The CBM 8050 saga continues. I have reassembled the drive and wanted to test it. It seems the following issues are at hand:
At least drive 0 has a speed issue, needs calibration. All format commands return a speed error. I might need to apply the resistor fix I did on my other drive, lowering the resistance and increasing RPM.
Drive 1 seems to have an issue with the optical sensor for write protection. Either the sensor or the infrared LED doesn't work. I might have plugged in the cables wrong.

Onwards with the
I managed to calibrate the drive 0 to 300RPM. This is good! No need to do the resistor bodge as in my other drive!

It turns out that this 7404 on the drive 1 deals with the write protect signal, also for drive 0! I didn’t have this connected for this calibration!

Furthermore the solder joints on the pin header were all cracked. I added fresh solder and reflowed them. This should help with the write protect of drive 1 as well!

But sadly drive 0 still doesn’t format disks. It doesn’t give a speed error anymore, but a read error! Maybe something wrong with the write circuit…? Sometimes it gets to 40-50%…

The exact error that I am getting is 23. interesting enough reading from a floppy written in my other 8050 works fine. So my guess is that this is indeed an issue with writing on this particular drive.

Writing works absolutely fine on drive 0. Well, the status LED blinks red once in a while, so maybe there are intermittent errors, but at least it works! I could copy many hundreds of blocks onto an already formatted disk. But formatting still doesn't work. Now we have to debug. What can we test to see what's happening on the analog board?

@metin After Jack Tramiel left there was no visionary left who ruled Commodore. Apple struggled after Jobs left, because there, too, no visionary was left. Successful companies exist because they are ruled by dictators with a vision. Failing companies, too. But the reverse doesn't exist I think: Successful companies without visionaries. If ideas get too diluted by too many in power, a company might exist and survive, but won't be making breakthroughs like Commodore did in the early days.

The CBM 8050 utilizes MN2114 SRAM chips, which are 1Kx4 SRAMs. The advantage is that they don't require refresh, as DRAMs do. But they were of course more expensive. However as there are only 8 for a total of 4KB of memory the cost factor was probably not that great. Plus otherwise you would have had to have extra ICs for the refresh signals...

Of all the ICs on the 8050 mainboard the 6502 looks the worst. Still works fine, of course. But if it ever fails it’s rather easy to replace.

This is the SoftROM for the PET. I will be using it as an 8K RAM expansion on the PET, instead of a flexible option ROM. It is mapped to $9000-AFFF.

Question to my bubble: how to I compile a GAL .PLD file to a .JED file? I know that one can use WinCUPL, but is there a (command line) open source replacement for that? I am not feeling like trying to get a Windows program running now...

We have a resounding success: 8K of cache is detected by the interpreter!

And Zork 1 loads quite fast! Further benchmarking will follow, also from a real drive -- I just loaded this from SD2PET. I will put this in a future video, so keep your eyes peeled!

Swapped the reset cap on my Mark III, so now I can use the (knockoff) EverDrive on it. 10µF to 0.1µF is all it takes. Thanks to Neto from SMSPower for figuring this out.
