The perfect Mastodon moderation principle

anthropy,
@anthropy@mastodon.derg.nz avatar

@kddk @ErikUden I was also going to bring this up, but on the other hand, bigotry often isn't reasonable, it's just baseless prejudices and discrimination, and engaging with it can also set a bad precedent; you don't argue with a fool.

I think it's important to give people a chance to change, asking them to not do something that is objectively bigoted is totally reasonable, and explaining them why is too, but if someone insists on being an arse at some point yeeting really is the better option.

[serious, no joke replies or guesses / autotranslation please]

do I know anyone native or otherwise very fluent in Chinese who can tell me the correct term for a plated edge connector, like you might find on a PCIe card? specifically the "gold fingers" style connector feature you would find on the PCB side, not the plastic connector it slots into.

I've had an absolute nightmare trying to communicate this feature to a Shenzhen-based PCB vendor and I would like it to be easier in future.

english should get smallification words like dutch so you can be like "henlo yas i would liek to have a breadje with cheemzies and a glassje milkies" and call your friends cutesy and smol by just adding je/tje to their names

anthropy,
@anthropy@mastodon.derg.nz avatar

@Doridian I suppose you could say "anthropytje" or "doridiannetje" :3

anthropy,
@anthropy@mastodon.derg.nz avatar

@Doridian yea in some cases it makes sense, basically in your specific case you'd add 'etje' as verkleinwoord, but that would make the A sound different so you also have to add an N

https://onzetaal.nl/taalloket/verkleinvormen-algemene-regels it's a bit convoluted once you get into the 'special cases' parts :P

like it seems technically speaking anthropy would be "anthropy'tje" (yes with the ' in there)

suddenly realised im not sure ive ever heard the word federal outside of an american context

anthropy,
@anthropy@mastodon.derg.nz avatar

@mynotaurus afaik it's because america is a federal government, i.e the states of america are a single country combined that can't leave, whereas in europe, each country is their own entity that can leave the EU at any time.

I think federal comes from federating local government tasks to the states, allowing them to have some autonomy in some ways? but not sure, would have to look it up

While training at the gym, I accidentally looked at the sun reflecting off a windshield and that triggered my scintillating scotoma. I spent the final third of my gym time minus about a third of my vision. A bright circle of electric blue-white light, like sparks from an arc welder, strobed across my field of vision. I was afraid I wouldn’t be ok to ride my bike home, but thankfully it went away after about fifteen minutes. I guess I’m going to have to wear my sunglasses at the gym.

Whenever this strikes, I’m always scared it will not go away. At its worst, I’ve had it 24/7 for four months across about 75% of my vision. Because it’s such an unusual disorder, most folks have no idea how incapacitating it is. I usually get a sort of hangover afterwards which leaves me with increased brain fog.

I suspect it might have been caused by the Irvings spraying DDT over my home a bunch of times when I was a little kid.

anthropy,
@anthropy@mastodon.derg.nz avatar

@Shanmonster I also get these, though they usually don't last more than 30 minutes unless I don't take a break. for me I think it's often a sign I haven't slept enough and overworked my brain, but it's hard to tell what exactly triggers it, because I'd say 'bright light conditions' but I've also had them in the early morning while still in bed.
24/7 for 4 months sounds rough :( maybe you can ask a doctor about anti epilepsy medication, since it's technically a mini-seizure in the optical center?

anthropy,
@anthropy@mastodon.derg.nz avatar

@Shanmonster ah :/ yea they are often heavy weird medication types, i don't use them either anymore, but they work better for some than others. I also hope for more research into the topic because it can definitely be really problematic.

I'm glad to hear you're at least able to deal with it somewhat, it can definitely be heavy sometimes

someone sent me this, hard to find the source and it seems translated from some small journalist blog, but it's funny as hell:

"During the inauguration, Putin said that the dead of past generations “have the right to vote, and this voice is the traditions that have developed and which we are obliged to honor.” It is by taking into account the votes of the dead that Russian democracy, according to Isaev, differs from Western ones, where only the votes of living people are counted."

alternatively I heard they throw parties sometimes, maybe if you get 512 hobbyte drunk enough that they see double you might end up with roughly 4khobbit

Apparently 'the USA' (probably some republican?) sent this threat to the ICJ for trying to issue an arrest warrant for Netanyahu for their war crimes.

I have a feeling there's bits of zionists spread out across the globe, infiltrated into various govt institutions, pressuring and sending out these kinds of letters, pretending it's for the good of everyone but they just have the very specific agenda of letting Israel get away with whatever they want. Probably similar to Russian infiltration tbh

@feliks not sure how many messages it would be but i do kinda prefer a single thing to copy rather than a lot of small things, but I could copy a few messages

I currently don't see them for some reason though (see screenshot)

you could also paste it into this folder maybe http://seafile.dragonhive.net/u/d/440a173e700e488481da/

anthropy,
@anthropy@mastodon.derg.nz avatar

@feliks oh that's a pain I thought seafile would accept those, my bad! And thanks for the pastebin link, I'll apply it right away. I should set up my own pastebin at some point I guess 🤔

anthropy,
@anthropy@mastodon.derg.nz avatar

@feliks nice! I'll keep those in mind, HackMD looks nice but maybe a bit too much for what I need, I'll probably use something like Hastebin or brew something myself, because I already have collaborative tools and I mostly need a place to easily dump and share text.

I've had some ideas for a while, might put those on an unused domain I still have as a url shortener / text hoster / maybe small images thing, but we'll see how it goes

I just had to upload this myself so I could pin it.

I think it's a really important message beyond just the fact that computers and networks are an amazing gift to society, I think it's equally or more important to note that conformity is a curse.

We should all be able to have our own opinions and ways to view the world, without being resented for it, without being cast out for it.

It's diversity and inclusion that make this world a greater place; not some narrative that disagreement is wrong

We've always had to have conformity with the current view, disagree with the church, and you were punished as a heretic, with the political system as a revolutionary, with the scientific establishment as a charlatan, with the educational system as a failure. If you didn't fit the mould, you were rejected. But, ironically, the latest product of that way of doing things, is a new instrument, a new system, that while it could make conformity more rigid, more totalitarian than ever before in history, it could also blow everything wide open. Because with it, we could operate on the basis that values and standards and ethics and facts and truth all depend on what your view of the world is and that there may be as many views of that as there are people. And with this capable of keeping a tally on those millions of opinions voiced electronically, we might be able to lift the limitations of conforming to any centralised representational form of government, originally invented because there was no way for everybody's voice to be heard. You might be able to give everybody unhindered, untested access to knowledge-- You might with that and much more break the mould that has held us back since the beginning, in a future world [..] [..]An open society, tolerant of every view[..] [...] Utopia? Why? If, as I've said all along, the universe is, at any time, what you say say it is, then say. James Burke, Day the Universe Changed (1985) Play Mute sound Hide video Expand video Full screen
