A model for attenuation and speed of sound on Mars' surface. Thanks to section 1, I realized that somehow it had escaped me that there are sound recordings from Venus 🤯

@65dBnoise don't they usually take a navcam context after supercam? I'm guessing it's this one, so it sould be around the center somewhere...

Feels a bit random, I seem to remember similar small details before. I wonder what triggered the observation, can I borrow the tag you use to go back to things when the Notebook gets updated and see what they were looking at?

@65dBnoise @tom30519 Yeah, that's the tag, now following it, thx!

Ok, so your context photo is from sol 1148. Still nothing out of the Mars ordinary (= extraordinary 😉 ), wonder why that specific rock. That sol had also SuperCam taking a telescopic view towards BrightAngel-like layers, nice!

This is Bright Angel, a light colored rock formation in the ancient Neretva Vallis riverbed; the next scientific target for #Perseverance .

Looking at all those loose rocks on the steep slope above it, it's good that the geologically interesting parts are (I guess) those farthest from them.

Still mesmerized by the multiple wavy patterns on the Neretva ripples (likely cause, wind sorting https://deepspace.social/)

I think the best views are still from sol 1110, best on low phase angle from Mastcam. Here are my fav ripples, with @NeV_T 's treatment.

@65dBnoise @stim3on do you think there's even a better way to increase the contrast of those waves (I can't get better results with my tools). The ultimate test is to reveal that subtle wave to the right of the blue line

@sharponlooker@mastodon.social avatar

@65dBnoise Thank you! An improvement, specially the 2nd one. I count 5 wavetrains on the lower ripple, that subtle one is still so dim...

You got fantastic colours and contrasts on your treatment yesterday, is there such a lightning difference between these 2 sols?

sharponlooker,
@sharponlooker@mastodon.social avatar

@65dBnoise totally understand. I'm juggling between the sol 1110 gigapan, @stim3on 's from sol 1130 (https://gigapan.com/gigapans/234668) and your "artistic" treatment and they all convey the same thing in so similar but so different ways 😉

sharponlooker,
@sharponlooker@mastodon.social avatar

@65dBnoise and still, it was the one rendering that made me see the bands (the "it" in the darkness 😉)

sharponlooker,
@sharponlooker@mastodon.social avatar

@65dBnoise it's kind of funny that y'all are focusing (rightly so) on what can be inferred about Ingenuity and I can't shut up about "waves in the sand" 😂 Apologies for the distraction

sharponlooker,
@sharponlooker@mastodon.social avatar

@65dBnoise Aye to that! I couldn't help yday but think "have I just realized water is wet?" abt those bands. But after some elder panorama browsing, nope, they aren't common. I've seen papers coming to well-thought out conclusions on less datapoints than these, so it wouldn't surprise me they'll end up being used for science.

Or, who knows, if Perseverance wanders back years from now and images them again, maybe they can be used as markers of aeolian processes along Ingenuity's gathered data 😉

sharponlooker,
@sharponlooker@mastodon.social avatar

@65dBnoise I don't think these ripples move/grow that fast, and it's perched rather high, maybe she even shields that crest, who knows, IANAG™ 😉
