Queer hacker girl/muscle girl.

Cursed systems appreciator who has spent a lot of time thinking about CI/dev tools/platform eng.

Frequently interested in things people think are "too difficult" or "witchcraft": analog electronics design, music, chemistry/materials science, qualia, math?

Very amused by the social class implications of food as interpreted by soulless marketing departments that I see every time I shop at a Whole Foods. There are 24 kinds of salami and 0 bologna.

(Also very annoyed by this.)

They're both even Italian words! But they have different histories in 20th century America

Anyway, I was there to get ingredients for Olivier Salad which I have been missing for approximately 40 years, and which I think is wonderful because it is the opposite of American yuppie food values. (I am making this one with summer sausage)

If the sun wants to kill me (and give me wrinkles), why does it feel so good?

I was recently prompted to read this 2015 article about raising kids https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/the-secret-to-raising-smart-kids1/ again and it's given me a chance to reflect on how I was praised for being smart as a kid, but the only feedback I got around effort was disappointment in my lack of it.

It's only been concurrent with transitioning that I've learned to overcome fear of failure and find a kind of ambition based in the idea that maybe if I put more effort in, I'll (sometimes) get more results out.

Letting go of beliefs about my inherent competence (and incompetence) at certain things and just trying them has probably changed me more than anything else in life. You don't know how good you can be until you try to improve. You don't often even know how much you'll enjoy it until you're partway through that process.

Me: "Ah, time to enjoy some simple CodeCAD, where if you take care, everything is reasonable"

CAD: "You have found today's Algorithm Surprise API! This object will henceforth have its coordinate system rotated by 180 degrees, but only 50% of the times you click render! Hopefully all your followup operations are rotationally symmetrical!"

@danderson every time we do floating point arithmetic, Dedekind and Cantor are rolling in their graves

It's definitely academic software/data when their homepage tells you how to cite it in BibTeX format, but you can't find a license file anywhere

I'm just trying to teach myself to prove some math things (writing them down in LaTeX because my handwriting is not great) but the computer is horny 😂

Yes, I first used TeX a very, very long time ago, and even if I never learned a lot of the usual LaTeX macros, it feels rather comfortable to me.

TFW not sure if the thing you're thinking of is actually something which is uncountably infinite or just another Hilbert Hotel.

So apparently Washington has a specific state regulation prohibiting the use of shoe fitting fluoroscopes.

I wonder how long that one's been on the books for. I hope nobody's been trying to use those in the last century...

I'm thinking back to the time, earlier in my career, I was employed to do devops stuff related to web crawling, fixed one of the toilets in our small office (converted old house) rather than wait for the useless property management company.

Everyone seemed amazed, and I just had applied a little knowledge and 30 seconds of effort to a situation outside of the job description

The most striking experience of being queer was realizing that sometimes your mind can't tell the difference between wanting to be like a person and wanting to date them

recursive,
@recursive@hachyderm.io avatar

The thing where I've been realizing this is that I had a certain idea of a woman I wanted to date about 20 years ago... and actually that's the person I've become.

A lesson I take from this is that it's wonderful to seek other people for connection, open-ended experiences, new ideas, but you need to consider that if something more concrete feels missing in your life, you maybe just need to do/become that thing.
