Hmm, they mention using pheromones and a swarm of bees as a "radical idea" to attack enemies for the military in "The Men Who Stare At Goats", LOL. (It would work, but you can't cart around beehives, really)

gparker,
@gparker@discuss.systems avatar

@ai6yr The best-funded militaries did take the bee swarm threat seriously: today they all have CBRN (chemical/bee/radiological/nuclear) suits and vehicles available.

Does anyone happen to know whether the ".xm" tracker format is little or big endian

According to wikipedia this is the best available documentation https://github.com/milkytracker/MilkyTracker/blob/master/resources/reference/xm-form.txt and it does not say. I assume it's little endian because DOS, and because the one big-endian field in the documentation is specifically marked as such, but like, idk

@ai6yr "Sensible" as in "can be sensed by a thermometer".

When you remove heat from hot, humid air there are two effects. Some of the energy goes into decreasing the temperature of the air; this is sensible cooling of sensible heat, because it can measured by a thermometer. Some of the energy goes into condensing water vapor; this is latent cooling of latent heat, because the gas to liquid phase change is an energy transfer with no thermometer-sensible difference.

My view of the solar eclipse was photobombed by a satellite transit.

gparker,
@gparker@discuss.systems avatar

@joat This object (and the one that followed it in train less than a minute later) had faint thin lines extending out to each side, perhaps some sort of booms or edge-on structure.

So yes, obviously aliens, but maybe not the same aliens that you’re thinking of.

gparker,
@gparker@discuss.systems avatar

@joat I assume the circular silhouette is either a solar array pointed up at the sun (circular deployment is common) or a dish antenna or imaging mirror pointed down at the earth.

gparker,
@gparker@discuss.systems avatar

@ancientjames @joat Good point, that does seem to be too big or too close to be a satellite. If they’re balloons then they must be moving horizontally across the sky, if I have the orientation correct, and with significant speed.

Yay! Finally, the vehicle won't start at all... rather than being intermittent. New starter or cables needed, likely. Has been spotty for months, but neither I nor my mechanic had been able to diagnose it since it was so intermittent. Intermittent car problems are worse than car problems.

gparker,
@gparker@discuss.systems avatar

@ai6yr Manual or automatic? Bad clutch interlock switch got me once.

gparker,
@gparker@discuss.systems avatar

@ai6yr Currently my kit car starts reliably when it cranks, but sometimes it cranks on the first turn of the key and sometimes you have to turn the key about ten times before it cranks. Intermittent problems are the worst.

Is this the place that blew out? It seems to match the location from the inside pics that show the wing outside the hole, but I’m not sure.

I was wondering about the shape of the hole and this makes it look like an optional door or something that was covered over badly. This looks to match the shape. https://press.coop/@NPR/111710453844540465

gparker,
@gparker@discuss.systems avatar

@schwa @GeekAndDad It's an optional door in the design. On some configurations of the plane it's an emergency door. On the accident plane it is not a door and the hole is blocked off instead (at the factory, I think).
