I had some leftover egg whites, so I decided to try making a homemade yolk-less mayonnaise for the first time.

I have never made homemade mayonnaise before. New skill get!

It came out a bit too lemony, but still tasty. I call this a success.

Anyway, behold: my First of Mayo!

A potem przyszła jeszcze bardziej przerażająca myśl. A co jeżeli ja też jestem takim nudziarzem? Może będę do nich pasował jak ulał... I tak chcę tam pójść i się przekonać. Najwyżej się uchlam i wtedy na pewno się będę dobrze bawił.

It's 2024. This is MSNBC asking you not to read A People's Guide to Capitalism https://www.nbcnews.com/news/investigations/russia-trying-exploit-americas-divisions-war-gaza-rcna149759

> A favorite theme of Russian information operations is to paint America as a failing democratic state, according to U.S. officials and researchers

Does that make an agent of Russia for not believing in America the way I believe in people?

Then a source even admits that Russian propaganda has no impact on the direct political unrest. What is the point of these outlets if they only spread FUD?

rysiek,
@rysiek@mstdn.social avatar

@jalcine it always baffled me that whenever there is something like this going on — say, Russia trying to exploit the divisions in the USA — inevitably the solution peddled is:

> stop examining the divisions and trying to understand the underlying causes!

instead of:

> we need to fix the underlying causes of these divisions, post-haste!

It's like if someone found a vulnerability in a piece of software, and the response is "don't you dare tell anyone!" rather than "shit we need to fix this!"

Torment Nexus is inevitable; if we didn't make it, someone else would.

It's good it was us, because we can deploy it least unethically.

It is of course unfortunate that it kills a person a day, but we estimate that within a million years it will have caused slight enjoyment for over9000³²² people.

The amount of pleasure is, clearly, incomparably higher in the long run than the amount of current suffering caused by it.

So we had a moral duty to create and profit from this here Torment Nexus!

If you've ever found yourself missing the "good old days" of the , what is it that you miss? (Interpret "it" broadly: specific websites? types of activities? feelings? etc.) And approximately when were those good old days?

No wrong answers — I'm working on an article and wanted to get some outside thoughts.

rysiek,
@rysiek@mstdn.social avatar

@molly0xfff static HTML websites.

Without infinite scroll, MiBs of JavaScript to render a single-page information website, the slowness, the badly reimplemented in JS scroll, the accessibility issues of all that, and the general jankyness.

With links working immediately, instead of a weird half-second delay because every link is now overloaded with fifty different event handlers that are not actually needed for any of the functionality.

And with the "Back" button working.

Tech companies have realized that their AI models are trained on children and are enabling CSAM so they're going to try to iterate their way out of it regardless of the wreckage

https://www.404media.co/tech-companies-promise-to-try-to-do-something-about-all-the-ai-csam-theyre-enabling/

rysiek,
@rysiek@mstdn.social avatar

@drahardja @jasonkoebler

> I’m skeptical that we can confidently categorize generated CSAM in an automated way without lots of false positives

It is basically impossible.

But more importantly — and this is constantly missed in such conversations! — what is CSAM is contextual.

A photo of a naked baby sent between parents and close family is most definitely not CSAM. Photo sent between teenage kids infatuated with one another also.

Change the context, and suddenly same photo is CSAM.

rysiek,
@rysiek@mstdn.social avatar

@drahardja @jasonkoebler

Which means there is no technical way of sorting this out!

If identical photos can simultaneously be and not be CSAM, depending on context, trying to create a software filter based on some photo characteristics of what is or isn't CSAM is outright folly.

rysiek,
@rysiek@mstdn.social avatar

@drahardja

> While that may be true of human-generated images, I think a stronger line can be drawn for generated images.

But how would that work in practice? There are no tools currently that can reliably tell if an image was or was not synthetically generated…

And the generators are being improved specifically to make it even harder to spot synthetically generated images.

@jasonkoebler

rysiek,
@rysiek@mstdn.social avatar

@drahardja oh yeah, that's a good point. And they kinda sorta do, but currently as far as I understand on the input (prompt) side.

Of course running these kinds of filters on the output side would be way more expensive to the service, so that won't happen unless they are forced to.

But yeah, this is an interesting thought!

@mvilain dunno perhaps that's a bit stigmatizing? As if people deeply knowledgeable about technology or networking could not have social skills and be generally, you know, nice people? I have plenty of counter-examples in my social circles.
