Independent Mac/iOS & web developer. Building useless random stuff in Swift, Ruby or JavaScript and wasting time. Currently also learning Rust 🦀 I'm mostly hanging out on Bluesky these days and hacking things on the AT Protocol, so follow me there 😎 🐦 @kuba_suder 🦋 @mackuba.eu

I'm thinking of checking out now that dorsey left, but I can't find a list of bluesky servers/instances. Is the federation feature too new? I just don't wanna do bluesky.social because I don't want the bs of being in a mainstream instance.

@mackuba@martianbase.net avatar

@Cheesealicious So, uh… where do I start…

is organized in a very different way than the Fediverse. It's hard to compare 1:1, it's apples to oranges.

Fedi is basically a collection of "instances" that are kind of city-states. Your instance is your UI, your identity, your community and does moderation for you.

On Bluesky, all of this is separated.

mackuba,
@mackuba@martianbase.net avatar

@Cheesealicious There isn't really something like a "Bluesky instance".

The thing they launched in February is federation of the "PDSes", the servers that keep your account and all your data. So you can have your own server where you make posts and that you log in and connect through. (right now they're limited to <= 10 accounts on each for this beta phase)

But the PDS isn't really like a Mastodon instance in that it doesn't matter that much which one you're on.

mackuba,
@mackuba@martianbase.net avatar

@Cheesealicious The official web UI is at bsky.app, and you can use it (or some other) regardless what PDS you're on. The PDS service generally doesn't have a built-in web UI on its domain like Mastodon instances do.

If you sign up on a Bluesky-owned PDS, you get a handle ***.bsky.social initially, but you can change it at any moment to any domain you own (mine is mackuba.eu). This is completely independent of what PDS you're hosted on.

mackuba,
@mackuba@martianbase.net avatar

@Cheesealicious They've also recently launched independent moderation services. So there are a couple teams that are doing their own moderation, and it works in such way that they add "labels" to accounts and posts. You can subscribe to several of these services and request that things like racism or extremism as marked by them are hidden from you.

mackuba,
@mackuba@martianbase.net avatar

@Cheesealicious There's also no such thing as "The Algorithm" on Bluesky like on Twitter/Threads. There is instead a system where anyone can built their own "feeds" that pick posts using any filter or algorithm, and there's something like 50k of them right now. You can follow and pin any of them, and now you can even replace the default "Following" feed with some feed that you like.

mackuba,
@mackuba@martianbase.net avatar

@Cheesealicious So, on the Fediverse, the instance is your community, your handle, hosts your data, does moderation for you and serves a web UI.

On , you use bsky.app (or 3rd party app) as the UI, host data on the PDS, use any domain as the handle, subscribe to some number of selected moderation services, and use search, hashtags and custom feeds to find interesting content and people.

I got back to this hacky Mastodon bridge thing that puts Mastodon inside the Bluesky app - now added profile view 😼

Norway changes the constitution to protect the judiciary after seeing concerning moves by populist politicians in countries like Poland, Hungary and checks notes USA.

@Patricia @keithwilson This is the way to go. Our main problem was that those who wrote the constitution literally did not foresee that level of audacity, so they haven't built in enough "defences". The populists abused every loophole they could find, and we kept running into situations where we go "hmm… actually it's hard to say what you're supposed to do now, that just wasn't supposed to happen?". So it's better if you can "patch" it beforehand…

I sometimes wonder how things would've looked on if the first beta had been ready just 6 months earlier, if all those people who left Twitter for Mastodon could have gone there…

I've just checked the hashtag feed for and apparently there were 19 posts in total… (and 9 of those from me) 😕

mackuba,
@mackuba@martianbase.net avatar

There is a lot of activity there, active users and posts daily, some communities are active there, but there is very little programming talk that's not ATProto-related, very few indie iOS/Mac devs, Swift and Ruby programmers etc… A lot of accounts I recognize that signed up around April too, but ended up not posting there.

mackuba,
@mackuba@martianbase.net avatar

@pshadov … you know what… I haven't actually checked, because I assumed it would be just Taylor Swift, but there's actually quite a lot of relevant posts on #swift apparently 😄

Ooooof 🥵 the new iPad Pro is hot! It is noticeably thinner and feels much nicer. But at the end of the day, I really just want the new Magic Keyboard with the Function Keys row. The OLED is alright. Just wanting the keyboard is not enough to justify my configuration of $2,000. Maybe in a couple months when discounts go online at other retailers. Pretty solid & very refined iPad.

I will say the keyboards give me that cheap, Amazon-sold wannabe Apple Magic Keyboards though. Just a vibe though.

mackuba,
@mackuba@martianbase.net avatar

@marioguzman I'm thinking about getting the previous-gen MiniLED one at a discount… 🤔

Gonna go check out the new iPad Pros at the Apple Store to get the FOMO out of my system.

But I should at least wait until Amazon or Best Buy have a nice/decent discount in a couple months. They always do it seems.

@mackuba@martianbase.net avatar

@marioguzman just did that today too https://martianbase.net/@mackuba/112452110714853522 ;)

I like how thin they are, but tbh… I'm somehow not a fan of this new metallic keyboard, it's… cold and metallic (the case). I think the old one might have been nicer (but has no function row…).

Ok, I've got a 4th instance of the same firehose client running (with only one really being used) 🫠

I'll let it run for a little bit, and then I want to do some experiments with how the performance changes if I use MySQL or Postgres instead of SQLite 🤔 (I had a bit too little space for that before)

Truly, AI is the new crypto… (in the meaning that every day I now see someone on my timelines complaining about AI, just like in 2021 everyone was complaining about crypto 😜)

Tried Threads a little bit, wanted to see if it would be easier to find some things, and also how's the movie community out there.

Either their search doesn't work at all, or the movie community is close to non-existent (at least regarding more cult movies and bluray releases)

I'm so happy that we have some cool people posting here on

mackuba,
@mackuba@martianbase.net avatar

@falcon I think Jack actually had very little influence on the project after it started (the lead dev said he's barely talked to him at all)… it's just that everyone who's not in the loop thought he was involved because that's how it was presented in the media. So nothing should really change, except one less thing to discourage people :)
