Seat reservations for Interrail on German trains

€4,90 2nd class, for as many trains as you want - if they connect - if you reserve with DB
€5,90 1st class, for as many trains as you want - if they connect - if you reserve with DB

€3,00 1st or 2nd class with ÖBB - but you pay per train

So if you're taking 1 ICE - book seats with ÖBB. If you're taking two or more and they connect, book with DB

@jon does ÖBB do family/group reservations like DB? The ability to get seats together for a family of four without paying 4× the reservation fee was nice. (And the opposite was particularly annoying for the compulsory reservations in France. The kids' Eurail passes were free, but their reservations cost as much as ours.)

@Alon @jon and you also have to have the itinerary of the train memorized to figure out if you're getting off before the reservation starts.

@jon my favorite (sorry, favourite) version of this, I think at my landlady's house in Cambridge, was the "modern" kitchen sink with a single spout, which dispensed water that was hot on the left side of the stream and cold on the right.

@jon @tops starting a Eurail itinerary with a Madrid-Valencia journey right after an intercontinental flight was not the greatest plan on my part. (Made worse by the complication of getting from the airport to the station and finding the right ticket office once we were there.)

As I feel like I keep repeating my best Interrail tricks in emails to friends, I started a blog post writing them up

So here you go 👇
https://crossborderrail.trainsforeurope.eu/interrail-tips-and-tricks/

This is far from comprehensive, but might just help a few people! And if you have things you think I should add, feel free

And no, I don't have time to explain why each point is as it is. You better just accept it 🙂

jtwcornell91,
@jtwcornell91@hostux.social avatar

@jon Thanks! Most if not all of these also appear to be applicable to as well as

@jon Minor correction: Eurail is spelled with only one r, although Interrail is spelled with two.

When I am NOT working on railway policy, and would have time to work on ferries, I'd work to make it a legal obligation that every ferry everywhere has to carry foot passengers

Border stations in national tariff systems – a simple change with a meaningful impact

New post

Why including AT LEAST ONE (and ideally more than one) actual, physical border station in the tariff systems of both countries at a border is a simple and useful change

Including an analysis of Germany's 54 active cross border passenger lines 👇
https://crossborderrail.trainsforeurope.eu/border-stations-in-national-tariff-systems-a-simple-change-with-a-meaningful-impact/

jtwcornell91,
@jtwcornell91@hostux.social avatar

@jon tbh this goes for all tariff zone borders. If I have a monthly pass for city A and I want to go to adjacent suburb X on the S-Bahn I should be able to buy a day ticket for suburb X rather than worrying I'll get fined between stations if I don't get a day ticket that covers both City A and Suburb X.

@partim @patrislav @jon where does one ride an e-scoter then? Presumably not on the sidewalk/pavement?

@patrislav @partim @jon ah, so like Vespa style. Odd that we ended up with the same word for mini-motorcycles and things you stand on.

In Berlin all the road users - car drivers, cyclists, pedestrians who have to cross roads - are annoyed

And Transport Senator Manja Schreiner's plans are not going to help

But could there be a way to make this better all round - and start by making parking more orderly in Berlin?

Far fetched perhaps, but explained on my blog 👇

DB excelling as normal with the ICE 317 Bruxelles-Frankfurt

We're 17 mins late at Aachen (because we crawled from Liège) and there was no explanation. People will have missed their connections, as I also will shortly in Köln

All passengers are also going to have to change onto another train in Köln (as per DB Navigator) as this ICE set will not continue to Frankfurt, and that hasn’t been communicated either

Sure, things go wrong, but how about keeping passengers informed?

jtwcornell91,
@jtwcornell91@hostux.social avatar

@jon If you know to use DB Navigator, you can get very good real-time information, though. A couple of years ago we went from Frankfurt to Garmisch-Partenkirchen during a strike when half of the LD trains were cancelled, and the app let us find the alternatives (e.g., figuring out that we needed to go to the Flughafen Fernbahnhof to catch the eastbound train that was running). I don't know how it would have gone if we'd needed to rely on announcements.

This is the start of the Day 07 thread

I’ll post the video and data as soon as I can, but the mobile network is patchy here in the train near Verviers

But I’m 😡🤬 this morning. Because of Deutsche Bahn, and then the German police…

jtwcornell91,
@jtwcornell91@hostux.social avatar

@jon I'm surprised the Deutschlandticket isn't generally valid to one station over the border the way the Ländertickets are (e.g., Baden Ticket valid to Basel Bad or Bayern Ticket to Salzburg). Is the D-Ticket systematically different or is it just spotty?
