How bad are the thousands of new stochastically-generated websites?
Last night I wanted to roast some hazelnuts, and I could not remember the temperature I used last time. So I searched on DuckDuckGo. Every website that I could find was machine-generated with different temps listed. One site had three separate methods listed that were essentially differently worded versions of the same thing. With different temperatures.

So I pulled my copy of Rodale’s Basic Natural Foods Cookbook off the shelf and looked it up there.

I think it may be time to download an archive copy of the 2022 Wikipedia before we lose all of our reference material. It was nice having all the world’s knowledge at my fingertips for a couple of decades, but that time seems to be past.

[ Edit: Since others have mentioned the possibility, I should mention that some of these sites may have been SEO-generated/altered and not generated by an LLM. However, even if that is the case, the fact that the sites are as bad as and indistinguishable from LLM-generated sites means to me they are just as bad and just as likely to be have only a loose resemblance to reality. There are many ways to be a fancy stochastic parrot. ]

Yes, probably. If the wheels come off your flagship product and you are blaming the customer, going belly-up is certainly a possibility.

Admittedly the wheels falling off might be less of a problem if you're selling ships or obelisks, but, unfortunately they don't.

I’ve been in this business, writing software professionally, since I started my first software business at 16 in high school an an Apple ][. That’s 45 fucking years. It would never occur to me to steal other people’s code, let alone their likenesses, voices, or art.

Just eject these thieving “AI” companies into the sun. These people, and the VCs that fund them, are a cancer on the software industry.

Late? It's never too late for the .

(Only the amount of razing that needs to be done becomes larger later, but on the other side it's then much easier because there are less shades of grey and more proof who the perps are).

I'll answer to myself, since TCat doesn't know and rather wants to "move on" now, after I asked for chapter and verse of the law.

The rule in question seems to be the "Berlin Freedom of Assembly Act" (approx 2020) which, interesting enough, further constrains the right of assembly as guaranteed by the Grundgesetz. I stll have my doubts if a federal country can do that. But I'd like to point out that the GG Article 8 only guarantees the right of assembly to all Germans.

glitzersachen, (edited )

@TCatInReality @aral

So assemblies by non-Germans are just permitted on sufferance ... which gives the police a lot of leeway do everything they want with assemblies by expatriates, fugitives, immigrants. Exactly the groups where you would anyway expect 100% neutral objectivity by German police.

UK government adviser on disruptive protest accused of conflict of interest:

John Woodcock, whose review proposes bans for protest groups, has lobbying links to firms in arms and fossil fuel sectors (and is recommending bans on protests against both those industries)

Personally I think federal structure like in Germany is pretty OK (without the Bundesrat). You have local representations (Gemeinderat, Kreisrat), country wide representation (Landtag) and "nation wide" (Bundestag)

Of course who is responsible for what and who is paying what (or allocating budget) that's all a bit of a mess, but nobody said, democracy would be easy.

....

glitzersachen,

@BashStKid @simon_brooke @HighlandLawyer @cstross

Dictatorships sometimes also work (e.g. Franco survived until the 70s). When they work, this doesn't make them more democratic. And often the question one should ponder is also "for whom do they work?".

glitzersachen,

@BashStKid @HighlandLawyer @simon_brooke @cstross

We don't have senators, but also a strange "interest group" council, the "Bundesrat". It seems the fathers of democracy found it really hard to leave the actual power to the plebs. There os always this component of "betters" who need to provide checks and balances.

....

glitzersachen,

@melanie @BashStKid @simon_brooke @HighlandLawyer @cstross

Difficult. The EU only exists since 1993, the precursor org was teh EEC. It seem the parliament exists since 1952 has direct elections since 1975, but a EU constitution does not exist yet (abandonded proposal in 2004 -- justly so, in my opinion).

One word: It's a terrible mess. And I'd argue it's not really democratic, but rather an instrument for the executive of the member countries to acquire legislative powers.

glitzersachen,

@BashStKid @HighlandLawyer @simon_brooke @cstross

...

Actually I distrust people promising democracy will be easy "if only <something>". That is, given human nature, not likely, so whoever promises that is just trying to bamboozle the listeners for $PURPOSES.

glitzersachen,

@melanie @BashStKid @simon_brooke @HighlandLawyer @cstross

... But they are emphatically not a constitution. As constitution they would be graded with "Failed. Totally missed the topic".

Only bureaucrats who do not understand the philosophy of law (like the EU council) might think this mess qualifies as constitution.

glitzersachen,

@HighlandLawyer @melanie @BashStKid @simon_brooke @cstross

Yes. Actually eff them both. A democracy without a constitution is so not 21st century. The UK can be apologized for being old enough to just having carried over this state. The EU: Not.

@mwl has this kickstarter here: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/mwlucas/run-your-own-mail-server.

Started with a goal around $ 900 and is now past $ 16K. And multiple stretch goals have been reached.

I am mentioning this because a lesson is to be learned here: Provide instructions to stick it to the evil empire and even in 2024 you suddenly got a lot of friends. This gives me hope.

Maybe you also want to stick it to the evil empire? Back the book! MWL totally has earned that. 😉

  • 18 knives built in and ready all the time.

  • At the hunter/seeker sensor ensemble four additional daggers as part of the shredder ensembler located in front of the foreign matter intake.

  • Supporting: Built in anti-grav (limited, but very effective), emergency ejector (in unclear situation eject, sort things out on the way down) and turbo metabolic mode.

  • Suspected of mind control powers.
