I would like to learn a tracker.

Am I better off:

  • Learning Renoise

  • Trying out OpenMPT because it's open source and putting up with open source UI ugliness

  • Downloading the first result off Google for "rust music tracker" (this turns out to be an open source project abandoned by its owner in 2022), adopting and forking it, and spending the next two years writing features for it but never producing either completed music or releasable software?

For some reason I thought renoise was open source :( It's not, although interestingly it does have both lua plugins and a Linux version

@mcc lua plugins?

@ale I legitimately love Lua. I'm now trying to move away from it, but only because it's bad at writing large programs. But plugins are small.

@mcc You can try the tracker our musician put in our megademo 😅

Said musician went on to make music for the Bitmap Brothers and Sony (Killzone, Horizon Zero Dawn).

(Sorry, I'm just namedropping here.)

@aerique This is intense

@aerique That's super fun but

  • I'd like something that the UI can be run on a modern computer, so I don't find myself growing out of it.

  • I'd really really like something where the format has an existing player library written in Rust (I'm actually targeting an embedded platform where building Rust is easier than building C!)

@mcc You definitely shouldn’t do that third thing but you make it sound really tempting somehow.

@mcc I love renoise and have found that the glitziness of DSP effects over a pure sampler makes me more excited to make music.

But it’s pretty weird program and I don’t think it’ll shorten your learning curve any (not that OpenMPT is some kind of stepping stone to renoise. The only other tracker that Renoise reminds me of is Fasttracker 2)

@mcc The angel on my shoulder is whispering "use renoise" but the devil is wagging it's tail and prodding me with it's pitchfork over that third option.

@mcc I actually have a renoise license, but I don't know for what version. It worked well enough on linux but I remember having to use "jack" and "jack" utterly fucked my audio in most other apps.
