I played with Lego as a kid and loved it, but never actually received a set that only belonged to me. When I grew up, dolls were for girls, Lego for boys...my love of my life now surprised me and for the first time in my life I have my very first set - thank you @paul - love you so much 🥰 ❤️ Never to late for the first one!

Whilst I find the whining of #Windows and #Adobe users about privacy infringing changes mildly annoying (We've been telling you for 20+ years that tying yourself to multi-billion-dollar corporations was a bad idea, but most of you actively chose that anyway), this might be the final push for public institutions and companies to demand open standards and formats in order to award contracts.

This gives me a bit of hope.

Many people don't care to vote in European elections, because they think, it doesn't matter, but this is far from true.

European laws, be it on environmental or social standards, consumer protections, privacy and more affect every person in the (and to a degree: beyond) and the parliament, our directly elected representatives, plays a central role in the institutional process.

Please go and vote! Fascists and "fascists with some manners" (conservatives) will!

Every solid object, such as the rods in the image below, has an inertia tensor. We can write the inertia tensor for the black rod, which keeps changing its orientation, as a sum of various multiples of the inertia tensors for the 6 fixed rods. The plot at the bottom shows how these 6 components change as the black rod points in different directions.

But why do we need 6 components? In 3D space, shouldn’t 3 be enough?

To see why we really need 6, let’s look at the inertia tensor. This is a matrix, I, that we use to multiply the angular velocity vector of an object, ω, to get the angular momentum, L.

The velocity of a point mass whose angular velocity is ω is given by:

v = ω × r

where r=(x,y,z) gives the coordinates of the point mass.

The linear momentum is:

p = m v = m ω × r

and the angular momentum is:

L = r × p = m r × (ω × r)

To get the same thing using matrices, note that we can write the cross product of r with any vector like ω as:

r × ω = C(r) ω

where C(r) is the matrix:

0 –z y
z 0 –x
–y x 0

This lets us write:

L = m r × (ω × r)
= –m r × (r × ω)
= –m C(r)^2 ω

Minus the square of the matrix C(r) is:

y^2+z^2 –xy –xz
–xy x^2+z^2 –yz
–xz –yz x^2+y^2

So the inertia tensor for a point mass is:

I = –m C(r)^2

This is the matrix above, multiplied by m.

In general, we add up (or integrate) over all the point masses in the body, to get the inertia tensor for the whole thing.

The inertia tensor we obtain this way will always be a symmetric matrix, so it can be specified with 6 numbers: 3 on the diagonal, and 3 above. So the inertia tensors belong to a 6-dimensional space.

I have taught Linear
Algebra in university (many years ago), but I still struggle with getting a proper feeling for tensors.

Greg's example was OK, simple enough, but I wonder if there is an easy and readable introduction into tensor theory.

That's cute, and certainly easy to read!

an excellent start!

Maybe, I should try to write my own manual.

During my (not so long) teaching career, I learned a lot myself in the process.

Are there really "many, many people" using VR-chat?

I don't think, I know a single one of them in real life.

Regarding VR for work: Isn't it incredibly annoying to wear heavy glasses for hours?

I thought VR was mainly a thing for porn.

mina,
@mina@berlin.social avatar

@tshirtman

I am actually not into VR at all - I don't even play any video games (I have slow reactions and no patience to learn rules and controls. Despite being often impressed by the graphics and appreciating good story lines when I see other people play, it's not a thing made for me).

As far as ergonomics go: I never understood why people choose laptops over desktops.

mina,
@mina@berlin.social avatar

@tshirtman

I'm pretty sure, VR headsets will be much lighter in the future.

Still: I don't like glasses at all. I even prefer to keep my eyes half shut to wearing sunglasses (I occasionally do, but jut to look cool).

If I'm ever going to need a visual aid (probability is high, of course), I pray to be able to use contact lenses.

For those who aren’t aware, Microsoft have decided to bake essentially an infostealer into base Windows OS and enable by default.

From the Microsoft FAQ: “Note that Recall does not perform content moderation. It will not hide information such as passwords or financial account numbers."

Info is stored locally - but rather than something like Redline stealing your local browser password vault, now they can just steal the last 3 months of everything you’ve typed and viewed in one database.
