@TheConversationUS @blackmastodon This caused some FEELS because I have a deep love of Beethoven. But. The author is not wrong. How many other composers do we not even know because their works were destroyed or overlooked because they are from women or non-European cultures? It’s a sad thought but also makes me want to do more to make sure non-white, non-male voices are heard in all contexts, but especially music.

Marvel is rebranding its TV shows to show fans that they don't necessarily have to watch everything in order to understand what's going on. “The hope is that, like the comics, you can just pop in anywhere and have a satisfying experience. @CultureDesk @billyjoebowers I wouldn’t mind keeping up if the stories felt different and took more story-telling risks. The sameness and lack of depth got super boring. Even if the quality fluctuated or the stories didn’t always land for me, it would have been better than the surface-level stories that never got deeper than “look at our snarky action heroes.”

How would it feel? What would it say about us? if we remain a nation that builds weapons of war, effective weapons, our best technology— and none of the people cared what purpose they served? they could defend a people violated by invading armies, they could be a tool to sweep a people away and not even our young people full of idealism think it worth questioning. Streets quiet, peaceful, another beautiful spring— and not one willing to listen, imagine the rumble of distant munitions.

    @jollyorc @mekkaokereke I find it comforting that some things at least aren’t just USian problems. :/ But at least you aren’t cutting beneficial programs to pay for the corrupt police, it sounds like. Days like this I think about moving, but still determined to fight for a better US than we have today.

    Thank the lord for Tish James. If you look at the research she did into this bond it made my head spin and I'm a math teacher. She understands all of these fancy finance games, and I guess you'd need to do her job in NYC. We have the worst/best "banking wizards" sometimes they break the laws of physics, sometimes they just break laws.

    This bond is a stinker. I wonder what Trump promised the guy to let his company implode as sacrifice to avoid the full fee?

    @futurebird Earlier this month, Hankey told Reuters that he didn’t expect the legal and media scrutiny that came with putting up Trump’s bond. “We thought it would be an easy procedure that wouldn’t involve other legal problems and it’s not turning out that way,” he said.

    Well, that sounds like a big ol' lie to me. Nothing about Trump is not news. How do you not assume this would put you under the microscope? You don't. You just think you're smarter than everybody else.

    People on Twitter are debating whether a person using uncommon words like "delve" are trying to sound smarter than they are, or worse, are ChatGPT bots, because "normal" people don't talk like that.

    You don't have to get upset, or embroiled in the debate. Not worth the time or attention. But I'll share some important context as your friendly neighborhood Nigerian 🙋🏿‍♂️

    Many Nigerians have bigger English language vocabularies and better command of grammar than the typical American or English person

    I am still getting hate mail for my blog post, this time from a neighbor. She was so angry it took her a few days to calm down enough to write to me (in all caps!)

    (I shut down comments yesterday)

    When I wrote analysis for the Washington Post, I sometimes got angry email from MAGA people.

    I did get a memorable letter from a librarian in Tennessee who was enraged at how I portrayed Andrew Jackson in one of my books.

    But this has never happened.

    I think it's interesting.

    @Teri_Kanefield That is such a foreign concept to me. I guess maybe there’s some pleasure in feeling part of the group, but as someone who’s felt like an outsider most of the time, it doesn’t attract me. Though I do enjoy some of the late night hosts dunking on various people, I guess. But I recognize they’re also entertainers, where their goal is to get a laugh, but also not delve into nuance. If I want actual info, I don’t go to entertainers. And I like info! :)

    🤡There's a non-zero percent of the US population that genuinely believes that The NFL, Joe Biden, "The Pentagon" and Taylor Swift, conspired to create a fake relationship and rig the NFL playoffs, so that Taylor Swift could pop out in the middle of the Superbowl halftime show and say "Vote for Biden!"

    I wish I was kidding.

    I don't really care for Taylor Swift or American football, so seeing this play out just makes me wonder why people care so much either way. But I did leave most of my fangirlish tendencies by the roadside some time ago, except maybe for Ewan-Obiwan, so could just be that I'm too cynical.

    @georgetakei Planes are already loud and uncomfortable. Playing a sound machine is as annoying as playing music or a movie without headphones. I don’t like being that person, but if you can’t travel by air without disturbing other people with your noise, don’t travel by air. I know not all other alternatives are good, and staying home may be lonely, but the level of entitlement here is just extreme. And the “I could have murdered her” comment is just gross.

    @BlackAzizAnansi That’s just so stupid. Our COO was anti-remote when he first started, but he changed his tune seeing how we all worked during covid. Now we hire from all over the country. A broader applicant pool is great. And applicants have definitely caught on, because they all ask “How remote is this position really?” And are then relieved to learn my team spans the country.
