Yas. It might feature big hulking men with durags, soul patches, and no necks, but it totally surprised me back in the day especially in co-op with its quite different take on shooting monsters in the face and we’ve been fans ever since. Cover systems and horde mode started here. I’m very much in for a prequel https://mastodon.gamedev.place/@djlink/112588224500212373

wow wow a new Gears of War, a prequel set in the emergence day events!!! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EC20gLfUHeA

@djlink genuinely stoked for this. I didn’t play GoW for ages thinking it was too bro heavy and CoD like but I eventually played it co-op with my wife and we loved it, have played and enjoyed all of them

I assembled some parts for a PC I intended to be my Linux test workstation, POSTed fine and then I realised the cooler was too big for the case and I couldn’t get the lid back on 😭 Guess I’m transplanting everything into my even older spare case then

(I can’t just leave the top off, we have a cat who will absolutely eat the cables and in fact did try while I was building)

Man, this old jalopy hasn’t been opened in a while huh

The last time this was fired up was at the tail end of my tenure as Ogre3D lead

I’ve been slowly working on a second playthrough of Elden Ring deliberately picking up the bits I missed the first time, and found several surprisingly large areas I’d never seen before, some that I knew I’d missed, and some which I accidentally found. Then a friend told me I had to have done X to play the DLC and I’d never even heard of it. One wiki trip later and i found it: an optional area off another optional area, and another few hours of hidden gameplay. What an insane game

I’ve been baking with honey instead of sugar lately and it’s surprising how much difference it makes to the colour of the crust on everything. It develops a really deep reddish brown colour and has extra crunch, while not affecting the texture of the inside. I dig it

I've had web hosting for 20+ years and given how much cheaper all the components in the service have gotten in that time (CPU cycles, bandwidth, storage), by rights we should by now all have our own hosting for federated services for pennies or bundled with our internet service. Why is it still so expensive? I used to run databases on a potato compared to now

@kimau Do individuals really need CDNs? I've never run one for my personal websites. I feel like this is one of those things where "best practice" is often applied blindly regardless of scale.

Virtualised servers is sort of my point - I think everyone should just have some server time for free provided by their ISP, and we should have web software efficient enough to run within that and do all the basic things everyone wants to do. I know it's not as simple as that, but still

@btsherratt Yeah I feel like VPSs are basically commodity now but a) you have to be a dev to use one and b) web software has grown in overhead to fill the space given to it when it probably could fit in much smaller spaces if it was designed that way

@kimau to me that's more of a problem of AWS charging models - why does AWS cost you but Cloudflare doesn't? These are solved issues, but somehow we're still jumping through over-complex multi-vendor hoops to solve them

I'm well chuffed that our dishwasher has been fixed by an actual engineer who knew what he was doing; diagnosed the problem, replaced the part (pump impeller detached through wear), done in less than an hour. I'm a big believer in fixing things (or getting them fixed) rather than the typical throw away & replace culture, and the engineer said the rest of the machine looked to be in perfect nick so hopefully we'll get a bunch more years out of it. 👍

@toerror everything appears good here, no visible plastics issues, fingers crossed

Having a heated discussion about C++'s const, and how I think it's silly formalism and simply gets in the way of quickly implementing systems, and it's a bit,

sinbad,
@sinbad@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@glassbottommeg it’s C++, it’s gonna break somehow 😉

Having said thatnot using const on a reference argument fundamentally changes how it appears in BPs so there’s that

sinbad,
@sinbad@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@glassbottommeg having said that I do kinda like const for some things, right up until the things need to do some cacheing and then you’re throwing mutable around and ehhh

Tightened up my melee collision traces, realised I was picking up the character collision cylinder which is much too generous (used for walk surfaces & spacing from obstacles).

So now it's better. Ouch. Not the face!
