Delhi might not be new anymore but it sure is hot there. 50.5C/122.9F. I can't imagine what that would be like. Incredible.

@Brian_Mahoney Anything above 50C is pretty much lethal - at those temperatures the body cannot radiate heat anymore. Goodbye thermal homeostasis.

I thought Sandra Bollocks cried a lot in Gravity. JLop outdoes her with the histrionics in Atlas, however. Holy fuck, can she just stop blubbing for 5 bloody minutes. I hate these movies (does it show). Give me Alien for a strong scifi female lead.

Listening to Metal Machine Music by for the first time, and I kinda love it. I think from now on I'm going to pretend my tinnitus is a cover of this album, on an eternal loop.

@buffyleigh @SpaceAce Wow, that was a great read, thanks. I was expecting something glib and ironic, but it really is a thoughtful and well written piece. A nice bookend to Lester Bangs' review.

Folks with libraries, I've heard some folks say that they have 10TB of audio files in their libraries. Approximately how many individual tracks is that? I'm assuming that it's a lot of lossless files, but I'm curious what the average file size is and the number of files that comprise such a library.

flockofnazguls,
@flockofnazguls@mastodon.flockofnazguls.com avatar

@wez I’ve ripped my CD collection to lossless FLAC, and each album is approximately 400-500 MB. At approximately 10 tracks an album, let’s say about 45 MB per track. So for lossless rips this works out to about 200,000 tracks.

Obviously if you’re dealing with lossy files you’ll be able to cram in potentially much more.

flockofnazguls,
@flockofnazguls@mastodon.flockofnazguls.com avatar

@wez It’s a challenge. I think I have about 1000 albums ripped so far. I was initially using Roon but have since wandered into Plex for library management; I’m tempted to poke a hole in my router security so that I can access my library with Plexamp, but paranoia about getting hacked has so far kept me from doing so.

flockofnazguls,
@flockofnazguls@mastodon.flockofnazguls.com avatar

@wez

I’m now looking more towards FOSS offerings. The whole #MusicBrainz thing is really cool, and I’ve been using MusicBrainz Picard on Linux recently to rip and manage metadata for my latest CD acquisitions. I think KDE and GNOME have some neat library management tools as well, if I recall correctly.

flockofnazguls,
@flockofnazguls@mastodon.flockofnazguls.com avatar

@wez Funny you should mention Sonos since I have been using the app to call up my albums just using the folder structure.

What's the deal with the app now?

flockofnazguls,
@flockofnazguls@mastodon.flockofnazguls.com avatar

@wez Oh drat. I'll need to look into this - thanks!

flockofnazguls,
@flockofnazguls@mastodon.flockofnazguls.com avatar

@wez Ugh. I just checked the updated app. It’s awful!!! I can’t even access my tracks using the file structure.

Dear thrift shop owners: I get that there's a vinyl resurgence, and you want to cash in on it, but $5 a pop for some dingy old 45s? LOL no.

The sit down version of Spy Hunter was particularly cool, not least because of the speakers blasting the theme from Peter Gunn right by your head, but the upright cabinet was far more common. I spent a lot of time playing this game very, very badly.

Dear Mastodon: I have an NLC Squid Axon with a burnt component (I’m guessing a capacitor from the shape). I really want to get this fixed, but have never picked up a soldering iron.

Is it doable for me to fix this myself given my lack of electronics experience? What’s the minimum I would need to know?

I’d like to be able to attain a sufficient skill set to repair my modules, but not sure what the most efficient way to go about that.

Any suggestions are welcome. I’m missing my 🦑.
