The MISSION IMPOSSIBLE SERIES

rm4,

Saw that Mission Impossible no. 8 is delayed until May 2025 :( and also interestingly may not bear the "Dead Reckoning - Part II" name. It was originally slated for June 2024.

#MissionImpossible #TomCruise #Paramount

rm4,

@mattmaison Yeah i didn't hate it but i thought Fallout was really great and was looking for no 7 to come close. I guess this delay is happening cause of the strikes etc

@rm4

Yeah, the MI movies are what they are, and I like them in general.

StabilnoLabilno,

Finding a long-term place to live at a normal price seems to be #MissionImpossible in #Split, and I'm becoming increasingly frustrated. #Tourism, #gentrification, and short-term rentals made sure that this city is becoming more unlivable every year and it's turning into a #scenography for tourists. It breaks my heart to say this because this is where I grew up, I love this city, but the future doesn't look good.
Tourism will destroy #Mediterranean.

What do you think the fate of is?

I was almost totally sold on the theory that she’s still alive. She survived being stabbed by Gabriel and only Ethan knows it, in order to fool the Entity.

I went to my second watch with this in mind. The movie prepares you for it - Ethan knows how to do it, Ilsa has done it before. She’s officially dead through most of the movie, until she gets out of the shadows to rescue Ethan.

rm4,

@vi i think she is ded unfortunately :(

@vi@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@rm4 Such a bummer. She’s one of the best characters the saga has ever had, if not the best.

Three shows on have captured my interest. The TV series (the first movie really did do Jim Phelps dirty), the original 90210 and the 21 Jumpstreet series.

On the last one, I googled Dustin Nguyen's image and he has aged like fine wine.

CardamineGreen,

So I watched the new movie! It has a very current theme and looks at the threatening impact of disinformation and AI in a world where the internet is shaping our realities. The action scenes are good, some great - Rebecca Ferguson my queen is stunning in a duel, so graceful <3 At the same time, the movie is also a bit disjointed and could have treated some of its female characters better -> Spoilers in next post.

CardamineGreen,

@rm4 Exactly! Like you say, the last three movies clearly established Elsa as the first woman who was a perfect match for Ethan and his lifestyle, someone who was able to hold her own due to having the same background as him and who was the one who would be by his side for good. And now this movie retcons this 'she's the one' portrayal by introducing the next gf. I don't even mind New Girl, she is great! But it's just really badly handled o.O

rm4,

@CardamineGreen Hmm. I don't know if i got the idea that he liked her or at least that seemed onesided coming from her. But storywise yeah grace is replacing Elsa as the main female lead

Reflections during cinema visit ( and many trailers):

What does it say about us as a society that one of the things we are most scared about is superior intelligence?

I personally am less worried about artificial intelligence than human stupidity.

pvonhellermannn,
@pvonhellermannn@mastodon.green avatar

@laurendw my experience is the opposite really - i can see a strong correlation between lack of intelligence and lack of compassion (eg right eing politicians, Daily Mail readers, Elon Musk). Or rather, perhaps it is that compassion is a form of intelligence for me. But no need to have a big debate about this, I wasn’t being very serious anyway 😊

laurendw,

@pvonhellermannn in my experience it's like anything else, intelligence and compassion are semi-independent traits. But in popular culture and films it's different, with the trope of the nerdy scientist who doesn't care about people.

Y'all forget about that time Limp Bizkit wrote a rap with the Mission Impossible theme song.

@yurnidiot I've been trying to forget Limp Bizkit in general.

@alexanderhay as we all have

clacke, en-us

I watched because why the heck not, mindless actions is entertaining enough.

It was surprisingly exciting and interesting, engaging even. I was at the edge of my seat for long stretches of time and even cared a bit about the characters and where the story would go.

clacke,

@rm4 It's even a good watch without Part 2, but now that I've enjoyed this I'll see that next year too.

I wasn't even planning to watch this one just like I didn't see the previous one, I only went because someone else did.

rm4,

@clacke Oh wow MI6 "Fallout" the previous one is still my all time favorite of the 7 so far. Defintely worth checking out

jonkk,

I’m going in to see Oppenheimer tomorrow, but the week before I saw Dead Reckoning Part One and I highly recommend it. Such a goofy yet sincere spy action movie. Absolutely loved every bit of it. Go see it!

@jonkk I'm not sure I want to wait for the second part. I might wait until I can watch both in quick succession

jonkk,

@annika it’s pretty self-contained. like all the other mission impossible movies it basically ends with “and your next mission..” but it doesn’t feel like half a movie, imo.

The titles of the 7th and 8th Mission: Impossible films have the most parts that I know of:

  1. Mission
  2. Impossible
  3. Dead Reckoning
  4. Part One / Part Two

Titles with 2 parts often use a colon as a separator (e.g., Avatar: The Way of Water or The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift) then add a dash for the 3rd (e.g., John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum or The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1). For M:I7/8, they gave up adding a 3rd separator. 😆

Every film is even impossibler than the previous one. Except for MI2, which is your average day in James Bond’s life.

rm4,

@vi Heh heh yeah! Seems like it!

You know the thing that stops me from watching the latest movie are the words Part one.
Silly I know.

betterloxed,

This is a very stale observation, but I am an old fangirl, but while I do rue the modern fanvid iteration (more often known as fancams, if I understand the current terminology correctly) where videos aren't the full length of the song, the fact that fandom has access now to modern editing suites that can layer multiple audio tracks and visual layers is friggin awesome.

Anyway, I'm just here enjoying any vids of Ethan Hunt being an idiot. Or the same theme but now set to Queen. (tbh idk what am I supposed to call them these days)

betterloxed,

though tbh my favourite one in recent years is this Bucky Barnes one, set to Rasputin. This is on the same level of iconic as that StarTrek one set to Tik Tok, honestly.

MI: DR – P1 is very silly. But that's okay. The plot could have been lifted from a 1970s cereal box designed to give kids something to read as they munch on their Cornflakes and toast. But we're not here for literary prowess. We're here for the chases, the fights, the smouldering romantic tension, and the tongue-in-cheek comedy. It delivers on all those fronts in spades. I enjoyed it. It didn't rise to great level, but it's worth seeing. 8/10.

geekvibesnation,

races to the top spot this weekend with $56.3M (3-day) and $80M (5-day)

See how the rest of the Top 5 did this weekend at the box office

rm4,

Saw Saturday at the largest (real) IMAX on westcoast in SoCal here. Was a really good film. Doesn't top Fallout in my personal ranking of the 7 films but its definitely up there. Looking forward to Part II !!!

Just the loop timing alone on this is cool, but it's also a really good subtle commercial. And just cool.

betterloxed,

The thing about MIDR1's retcon about the nature of IMF, other than it's hitting my La Femme Nikita button, is that it retroactively works to provide a real interesting character arc that actually normalizes MI2 in a way that makes it canonical not just technically but also in characterization, which let's face it, behaves in this franchise more like a typical tv series pre-long form narrative became the expected offering.

It's really funny, the fact that he's basically a Nikita/Michael provides really tasty ficcing material about why his personality ping-pongs between 1, 2 and 3, and how Nyah is as seminal to his formation as Ethan the spy as the death of his entire team in the first movie. Hmmm.
