NASA engineer working on Fuel Cells for human lunar exploration & alternative energy on Earth. New Orleans transplant in Houston.

I’ve managed to attract the ire of many of the chief twit’s fanboys over the past decade plus; this place seems blissfully free of them 😊

Sometimes it’s rocket science, but mostly it’s communication.

Considering Apollo 8, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, and 17 achieved escape velocity & lunar orbit - with humans on board who survived the trip, no, but radiation shielding is something we actively work on while balancing things like mass.

In planning for our missions today, EMI testing is something that I’m currently helping to coordinate as part of environmental/qualification testing for some components. Here’s a good article:

I will be at NASA’s White Sands Test Facility (WSTF) next week for meetings and training classes with some of the Japanese Space Agency (JAXA) folks working on their “Lunar Cruiser” (lunar rover).

I’ve braved plenty of Houston summers…show me what you got, New Mexico! 😁🥵

I’m not working this program so I can’t speak to this particular thing, but I have worked several launches on console in Mission Control.

A scrub this late, at least for me with Space Shuttle, was so hard mentally! You get into a mindset when, over many hours (our ascent shifts ended ~ 1 hr after Post Insertion, so we arrived on console ~ 7 hrs before launch), you psych yourself up for liftoff. It’s very deflating to be so close & not go!

@schnedan @thejapantimes There is redundancy but some failures happen prelaunch where you either don’t have time to troubleshoot, don’t understand the failure (STS-114 ECO sensors), or both.

There are Launch Commit Criteria (LCC) that have an effectivity- if x happens at T-4 hours, you do y. If x happens at T-1 hour, you do z, etc.

In this case it sounds like there was no time, and you don’t want to mess with bad software on ascent. That could create much bigger problems.

Correct on the first sentence at least. I’m not going to speculate on a return date because that would be irresponsible given my job. And I honestly have no idea. And aliens.

I’m kidding.

Or am I. 👽

My office at work currently has 4 women and 1 man.

I have been the “only” woman in an office full of men so many times - this is the first time it’s been reversed! And I’m having so much fun! (Sorry, Thomas, for all of the silliness!)

@sysop408 Great question! Yes & no it- it was gradually introduced. 1st, it was me & 2 other men…1 of the women was out for maternity leave. She came back, so 50/50. Then one of the men took another job, but he wasn’t replaced immediately. Then he was, w another woman, then we got an intern who’s a woman just this week.

When I notice it I think about how unusual it is, but we get along & are friendly, & I realize that’s not always the norm. It’s different on 2 levels but welcome!

Just saw this ad for a magnetic tag that can be bound to your bags to allow you to leave handbags and backpacks hanging on any metal surface.

Anyone with upon seeing this. 😳

I’m often seen carrying a messenger bag that never leaves my body. Even when I do put it down in public, I usually loop a strap around my leg.

There’s a reason for that.

A purse magnetically attached to the side of a car by way of a tag with a magnet inside it.
A magnetic tag on a purse holds the purse up against a magnetic door frame. Text overlay reads “in restrooms.”
A magnetic tag shaped like a leaf holds a backpack up against a bathroom stall door. Text reads “In restrooms”
