Really liking the OpenLight theme by Obelisk for @FreeCAD

prokoudine,

@Triffen do you mean the light blue tint of the background? Yeah, agreed

Dear LazyWeb, how do people generally feel about the Elastic license where you have access to code and you can modify and run it, but not as a paid service that you sell to others?

@zemarmot, @CmykStudent

"Text layers can now be rendered in the full image's gamut (not sRGB only anymore), though colors are trimmed to the gamut and are always 8-bit", but

"Text outline colors are now rendered in float in the full image's gamut, without precision loss".

Is this a temporary limitation for text fills?

How to explain to users what it means to lay a solid foundation for new features: replacing old engine with GEGL in
@GIMP was 18 years of work, then a few months of one volunteer's time and +1233/-238 lines of code changes in 20 files to get basic non-destructive editing into the program

Ondsel ES 2024.1 is out. It's a fork of @FreeCAD with extras, all available under the same license (LGPLv2+): tech preview of integrated assembly workbench, massive Sketcher improvements, various smaller UX/UI improvements, and collaboration tools

Release video was a commissioned project by @CRogers, made with @Blender and @inkscape. Excellent work, all done in a timely manner, totally recommended.

An exercise in... nihilism or self-reflection, depending on how you look at it.
I look at Youtube home page, read titles, especially ones with questions, and mentally add '..and what do I care?' in the end.
"How much did YouTube pay me for 1 million views, and what do I care?" Not a bit, in fact.
'AI art is dying!' Lies, 8 months old, and what do I care? Even if that's true, it will be born again eventually.
And so on, and so forth. I often read that page like a blog, instead of watching ;)

prokoudine,

@Triffen "Harry Potter and the Order of Phoenix, and what do I care?" :)

Okay, so @GIMP is one more step closer to having an infinite canvas. Paint and clone tools now have an option to automatically expand layers as you go. Here is a quick explainer (text version dropping soon)

As an ex-USSR kid I was taught to operate a lathe and solder stuff at school. Is it something kids elsewhere in the world did too or maybe still do as part of their curriculum?

prokoudine,

@davidrevoy Hah, same age and years! Your program sounds more interesting though! We didn't do photography chemicals stuff, for one

prokoudine,

@nekohayo @davidrevoy @federicomena wood rot maybe, bit rot — not so much! :)

prokoudine,

@pocketvj @davidrevoy The part about dancing your names obviously needs an elaboration! :)

prokoudine,

@davidrevoy @pocketvj Hah, we had a similar thing in elementary school, except it was called 'ritmika', but it was Dalcroze's eurhythmics really.

Shit is getting real: a minimally functional integrated assembly workbench in @FreeCAD is just one pull request in review shy of being at your doorstep.

Until v1.0, expect polish and minor enhancements. And after that... Mamma mia, so much to be done!

Excellent writeup by @prokoudine about redesigning menus of complex programs. I love this solution of using a menu with an integrated search bar, akin to having a command palette while still retaining logical grouping of actions.

Wish @libreoffice could have something like it.

https://librearts.org/2023/11/radical-redesign-of-gimp/

prokoudine,

@libreoffice @astrojuanlu That's not about just the searching through menus — GIMP has had that since 2010 in dev and since 2018 in a release. It's about having a substitution for menu (plus search) when you don't have one.

We're thrilled to share that the GNOME Project is receiving an investment from the Sovereign Tech Fund!

prokoudine,

@gnome The news says "Design and prototype a new accessibility stack". I'm not sure what to make of it. Haven't you already introduced a new accessibility API to GTK4? Or is it about making new GTK apps automatically accessible, without writing custom code, like back in ATK days? Is there some sort of a roadmap already available or expected soon?

Last year, people said that Creative Freedom Summit should have had @FreeCAD and @ardour track. Well, here is your chance! The call for proposals is now open, deadine for submissions is Nov 24

Remember Glimpse NX, a project that tried to reimagine @GIMP UI? Their mockups looked interesting but didn't have a good answer what to do with features in the main menu. Well, a new 3D CAD program called Dune 3D by @karotte might just have a solution for that missing piece. Which poses an interesting question: could that redesign be revived?
