Riverside County: Prescribed Burn Scheduled at Lake Mathews.

Monday, June 3rd, through Friday, June 14th, 2024... CAL FIRE / Riverside County Fire Department, in cooperation with Riverside
County Habitat Conservation Agency, and Metropolitan Water District, will be conducting a a vegetation management prescribed burn at Lake Mathews. The prescribed burn at Lake Mathews accomplishes the goal of rehabilitating the burrowing owl and Stephens’ Kangaroo Rat (SKR) habitat through eradication of invasive, non-native grasses and weed species. This allows mammal species to find food and make homes.

I just made a Linux joke without even trying while talking about something entirely different and I have so many questions about my life choices. (The context was that I was informed that the same man is responsible for both unleaded gasoline and cfc based refrigerants, thereby dooming the earth twice, to which I replied, “oh, like how the same guy gave us PulseAudio and systemd?”)

@ai6yr tbh, neither of those has ever been a concern. I did get a bit of an infected bite from brushing a cat at a shelter, but I'd been pushing so hard with her that I couldn't blame her a bit.

Sitting down on the front step of number 10 to pet Larry and tell anyone that happens by that this is your intention? Not hard. Getting a collection of civil servants and party operators who would quite like to keep their jobs to get that press conference set up? Hard

@ai6yr @me_valentijn the CPU chips go for about $40-$50 apiece, two per node, and the ram is probably worth another $50-$75 per node over 4032ish nodes (on eBay). The eWaste scrap value of the rest probably covers a fair percentage of the overhead

am I the only one completely uninvested in raspberry pi stuff? there always seems to be some fervour about their newest unobtainium SBC doodad and I never quite understand the use-case for the price.

@gsuberland I'm not a fan myself, but the key feature of the Pi is that you've got an ecosystem of decent software, documentation, tools, and add-ons to work from. And a lot of ompeting board in that niche not only haven't been able to deliver that, they've enough tendency to iterate faster than community support can keep up with

@thomasfuchs @MLE_online we had a US and developing wild version of the Astra here - I think it cut off in '92 but... I thought it was kinda neat and if they hadn't all both rusted away and failed in various catastrophic ways I'd have really loved to build as close to a fast astra as I could make

@ai6yr give the state the power to do this and it doesn't matter if you're carrying your documents - they'll be called forgeries or get "lost". You certainly won't have them or a dollar or your phone or a credit card in your possession when you get dumped on the street in an inhospitable place in a foreign country.

As someone whose previous line of work was in the hotel industry, I have to say I find it very funny how many people, with the backlash against Airbnb, are just now discovering that extended stay hotels with full kitchens and multi-bedroom suites exist.
