thing is the belief that every political view is viable and deserves a candidate.

A system that lets you vote for a fringe party candidate who nonetheless loses is only giving you an illusion.

The party leadership has nothing to do with who wins the primaries. If it did, AOC would not be in Congress today.

The voters decide. And that's what democracy is all about: letting the voters decide.

Whether these various viewpoints are officially parties or just factions in a party is a distinction that makes no difference to democracy.

I'm addressing it. Anyone can vote for AOC or a similar candidate in any area where one of them runs. This doesn't mean they'll win, and that's a good thing.

What you want is the ability to safely cast a protest vote. I don't care at all about that.

In a few places in America, socialist-populist scum like AOC can win. In most, even most blue districts, she can't, and that's a good thing.

Her national-level equivalent is Sanders, who likewise could not win even the majority of the Democratic vote, much less the overall. He was a protest vote.

He's arguing for a voting system that doesn't lead to two major parties. I'm arguing that it doesn't matter because it gets the job done.

If you wanted to argue in favor of defensive democracy, you'd have to find someone else to do it with.

Instead, you're arguing that FPtP does not allow representation, and that's simply an error.

The context you're missing is that the American fringe is always whining about the de facto two party system that excludes them, when this is actually a virtue. They're supposed to lose.

AOC is a socialist populist who is disloyal to America and rejects democracy. I stand by my opinion of her.

Populism cannot be meaningfully evaluated in terms of its stated views because it necessarily lies about them.

Populism requires pandering and other demagoguery. This leads to using the motte and bailey tactic.

Populism isn't a political stance, although it's typically associated with extremist political stances.

Populism is the conceit that they--and only they--represent the true will of the people against the corrupt elite establishment.
