Hey Amsterdam folks! I'm playing a free gypsy-jazz gig as part of the Red Light Jazz festival, tomorrow afternoon:

#Web friends.

I'm trying to convince a company to use #PWA for their very simple app. The problem is that they want to see an example of a PWA that prompts an install.

I've found a ton of good PWAs (yummly, pinterest, uber) but they either prompt to install their app😱 or just sit there an make me pull down the menu to 'install app'.

Are there any examples that actually PROMPT the user to install? I realize this needs to be done gently. I'm just looking for any example to convince them.

@adrian@holovaty.com avatar

@scottjenson If you go to the Soundslice login page from a narrow-screen device, you'll see a prompt to install our PWA. Here's the link where you can experience this: https://www.soundslice.com/login/

adrian,
@adrian@holovaty.com avatar

@scottjenson It should indeed work on Android — there's a "native" install prompt. I believe it doesn't work on iOS due to Apple's lack of support for that particular API?

I wanna hear about the best concerts you’ve been to! Some of mine:

  • Ozomatli at The Catalyst - played until curfew, spilled out onto the street and jammed for another hour until the cops came
  • Flaming Lips at Liberty Hall - second set, played the entirety of Dark Side
  • Dar Williams at Liberty - power went out, she sat on the edge of the stage and played three songs by flashlight
  • Joni Mitchell, Brandi Carlisle, et al at the Gorge - simply magical

@jacob Local band The Hardaways, performing the entire Abbey Road album at the Replay Lounge in Lawrence, KS, circa 2003. Tiny venue, maybe 100 people packed in like sardines, all singing every word together. Cops came to break it up just as they finished “Her Majesty”

It’s Good Friday. Jesus walks into a hotel. He goes up to the front desk, slaps three nails down on the counter and says, "Can you put me up for the night?”

    @jrconlin This definitely happens in the video game world! At GamesCom there’s a retro section with tons of people who bring in old computers and consoles for viewing and playing pleasure.

    Hooray, Apple backed down! They're not neutering Home Screen web apps after all: https://9to5mac.com/2024/03/01/apple-home-screen-web-apps-ios-17-eu/

    Benedict has written previously on regulators doing software design. Good follow up today:

    adrian,
    @adrian@holovaty.com avatar

    @Migueldeicaza Surely a more reasonable move would have been for Apple to say “Hey EU, we’d like to keep home screen apps rather than neutering them. Would it be OK if we carved out an exception to always use Safari for them, at least for the time being? This seems to be in the spirit of the law if not the letter of the law.”

    adrian,
    @adrian@holovaty.com avatar

    @Migueldeicaza I think you must be misunderstanding my comment? Of course it exists, because that's the current/old/legacy behavior. Apple could have asked permission to keep the status quo, for the narrowly tailored case of installed web apps.

    Here's a fun obscure question... I'm thinking of making a map of locations of orchestrions

    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orchestrion

    Have you seen one recently? Where was it?

    Musée Mécanique in San Francisco has one: http://www.museemechanique.org/5.html

    adrian,
    @adrian@holovaty.com avatar

    @simon A museum in Haarlem, the Netherlands, is dedicated to them. Only open on Sundays. I went once and it’s quite a scene — basically a bunch of townies sit and drink beer while listening to the machines. http://draaiorgelmuseum.org/

    The Museum of Mechanical Musical Instruments in Utrecht is much larger and classier: https://www.museumspeelklok.nl/

    Hearing the bombast and unapologetic cheerfulness of these will never cease to make me break into a huge smile 😊

    This week I'm going to give a presentation at my kid’s high school about my job. The idea is to inspire them so that they might choose a career similar to what I do. Let’s say my job is "making things with web technology."
    Now my question to you is: why are you (still) excited about making stuff with web technology? (RT is appreciated)

    adrian,
    @adrian@holovaty.com avatar

    @vasilis Because you can build something that people worldwide can immediately see and interact with — with no need to get permission from anybody.

    folks, do you have any recent data on effectiveness of CSS/JS minification? (vs just gzip/brotli)

    adrian,
    @adrian@holovaty.com avatar

    @kornel Anecdotal, but I continue to use Google Closure Compiler for all of the Soundslice front-end JavaScript. Its "advanced optimizations" do an incredible job of code rewriting — things that simple minification wouldn't be able to do.
