I have just had a message from Microsoft on my Windows 10 desktop that all support is ending for Windows 10 on October 25th.
My computer isn't compatible for Windows 11, even if I wanted it.

I am only moderately tech savvy, so I'm very nervous about installing Linux Mint ( recommended by quite a few blogs etc). Where would I find tech support if it goes wrong?

There are definitely times when the Urge to do Journalism bites. For example: I'm sat drinking a coffee overlooking Whitstable harbour. There's a ship unloading, and I search for the name. This leads me to find out that it was impounded earlier this year for a bunch of safety violations, and is owned by a reasonably elaborate bunch of shell companies. Probably nothing illegal, but quite a lot of playing "pass the asset" from one company to another.

This is what journalism mostly is: persistently pulling at the thread of something you find, to the point where you know something interesting is going on. It takes time and effort, but anyone can do it – you just need to be methodical. As I always say to new journalists, if you think you're job is writing, you're in for a disappointment.

@wordshaper Companies House is absolute gold for getting started. And one of the first (and most useful) things I learned back in the day was how to read company reports to dig out the stuff they had to say, but really wanted to bury.

I haven't really been keeping up with the omnishambles that is the Tory election campaign, so I'm only just finding out that "we got you through Covid" is one of their campaign lines. Sure, you got us through it, by setting rules that you were ignoring at the time to such a degree the PM had to resign.

I would be much more supportive of compulsory national service for 50-60 year olds. The ones who got free education, affordable housing to buy, etc. It’s about time we gave something back to our country.

@baldur Point still stands. I doubt there are many people in the US who have never, ever written down their SSN or bank details in email or somewhere in a file on their system.

No privacy or security advocate has had hands on with the system. Every single one I've ready has filled in blanks in info with assumptions. Every. Single. One. And some of those assumptions are already proving to be wrong (i.e. that website filtering doesn't work except with Edge. That, we now know, is wrong).

For those who aren’t aware, Microsoft have decided to bake essentially an infostealer into base Windows OS and enable by default.

From the Microsoft FAQ: “Note that Recall does not perform content moderation. It will not hide information such as passwords or financial account numbers."

Info is stored locally - but rather than something like Redline stealing your local browser password vault, now they can just steal the last 3 months of everything you’ve typed and viewed in one database.

@gwire @GossiTheDog It sort of does, I think… not inaccessible but less accessible. From the video Kevin reposted, it shows that to access the stored data file, you need to explicitly put in your Admin password – even to get to in in Windows Explorer. That means, I believe any app which wants to reach it also has to request access.
