@impactology one does not exclude the other. I consider "Sustainable FOSS" to be where devs can earn a decent living as well, if they desire to. Yes, the code can be "libre and gratis", but also paid in some form or other.

Very often you see that these federations of cooperatives / commmunities / other organizations when they intend to form collaborations, they create this partnership network. But in practice it mostly ends up that each of them shows a "logo wall" of whom they partner with, yet this only goes skin deep and often isn't even mutually indicated.

Manifesto on the Teaching of Mathematics – Intellectual Mathematics by Viktor Blåsjö @viktorblasjo
https://intellectualmathematics.com/manifesto/

Intellectual Mathematics is written for the intellectual fulfilment of the reader.

Gosh this was the most relatable rant of math education, specifically math textbooks I've come across

He maintains a blog, has a podcast and also has written free textbook on calculus (that follows his unique pedagogy) and history of math

https://intellectualmathematics.com

impactology,
@impactology@mastodon.social avatar

"Traditional curriculum designers butcher mathematics the way colonialists used to divide conquered continents: with crude and clinical cuts that are profoundly insensitive to any and all organic connections between the constituent parts"

"Such an approach makes sense for those who take their own authority for granted. Intellectual Mathematics does not use such totalitarian techniques. Borders are not drawn where they do not belong and organic connections are respected"

In traditional mathematics, when facing a new concept, the goal is to reach the requisite results without making any technical errors. Crossing the t's and dotting the i’s are the alpha and omega of traditional mathematics. Traditional mathematics is anti-human. It fetishises robotic manipulation of symbols and involves no emotions except a crippling fear of genuine and free human thought. In traditional mathematics, the character and bulk of any given proof usually has next to nothing to do with why that particular theorem is true and every- thing to do with incidental technicalities. Students soon get the hint that mathematics is not about actually thinking and trying to figure stuff out; rather it is clearly a formal game completely divorced from common sense. Indeed, formal proofs are sometimes accompanied by an informal heuristic argument, only to be followed immediately by the admonition that “of course this is not a proof!” Much more than giving the student some shred of intu- itive insight, such passages convey more than anything that honest thinking is futile and impermissible in mathematics because a proof only counts if it is packed with technical jargon that has nothing whatsoever to do with the specific matter at hand.

"Conversely, topics that do lend themselves to endless drill problems will often be taught for this reason alone, despite being utterly pointless & contrived"

"In Intellectual Mathematics, presenting topics in an inherently interesting and meaningful way is the first and foremost consideration"

"The purpose of the problems at the end of the section is not to force students through a repetitive obstacle course, but to convince the students of the value and importance of what they are studying"

impactology,
@impactology@mastodon.social avatar

"In traditional mathematics, things are taught because they are replicable and testable. The teacher is so dependent on the drillmaster paradigm that only topics that fit it can be taught"

"If a topic doesn’t allow for fifty-eight near-identical drill problems at the end of the section, then that topic is unteachable in traditional mathematics. It will not be taught no matter how important or crucial for understanding the true purpose of the entire subject"

impactology,
@impactology@mastodon.social avatar

"This is the opposite of traditional mathematics teaching, which treats students like circus animals who need to be taught to jump through hoops by means of mindless drill training"

"The traditional approach fosters robotic, unthinking students. It selects for obedience and punishes independent and critical thought. Intellectual Mathematics does the opposite"

"Traditional mathematics is written for robots and nitpickers. It is obsessed with being technically correct at the expense of all else"

Analysis

Original definition of genocide

"Israel’s actions likely met Lemkin’s original definition long before the war on Gaza. Starting in 1947, roughly 700,000 Palestinians fled or were expelled by Israel & barred from returning."

Lemkin wrote about how his original definition of genocide had been undermined in its codification:

"They want nonenforceable laws with many loopholes in them, so that they can manage life like currency in a bank.”

What happens when toxicity in workplaces, educational institutions is the norm, or rather the cultural default and not exception

What happens if you live in a place where no matter where you apply you are bound to get bullies, scummy people

(indian job market and workplace culture feels like that)

Ever feel like so much of our lives is just spent around mitigating assholes around us?

Whoever has managed to find a workplace with kind people has hit jackpot in life

Theorem_Poem,
@Theorem_Poem@mstdn.social avatar

@impactology Yeah, because bullying is normalized. Parents and teachers bully and berate children - it's supposed to "toughen them up" for the "real world". The "real world" looks like that because if you've been controlled and abused your whole life, you'll misuse power the instant you are given one scrap of it. The cycle continues.

Israel is just becoming unhinged.

“Knesset to hold preliminary vote designating UNRWA a terror organization”

That is the UN organization “United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA)”.

I’m struggling to comprehend this. How does Israel imagine the aftermath of this conflict? Its relationships with other countries, with any country?

These are rhetorical questions, I’m not sure I want to know tbh.

The fact that millions of people apply for an exam to gain access to education and only few hundred or thousand get the access will never cease to horrify me

I don't understand how in 21st century, post-internet people can still defend the notion of gatekeeping access to education via entrance exams

The way gatekeeping for access to education has been normalized and desensitised folks in accepting it as a way of life since centuries is astonishing

As a culture we need to get over with association of prestige for "cracking exams"

Exam toughness and periodic test-taking is not a marker of creative, inventive skillset needed to build original technology.

We need to get over this obsession of marks, ranks, exam toughness, percentages as symbolic to inventiveness in a profession/domain/research.

An exam based pedagogy don't teach you to invent and discover. Just recreate.

I sometimes listen to NN Taleb who is fervently against large institutions because they squish good culture. He suggests people who make progress do so despite their employer (academia, govt, corporate).

He gives many examples of historical inventors and discoverers who were lucky enough to have the time and resources to play and tinker.

For me this ties into the idea of UBI to free people up to follow their own instincts and not spend 100% of their time surviving.
