Every once in a while I read something and think, "I wish I'd written that." This is one of those times.

The trouble is that the world has adapted to and constructed cities designed for 20th century temperatures and rainfall, but climate change brings more heat and downpours, said Andrew Dessler, a Texas A&M University climate scientist.

“We’re departing the climate of the 20th century right now and we just can’t handle these events,” Dessler said. “So they’re getting slightly more extreme, but they’re passing our ability to handle them.”

Your occasional reminder that one of the longest standing predictions of climate science, which has subsequently been verified by observations, is that rainfall events will become more intense.

If you’re wondering how climate scientists connect climate change to individual extreme weather events, or whether climate change contributed to the flooding in Dubai, read this!

Hey reporters: please do not connect the flooding in Dubai with cloud seeding. If you seed clouds all the time (which they do), then when intense rain occurs (which eventually it will) you may conclude that cloud seeding was responsible. But what about the 999 times when you seeded and it didn’t flood.

andrewdessler,
@andrewdessler@mastodon.world avatar

Cloud seeding is one of the most dubious practices in meteorology and it’s often a scam that takes advantage of desperate people. Until peer-reviewed research shows a connection for this event (which may happen but I doubt it), the null hypothesis is that the impact of cloud seeding on the event was zero.

holy cow, this is dark.

a lot of what she says is correct — academics can be a soul sucking career. but it does work and academic research is responsible for a lot of great things in the world.

let's see how ERCOT dealt with the eclipse

first, total power mix. you can see solar decline, and it's picked up by natural gas

andrewdessler,
@andrewdessler@mastodon.world avatar

here's the price of power. during the eclipse, the real-time price spiked

andrewdessler,
@andrewdessler@mastodon.world avatar

batteries were also cranking out power

here's another view of solar energy in ERCOT today

Tweeps who teach python: are there any tricks/suggestions for teaching algorithmic thinking… eg how to take a problem and break it into its constituent parts?
