Something that bothers me a lot is how basically every single bit of software that has been created in the last 10 years has major bugs.

We used to care a lot more about bugs it feels like, if something had bugs that would crash stuff, you would just not release that version, you'd work on it until those bugs were fixed; you don't release new features without removing the bugs that it introduces

These days everything is about features, because that's what sells, uptime isn't sexy anymore.

while I think that there's definitely an overhyping of AI/ML things and an abuse of the word for marketing purposes, I do also think that it could

  1. allow us to improve in every possible way
  2. including doing things with LESS power
  3. including having better, more equitable algorithms
  4. including making programs better, fix bugs, make UX/UI better, etc

It's a tool. Tools can be used for good or bad. If you scream it's inherently bad, only the bad people will keep using it. It's in your hands

A while ago I came up with this experiment to show the impact of your brain's model of the environment on how you keep your balance and such.

It involves standing on your toes (one or two leg whichever you're comfortable with), optionally closing your eyes, imagining a heavy big tail behind your back, and moving it from left to right, while standing on your toes.

If all goes well you should feel your balance shift from one to the other leg, while you move that phantom limb around behind you.

been thinking (for quite a while) about getting quails and putting them in my frontyard..

every time I look on second hand sites like marktplaats there appears to be someone who has some for sale, making it very tempting to immediately go for it.

I'd have to put more thorough fencing all around it though. And a little house for shelter/sleep.

.. but those are available on there too and make me want to get going with it even more because it's not even that expensive and aaa pls help fedi 😭

Things may seem bleak sometimes with how many things are wrong in the world

But keep in mind that we're doing better than we've ever been in human history, and the fact we have time and space to report and work on those bleak things, shows how much we're improving every single day

I would be more worried if we couldn't name anything in the world to improve upon

Don't worry too much, enjoy what's here, most or all of these bleak things will go away some day, because we're working on them today

Does anyone know of an opensource Deck app that actually works?

I happily used the Nextcloud Deck app from the Fdroid store for a while, but at some point the devs introduced multithreading in the initial sync, and it has simply never worked since then, not on any phone I tried it on, including the version from the Play store on an unmodified Pixel phone, so I can only assume it hasn't worked for quite a lot of people in quite a while now.

I have a theory that people who dislike the caps attached to bottles, actually don't push the cap away far enough to click into resting position on the side, causing it to press against their face when they try drink from the bottle.

I don't see any other reason to dislike them anyway, if you use them properly they don't get in the way, it means you never have to look for or place the cap anywhere while pouring, you can't lose the cap, it means you can drink with one hand while e.g biking, etc🤷

Oh yesss it's all coming together, dump valve nulled and induction system tightened up extra, now just install that fuel pump upgrade and I should have a whole bunch of torque and power extra

[Person filming under the hood of a car, car is standing in a garage] Twingo GT 2011, turbo dump valve got nulled so it can build up a lot more pressure now

What if you could create parts of an AGI by just taking the LLMs as a step in a self feeding process? Like it sounds dumb but, LLMs are kind of like our outer cortices, and those don't truly intrinsically memorize anything either.. They sit in short term memory and are then slowly fed and encoded into those outer brain parts.
We could perhaps emulate that process by giving an LLM a fuckton of (fast and slow available) context, emulating short and mid-term memory and using that for training LLMs?

If you had to build a datacenter today, and you didn't have the option to not build another one because everyone is using more internet (I don't get the 'just use less internet' argument when everyone is using more and more internet including when broadcasting that argument 🥴)

How would you cool it:

How does everyone keep their passwords stored?

I'm just curious, polls are anonymous.

Myself I use KeepassXC + selfhosted filestorage (nextcloud/seafile)

always fun when you wake up and your shit is down for no reason, you go investigate and find the nginx loadbalancer rebooting endlessly, you restart and update the container and it's.. fine again? the hell? nothing weird going on in the logs as far as I can tell, just at some point nginx decided to start restarting endlessly for no apparent reason, as if docker-gen created some weird config files, which got reset upon restart? creepy and weird. I guess I'll run a manual update just to be sure?

well that's the last time I buy a HP laptop, elitebook's touchpad is already breaking down (and was terrible to begin with), there's some issue that makes it hit random keys on the keyboard once in a while including the power button (wtf?!), and the CPU is clearly limited by the cooling solution that doesn't even rev up to max when you do a benchmark.

It's a decent laptop for 600, but for the 2.5k it would've cost new I would've returned it to be honest, enterprise laptops can't be THIS bad? 😶

I know this is going to upset some people, but I really think the whole "AI is bad" discourse is kind of tiring and broken.

AI/ML is not going to go away just because some of you declared it 'bad'

If you have TANGIBLE feedback that developers with all the good will in the world working on these kinda things CAN IMPLEMENT, then by all means give it to them.
But if you just want to be completely ignored then simply continue yelling "AI is bad" without giving any context or reasoning behind it 🤷

I just had to upload this myself so I could pin it.

I think it's a really important message beyond just the fact that computers and networks are an amazing gift to society, I think it's equally or more important to note that conformity is a curse.

We should all be able to have our own opinions and ways to view the world, without being resented for it, without being cast out for it.

It's diversity and inclusion that make this world a greater place; not some narrative that disagreement is wrong

We've always had to have conformity with the current view, disagree with the church, and you were punished as a heretic, with the political system as a revolutionary, with the scientific establishment as a charlatan, with the educational system as a failure. If you didn't fit the mould, you were rejected. But, ironically, the latest product of that way of doing things, is a new instrument, a new system, that while it could make conformity more rigid, more totalitarian than ever before in history, it could also blow everything wide open. Because with it, we could operate on the basis that values and standards and ethics and facts and truth all depend on what your view of the world is and that there may be as many views of that as there are people. And with this capable of keeping a tally on those millions of opinions voiced electronically, we might be able to lift the limitations of conforming to any centralised representational form of government, originally invented because there was no way for everybody's voice to be heard. You might be able to give everybody unhindered, untested access to knowledge-- You might with that and much more break the mould that has held us back since the beginning, in a future world [..] [..]An open society, tolerant of every view[..] [...] Utopia? Why? If, as I've said all along, the universe is, at any time, what you say say it is, then say. James Burke, Day the Universe Changed (1985) Play Mute sound Hide video Expand video Full screen

what if datacenters would be required to generate all power on-premises with green methods? Or some portion of it?

It currently seems far fetched, but with a rule like that you'd be sure to force the industry to both invest in the improvement of green energy production, as well as forcing the industry to create more efficient technology.

For example, an Nvidia H100 can perform at 76% of its performance with half of its power usage.

All we really have to do is force the industry to care more.

Apparently 'the USA' (probably some republican?) sent this threat to the ICJ for trying to issue an arrest warrant for Netanyahu for their war crimes.

I have a feeling there's bits of zionists spread out across the globe, infiltrated into various govt institutions, pressuring and sending out these kinds of letters, pretending it's for the good of everyone but they just have the very specific agenda of letting Israel get away with whatever they want. Probably similar to Russian infiltration tbh
