@marnier@mastodon.social

Environmental policy nerd, plus I like to make and fix things: #permaculture #textilearts #3Dprinting #cooking #gardening
Gubmint lawyer by trade (this is strictly a personal account).
I like reading about law stuff, social structure stuff, ecology, public health, public goods, and such. I like to see things people made or fixed or grew or noticed themselves. I don’t talk about myself TOO much, and I boost things I find funny, beautiful or interesting.

I am sad, but I have some flowers. Scarlet amaryllis keeps on coming back here in Zone 7; I leave it in the ground all winter, well buried in fallen leaves and mulch, and it’s fine. Elderflowers are almost ready to bloom. And the first butterfly bush flower is here.

"Yule is the ritual centre of gravity in the animist year. In pre-Christian reckoning it was also the anchor point between the cycles of the moon and the sun. The New King, the first New Moon after the Winter Solstice, was the first day of the second Yule month (Midwinter Month/January), and the Full Moon of this month was the apex of Heathen Yule celebrations, but with the rise of Christianity the ritual focus moved closer to the Winter Solstice..." @nathanlovestrees i always felt that way too. I leave my house tree up until the last possible minute (the night before final mulch collection, usually mid-Jan), leave lights up or redeploy the tree lights, and make an extra effort to throw little house parties/get-togethers/backyard bonfires in Jan and Feb.

You guys, I just spent a year turning this useless sloped backyard with useless muddy grass on it into a couple of slightly more useful #gardening terraces. All of my exercise for the past many months has consisted of shoveling dirt and woodchips and dry-stacking old concrete blocks and bricks I scavenged from the little house they tore down next door to put up the much bigger house you can see in the “after” photo. Third photo is the view from above. #landscaping #LiftHeavyThings #recycling

The same sloped backyard, but it has been adorned with two concrete block terraces with curved walls and a central staircase.

Ok #introduction post. Pic is me in a monster mask I made a few years ago.

Used to litigate, but it was too much drama, so I got a PhD; not sure what I was thinking other than “anything but litigation pls.” It turned out ok; met my spouse, moved around, stint at #WHOSTP, met good people, got sucked back into lawyering as a public servant - much better than litigation.

Otherwise I’m nice enough, I guess, mostly. Probably #adhd, fall in love a lot, but easily bored.

Before the fell apart, I was listening to four days a week. The hosts did a great job of presenting difficult topics in a way that was engaging and informative. I weirdly miss bar exam questions.

After it fell apart, I stopped listening to all of the podcasts each host was associated with and have been making an effort to diversify the podcasts I listen to. Strict Scrutiny and 5-4 have been a good start. Do you have any to share?

Can I just marvel at/publicly appreciate the amazing #dirt at my house? It’s pinker in person, glittery with these gorgeous flaky micaceous chunks all throughout, absolutely 0% organic matter, never cared for or built up or cultivated, never had a chunk of #compost waved in its direction, pure as the day it was made and then promptly buried under builder-grade turf rolls. I think it’s beautiful and I just want to save a portrait or two before I mix it with brown stuff and try to grow things.

#FungiFriday I couldn’t believe this wasn’t blue paint when I picked up this old chunk of lilac wood… not used to seeing this color in nature. It is a fungus called cobalt crust (according to iNaturalist)
