Not sure if all the YouTube essayists bloviating in endless circles about the design genius of Metroid/Quake/Windwaker/etc. have such extremely limited nostalgia-bound horizons as to exclude the hard work and talent of modern gamedev, do have expansive horizons but know their audience doesn't, or if it really has been all downhill since the first Mario Bros.

I don't have the time or the money to form an opinion for myself. :(

@Adorable_Sergal They are clearly missing out if they're not gushing over Signalis. Or Stardew Valley. Or Returnal. I love my nostalgic 2000s-era games, but there's so many great games coming out all the time.

@cory That was a lovely read. As someone with a lot of tattoos they all seem to blend together (especially on my arm) but I have a story and a memory associated with each one. One thing I love about tattoos is that the time and pain necessary to get one means you have to really want it.

Bluesky opens to the public. Come one, come all. https://archive.is/xlf4s

@ygalanter Is there a point to joining Bluesky if one is already on Mastodon?

This article by @cory accurately captures my feelings towards generative AI: https://coryd.dev/posts/2024/i-dont-want-anything-your-ai-generates/

I've had a hard time explaining my ethical disagreements with it, but Cory sums it up quite nicely:
"AI output is fundamentally derivative and exploitative (of content, labor and the environment)."

So this is what the first new Silent Hill "experience" looks like. Nothing about this looks even remotely appealing.

Just signed up to , followed 3 people and, well, my feed is full of quality posts like this one.

Think I'll give it a pass for now 🤣

@michael I have the impression that Threads is just Mastodon for influencers and brands.

There's no Mastodon slump.

Sign-ups continue to increase -- albeit, not at the same rate as in November -- November was a spike.

While Monthly Average Users (MAUs) decreased since November, it's increased again this month (according to @Gargron).

But what's more interesting is that Half Year Average Users (HYAUs) is at a peak.

And we're very close to breaking 1 billion posts per month!

See chart.

@atomicpoet @ygalanter What's the justification for creating yet another protocol? The cynical side of me thinks it's just lip service to stop people from moving to ActivityPub-based services while they build another silo.
