Is the ‘Crush’ Backlash a Dead Canary in the Apple Brand Coal Mine?

stevex,

@daringfireball My daughter, an aspiring creative, said the ad made her sad, seeing all those creative tools that she loves getting destroyed. I found it a little surprising that Apple would have done this. A little disclaimer that no real creative tools were destroyed in the making of this ad, if true, would have helped.

That's a new one! Never seen an Xcode upload get corrupted along the way before

stevex,
@stevex@mastodon.social avatar

@stroughtonsmith I have an app that has two different builds from different git branches, built by Xcode Cloud. The branches are currently identical, but I just got this on one of them. The other built fine. How do you corrupt a png file?

Seems like traffic on Mastodon has really dropped off, at least among the people I follow.

@WTL I’ve never been a big poster. I had a pretty good feed here a few months ago but just recently it seemed unusually quiet. Hoping it’s not a trend.

@sindresorhus Are there knowledge worker jobs that would be profitable at $1/hr but not profitable at minimum wage? I think we're going to find out.

In other Apple news, it seems like they're actively adopting the term 'AI' this year, having ignored it previously. The seal now broken, I imagine 'AI’ will be used heavily in iOS 18’s marketing

stevex,

@stroughtonsmith I was kind of looking forward to Apple's oddball marketing name for AI. "Siri Brain" or some such.

When Apple remembers to make new iPads again (any day now.), one thing I'd really like to see is an end to the baby apps. I don't want a stripped-down, half-assed 'iPad experience’ for anything. It's been fourteen years and I'm so over it. Give me real desktop-class apps across iPadOS and visionOS, feature for feature, that can scale all the way up to power a 5K External Display or spatial computing workstation.

A reorderable toolbar doesn't make for a 'desktop-class app’.

stevex,
@stevex@mastodon.social avatar

@stroughtonsmith You can't even build desktop-class apps in SwiftUI without a lot of hacks and workarounds. It's like they're somehow blind to that whole category.

The success of Vision Pro at $3500+ may just give Apple the excuse it needed to start experimenting more with expensive, niche, not-quite-fully-baked products 😅

stevex,
@stevex@mastodon.social avatar

@stroughtonsmith Let's not apply that to the car project.

⭐️ Surprise! @broadcastsapp, @pastelapp and SameGame are all available as native apps for Apple Vision Pro on day one 🥳 Including all the features I've been working on here, like Broadcasts’ Mini Player and positional audio. Seeing Broadcasts running on-device for the first time gave me butterflies; it does feel like the start of something special, and a part of history I didn't want to miss out on

@stroughtonsmith@mastodon.social avatar

I guess we can confirm now after seeing review footage, but the Photos app on visionOS doesn't have the ability to Edit photos, and that was not a quirk of the Simulator 💀

This whole 'rewrite the system apps in SwiftUI!' thing is a huge experiment I guess funded by the AVP group budget, and is just totally unfinished. No reordering homescreen icons, no folders, no Photo editing, no 'merge windows' in Safari, and of course no ports of half the system apps. visionOS 1.0 is for beta testers

stevex,
@stevex@mastodon.social avatar

@stroughtonsmith This must be pushing them to improve SwiftUI, but some of the core problems seem intractable. It's bizarre.

My daughter, who is 12(!), has written an 89k(!) word book that's now available on Amazon. It’s the first in a series(!). Pretty impressive feat. It's similar to the Wings of Fire series and style, so if you know anyone into that (ages range about 8-12), I'd recommend Millennia.

Ice Cubes is a cripple because of List, and no, I don't plan to swap to anything else than SwiftUI List because:

  • I'm lazy
  • It would kill the fun out of the project
  • It's a good demo on performances and other issues List has right now, so Apple can have it in their face all day, every day.

Ice Cubes has around 1 million sessions a month, so I hope some people working on it are making some fixes.

(FIXED! More at the bottom)

I’m having my first foray into SwiftData and the new Observation and I’m getting some errors I don’t know how to fix yet. Can anyone help me?

Complete code: https://pastes.io/bbzuxgknuv

Thanks a lot for any tips!

FIX: In SelectAccountView, selectedAccount didn't have an initial value. Got fixed after I made it optional

@davidbures Try commenting out the bogus error and see if SwiftUI gives you a real error.

Since there's a new version of Xcode I decide to enable TipKit and try it again. Most of the time it displays my tip correctly but I can still sometimes get it to trigger when I switch to another tab (one without a toolbar with the button that has a tip).

Completely baffling. I'm using a basic tip with no rules or anything fancy.

Using the Please Don't Rain app to pull up a forecast for Epcot. After switching to the Settings tab the tip for saving a favorite finally appears.

@MuseumShuffle I've seen that as well. Are you using NavigationSplitView?

    IMO, the biggest hurdles of the Activision Blizzard acquisition are yet to come: how do you fix several huge toxic, angry communities and a string of IPs that are not in a good place.

    Blizzard, in particular, is in real trouble with World of Warcraft, Overwatch and Diablo. It really does feel like the spell over WoW's userbase has been broken, and we've passed an inflection point.

    Microsoft has a lot of work to do

    @stroughtonsmith Dragonflight won back a lot of people, and with Metzen back I think there's a lot of cautious optimism. The Overwatch community is a dumpster fire though.
