Apropos of nothing, it's still wild to me now Xitter has ruined social media, and people now use it as a personal broadcasting mechanism instead of, you know, being social.

EU citizens, your vote for the European Parliament election matters much more than you might think.

From and all the way down to : Some important decisions are due.

We noticed populist right-wing forces co-opting "open-source" by "supporting its adoption".

However, they stand for isolationism (hidden behind "tech sovereignty"), and against international collaboration, openness and transparency; which are what makes awesome.

Choose wisely!

jens,
@jens@social.finkhaeuser.de avatar

@Codeberg tech sovereignty can be isolationist, but it more obviously is about not being dependent on overseas tech giants.

Finally, I have defeated my own website and successfully posted something.

For your amusement, I humbly present: what the hell is PID 0?

https://blog.dave.tf/post/linux-pid0/

jens,
@jens@social.finkhaeuser.de avatar

@danderson Thank you for this! It sure does trigger some memories from way back when.

FWIW, the issues with splitting off /usr are recent, relatively speaking. I got into the habit of doing so early on, and haven't stopped until issues started cropping up. I can't quite recall the exact moment.

But there's another (historical) reason, and that is that / needed to be local for system start purposes. Often times, /usr was an NFS mount shared between machines (this is where /usr/local comes...

jens,
@jens@social.finkhaeuser.de avatar

@danderson ... from, it explicitly mounts another local disk in the shared hierarchy).

A strict point of view (though it's not a hill I'll die on) is that if a split /usr causes problems, that's a problem with the software causing the problem, not with the approach of splitting off /usr.

It's not something that was problematic before systemd at any rate. 😬 Not that I'll blame it for something like that, oh no!

Umm... WHAT?

A screenshot of https://f-droid.org/packages/ru.tech.imageresizershrinker/

EDIT: Just for clarity, I'm expressing surprise that an android app would have lossy PNG as an option, not at the idea of pre-compressing a PNG to make it lossy (generally by reducing the number of colors, but also by doing things like pixellating unimportant regions of an image, such as a desktop wallpaper). All techniques I enjoy using, as well.

???

jens,
@jens@social.finkhaeuser.de avatar

@RL_Dane Lossy PNG would have been if I'd taken a screenshot of the terminal running mtr while on the train.

A sparrow decided to build a nest just above my office window, and likes to sit on the balcony railings now. When I have the balcony door open in summer to let air in, he tends to eye me suspiciously.

Look, birb, I need to breathe, OK? I don't eat birds, so your chicks will be fine.

I’m crying on the bus (again) because some middle school kids decided that for their “design challenge” they’d envision an emergency food delivery drone that could fly high enough and fast enough that no one could shoot it down. And no one asked why someone would want to shoot down a food delivery drone— or why you couldn’t just drive a truck.

jens,
@jens@social.finkhaeuser.de avatar

@futurebird Turns out, there's serious research money going into that stuff.

In a previous job, I was also working on how not to turn such drones into weapons, by making the communications link resilient and encrypted.

Granted, our scenarios were food delivery OR emergency supplies, never emergency food supplies...

Why, apt. Why can you not update a package if a file you expect to be there is in the file system that you're supposed to install is missing?

jens,
@jens@social.finkhaeuser.de avatar

I have written a script, I kid you not, that runs "apt --fix-broken install" in a loop, parses the error output for missing file errors, touches them, and re-runs until it succeeds.

It's beyond bonkers.

jens,
@jens@social.finkhaeuser.de avatar

And, yes, this is because I installed some Python packages system-wide via pip a long time ago.

RL_Dane, to random

I just did the thing YOU NEVER, EVER DO.

I repeated a dd command (under doas to root) WITHOUT LOOKING AT THE DEVICE NAME.

FORTUNATELY, the only collateral damage was an unneeded 4GB file under /dev/.

PHEW!!!

P.S... do files created in /dev somehow make it to /, even though it's its own mountpoint? How does that work?

jens,
@jens@social.finkhaeuser.de avatar

@RL_Dane Good habit: type hash and space, then paste the command line.

You'll be forced to edit it anyway.

I am loving this wholesale attack on Musk's X by continuing to call it Twitter.

I've been sucked into listening to cable news all day every day as background noise for the past 10 weeks.

Well, very rarely do people call it X.

This breakdown feels right about what people call it:

97% Twitter
2% X, the company formerly known as Twitter
1% X

jens,
@jens@social.finkhaeuser.de avatar

@elan I like Xitter, with the X pronounced as sh.

Generally speaking, at least when talking about hobbies, I will be much more positive to your point of view, even if I mostly disagree with you, if you are coming forth with what you want to see than if you are complaining about what already exists. Regardless of your intent, the latter is yucking someone else’s yum almost certainly (and if not, you are attacking a straw man), which is a bad habit from other social media that we need to end.

jens,
@jens@social.finkhaeuser.de avatar

@linnaeus It's easier to describe the sharp edges one wishes to avoid, than the space left between them.

Please support the your answer if you feel like it.

jens,

@RickiTarr Alien Queen.

It boils down to preferring a horrible end to horror without end.

There's a chance I can trap her in a cargo hold and let her starve or kick her into space with a power lifter.

Vader could mind control me to do whatever he wants until he tires of me, including not kicking him into space.

I don't know if multilingual people face this, but sometimes when I want to speak Mandarin and I am trying to remember a word, my 🧠 unhelpfully provides the word in a different language.
So sometimes I end up speaking Mandarin and Hokkien at the same time 😅

jens,
@jens@social.finkhaeuser.de avatar

@liztai yeah, absolutely. Our kids speak Italian and German, and keep mixing them. I'm starting to get to the point where I remember words most easily in the language I most use them in, so I sometimes use the same kind of mix.
