Did you love NOVA on PBS when you were kid?
Now's a great time to tune in again—EFF joins the program to discuss "Secrets in Your Data" https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2024/06/eff-covers-secrets-your-data-novl

Yes, I loved it as a kid. But in the past 20 years, as attention spans have shrunken to flea-size, I can't stand NOVA and refuse to watch it. The editing is rat-a-tat machine-gun style, as in "ooh! look at this! NO! look at this! NO THIS! ahhh hey this! and what about THIS! and check THIS out! did I mention THIS! and THAT! look at THIS! here's something! and more! more! more!" I mean it's effing nuts, as if the show is scared to death someone might aaaaaaagh flip the channel aaaargh 😱😱😱😱

“That's why podcasting, unlike the music industry, never went to war with its users.“

brianstorms,
@brianstorms@mastodon.social avatar

@dave

Lots of good insight here. It’s so true about music industry going to war with its users. Same with movie industry. I tried to help the cinema industry with MovieGoer and they were so terrified of an app that might, while empowering users, act as a rising tide lifting all ships/cinemas, they, like movie studios, got completely paranoid. They were fine as long as they had exclusive rights to the tech for their users only… but to SHARE?! 😱😱😱😱

Some industries are their own worst enemy.

Not fraud committed to deceive the American voters in an election. No “election fraud” narrative to be found anywhere across mainstream US media.

    The American media is gonna end up either killing or subjugating all of us due to the laziness and incompetence of most reporters, and perverse agendas of editors and news execs.

    I blame editors first, second, and third. They’re largely unseen and unaccountable. Yet fully responsible for all the narratives they want fed to the public.

    brianstorms,
    @brianstorms@mastodon.social avatar

    @hrbrmstr Yes, totally right. I’ve seen it too. I just blame editors first for setting the narratives which are often misleading. Bad/misleading narratives can benefit from badly-reported facts so maybe that’s why they let reporters get away with it. Even scarier, maybe the editors are simply dummer than reporters.

    i absolutely love how my ipad can be so slow to wake up on pressing the power button that it thinks i’m holding it down and activates siri. no privacy violations detected there

    brianstorms,
    @brianstorms@mastodon.social avatar

    @exchgr

    Reason 6732145 why I have Siri so shut down, gagged, blindfolded, and ears muffled, the only way to disable it further would involve a) hacking the OS and b) phyically opening my Apple devices and surgically removing the microphones and speakers, or, alternatively, if it comes down to it, driving to the tallest building within 500 miles, going to the roof, and flinging all my Apple devices over the edge.

    It’s left to the reader to decide whether my Siri antipathy is excessive or not.

    brianstorms,
    @brianstorms@mastodon.social avatar

    @exchgr

    They make it difficult and time-consuming. Then with app and OS updates they find ways to enable some Siri crap and you have to go turn off once again things that mysteriously got turned back on.

    That alone is reason aplenty why not to trust a company when it’s so eager to snoop.
