"Overall across the #EU, two mainstream and pro-European groups, the Christian Democrats and the Socialists, remained the dominant forces. The gains of the far right came at the expense of the Greens.

For decades, the European Union confined the hard right to the political fringes. With its strong showing in these elections, the far right could now become a major player in policies ranging from migration to security and climate."

Russia Says Its Forests Can Absorb Its Greenhouse Gas Emissions. Climate Change and Poor Forestry Standards Make This Unlikely.

""Tornado Alley" is a shorthand term that has typically described the central Plains region of the United States, but parts of the eastern U.S. now face the "greatest tornado threat."

‘Slap in the face’: outrage after New York governor halts

"An 11th-hour decision to halt a plan to charge a fee for cars entering the heart of has provoked outrage from environmental advocates and Democratic lawmakers, potentially scuppering hopes of congestion pricing taking hold in any US city in the near future."

Build nuclear (he admits it takes a long time).

Biden pulls back on tightened car and truck fuel standards
"Under the rule, formally known as the Corporate Average standards, all light-duty vehicles overall must meet an average of 50.4 mpg in 2031, down from 55.7 mpg in last year’s proposal. The current average is 39.1 mpg.

For SUVs and pickups, the requirement will be 45 mpg. That’s up from the 35.2 mpg they average now, but it’s less than the 52.2 mpg that the agency had proposed last year."

https://www.politico.com/news/2024/06/07/biden-pulls-back-on-tightened-car-and-truck-fuel-standards-00162297

CelloMomOnCars,
@CelloMomOnCars@mastodon.social avatar

"NHTSA’s final [] rule maintains the proposal’s requirement that passenger cars make 2 percent annual improvements for model years 2027 through 2031."

For light trucks including SUVs, the original rule called for 4% improvement every year.
Now that's no improvement required until 2028 and 2% a year after that.

For heavy pickup trucks: 10% a year improvement, now 10% a year through 2032, then 8% through 2035.

The SUV loophole is as big as an SUV.

"All told, the rule will save almost 70 billion gallons of gasoline and prevent some 710 million metric tons of carbon dioxide from being emitted through 2050, according to NHTSA’s analysis. That’s down from over 90 billion gallons and 907 million tons of CO2 in the earlier proposal."

Even as it is, the rule will save Americans a lot of gas money.

Ted Cruz (R-TX) doesn't want you have those savings. He will try to nullify the rule.

76% in 2031
82% in 2032

Vote green, vote progressive.

We can do much better than that.
We need an even more ambitious Green Deal. Getting that needs your vote.

Could it happen here?

"In general, restrictions must demonstrate that something about the campaign is false, misleading or illegal.

In theory, lawmakers could tackle by requiring them to include warnings about the dangers they pose to the planet.

At the end of 2020, Cambridge, MA, became the first U.S. city to require labels on gas pumps warning of the risks that gasoline, ethanol and diesel pose to human health and the environment."

There are lessons from the history of bans on advertising.

  1. Ban from one venue, they go to another, less regulated one.
  2. Comprehensive bans reduces smoking.
  3. There are loopholes, e.g. "Influencers" are not counted as advertising, e-cigs are not included, etc.
  4. There are effective ways other than an outright ban.

As we all know, countries do manage to reduce smoking:
