Dangerous outbreak in children tied to mixing up irrigation and drinking water

Of 13 children sickened, 7 hospitalized and 2 had life-threatening complications.

@arstechnica 'twould be helpful if the headline identified what the outbreak is.

abcderian,

@zalasur @arstechnica that was my assumption as well; but I think "Dangerous outbreak in children" needs a little more context than us guessing what it probably is.

e.coli? Industrial runoff? Something else? Inquiring minds want to know!

What's the protocol when someone emails you asking you to "give up" the domain you've owned for 25 years because "You're only using it for a blog", and they want to use it for a community they want to build, and they don't want to have "JoinFoo" dot com.

Do nothing? Explain that other TLDs are available? Tell them to "Jog on?"

While I'm complaining about software: I do not like the new UI change in Mastodon.social where the numbers of boosts/favorites are no longer bolded. I think UI should guide the eye and reduce the cognitive load of interpreting given information. My desire for a browser plugin/alternate frontend that reproduces the Mastodon v3.5.19 web frontend precisely continues to grow with each passing day

abcderian,

@mcc I thought the term came from the movie 'Gaslight', where a man tries to make his wife think she's going insane by changing the light brightness in their home then telling her "No, it's fine, the light's exactly the same as it's always been"?

    @SecurityWriter if one is in front of the other drivers, one doesn't need to worry about what stupid thing the other drivers might do- like crossing four lanes of traffic to get to an off-ramp, or slamming on the brakes because a shadow passed in front of them.

    I've personally been nearly killed three times on the highways by drivers not taking other traffic into account, or not taking the weather into account and sliding at speed on black ice. I'm much prefer to have any potential risks behind me.

    That said, I'm not going to blast the speed limit or swerve in and out of traffic to get ahead of people: safe and steady, either leave a huge following distance or get around them.

    @DenOfEarth @manu @pluralistic Is this something different from the abbreviations they used to use for all phone numbers? They used to use the letters associated with the digits as a quick code for operators - for instance, in Central New York there was an exchange that began 756 or 753: those numbers were referenced as 'Skyline', so to call 756-8413 (made up number, do not call!) You would ask the operator for 'Skyline 6-8413'.

    Anyone remember Beechwood 4-5789?

    Pedestrians, it should be our right to be distracted. It should be our right to walk and listen to music / look at the sky / cute dogs / snowflakes and not worry about getting killed. Nothing about that is dangerous except for CARS. Don't let them make you believe you are the problem.

    abcderian,
    @abcderian@techhub.social avatar

    @mbonsma I can't fully agree. Cars - and distracted, unsafe driving - are far more dangerous to pedestrians than anything else, and that's not the responsibility of pedestrians. But cars are not the one and only danger pedestrians face, especially if they're not paying attention to where they're going. Distracted people walk into trees or signs or buildings, fall off piers, trip on tree roots or uneven sidewalks or each other, fall into ravines and rivers.

    At a certain point, one's safety is one's own responsibility, and that includes situational awareness. Or put another way: don't trust your safety to other people doing the right thing.

    abcderian,
    @abcderian@techhub.social avatar

    @rodhilton

    One of my favorite things about my current employer: if a meeting is scheduled for 60 minutes and everything gets covered in 15, we end the meeting - no one feels compelled to run out the clock.

    And if a recurring meeting is scheduled but there's no business for it, that instance gets canceled.

    This doesn't present the occasional 20 minute meeting turning into an 80 minute meeting, but I'll take what I can get🙂
