Old Stars Don't Have Hot Jupiters

Hot jupiters are giant planets that orbit extremely close to their stars, completing an orbit in a few days or hours. We have nothing like them in the Solar System, but astronomers think they're present in roughly 1% of star systems. But all stars? According to a new study, hot jupiters are mainly a young star thing. They looked at all the hot jupiters discovered so far, compared them against the estimated age of the stars, and found that the young stars had hot jupiters. They suggest that orbital decay pulls hot jupiters closer and close until they're inevitably consumed, which is why we don't see them around old stars.

@fraser if a young star had a hot jupiter that it ate, it seems really unlikely that any small rocky planets would be left in the Goldilocks zone.

@nyrath I didn't read it, yet, but do they say where all the material comes from?

That's a lot of mass!

@mschomm @nyrath maybe this star is the binary partner of the star hosting the ring?

I'm really stretching here.

I’m in Gaviota and was able to get this slo mo of a dragonfly landing on its perch. I think it’s a meadowhawk. The slo mo on my camera requires me to pre-focus and then hope it’s capturing at just the right moment so this took awhile.

swope,

@Jgbird do dragonflies have different modes for wing flapping? Like front-left/rear-right together, or front-pair/back-pair alternating?

I'm imagining something analogous to walk-trot-canter-gallop on quadrupeds.

I'm trying to remember scifi novels featuring interstellar colonies created by emigrants from the state of Texas. Basically cowboys in outer space. So far I have:

For Texas and Zed by Zach Huges
Lone Star Planet (aka A Planet for Texans) by H. Beam Piper

But I have a nagging feeling I am forgetting a third novel. Does anyone know any others?

swope,
@swope@mstdn.plus avatar

@maxthefox @nyrath is "new whatever" mainly an English colony thing?

Spanish expansion was mainly by missions named after saints, right? Santa Lo Que.

Conspiracy theorists are really upset about this concept. But I enjoy taking 3 minutes to get groceries.

Why do companies each spend hundreds of thousands of dollars annually on federal ? So that when the threatens their business model, they're empowered to push back — as they did this week with their comments on the powered-lift SFAR. https://theaircurrent.com/industry-strategy/evtol-sfar-comments-powered-lift/

swope,
@swope@mstdn.plus avatar

@elanhead can't quote the article because the text is locked... But if the manufacturers know that there's huge variation in the flight characteristics, should they expect that pilot training is going to be highly specialized to a type?

What does a QWERTY typing speed score mean if every manufacturer's keyboard has a different layout?
