A THING I DO NOT LIKE ABOUT PROGRAMMING LANGUAGE ERROR MESSAGES

Language: NullReferenceException, the object was null on line 37

Me: Which object?

Language: The one on line 37

Me: Yes, but which of the objects on line 37?

Language [patronizingly]: It was null

Nodejs: your HTTP request timed out

Me: I'm making like 30 different HTTP calls, which one?

Nodejs: here's a stack trace that contains only framework code and no reference to any of your code

I strongly believe we're within 5 years of the generative AI boom collapsing almost completely, and it will have a profound economic impact, as the use cases for the products being sold almost entirely suck arse.

webcubus,
@webcubus@astrodon.social avatar

@danhulton @GossiTheDog well put. It's not entirely useless, just useless for nearly all of the things we are currently trying to do with it

LillyHerself, to random
@LillyHerself@mastodon.social avatar

@SecurityWriter That is probably a good investment, as I've had a MacBook Air in intensive daily use since 2014, and the only maintenance has been replacing the battery, which I did myself.

webcubus,
@webcubus@astrodon.social avatar

@LillyHerself @SecurityWriter is laptop maintenance a thing? Should I have been tracking down some laptop oil to change?

webcubus,
@webcubus@astrodon.social avatar

@LillyHerself @SecurityWriter I was being cheeky, but I actually don't know what laptop maintenance is. I work on a laptop every day and nearly all of my personal computer usage is also on a laptop...

Remember: it's not your responsibility to improve the world.

If you want to do stuff to make things better, that's great, but it's not automatically your burden.

webcubus,
@webcubus@astrodon.social avatar

@malcircuit I do think it's everyone's responsibility to not make it worse though!

I'm still waiting for those notifications to start streaming in about a geomagnetic storm! In the meantime, I guess I just have to settle for imaging that monster sunspot region. That chunky one in the lower left is the one to watch! (this image is from earlier today)

@WEATHERISHAPPENING yep, Trump isn't going away unless he continues to lose at the ballot box. Criminal trials for crimes he committed are great and necessary, but his party is going to stick with him until it is made clear that they're going to continue to lose as long as he's at the top of the ticket. We have a lovely selection of tulips in our garden, so it's always fun to capture them in different ways. I managed to catch this one with water clinging to it before the sun burned it off.

This is a remarkable graph.

You might have heard that "EV sales are slumping", "people are starting to avoid EVs", etc.

That's not what's happening.

What's happening is "Tesla is cratering so hard that it's skewing the aggregate market data."

webcubus,
@webcubus@astrodon.social avatar

@ShredderFeeder @mhoye it's fine if you don't want one or it doesn't suit your needs. You can just say that without suggesting EVs are bad for everyone.

I spotted this painted turtle at the Broadmoor Wildlife Sanctuary a couple years ago. There were tons of frogs and turtles so it was a fun day for photography.

I spend way more time photographing sea slugs, but this time I took the camera to the garden to find some land slugs. I really like the shine off the slimy coating. Not sure this one will be a big seller, but prints are available 😄

There's this unproven assumption that "we just need to train it more" is the solution to generative AI lying and being generally mid.

What really happens is that with more data, it will approach absolute midness.

If they (as they plan) try to feed to generated-by-AI text to "learn" it will even regress (actually a good Bible quote for this, "as a dog returns to his vomit, so a fool returns to his folly").

webcubus,
@webcubus@astrodon.social avatar

@thomasfuchs That's Fido 3:16 if I'm not mistaken

webcubus,
@webcubus@astrodon.social avatar

@thomasfuchs That assumption could be correct if you train it with good and reliable sources. Can't wait to read Yahoo Answers generated by an engine trained on Yahoo Answers!

It's World Turtle Day, so here's my favorite turtle picture I've taken to date! It's always fun to see a turtle on a dive, especially when they are chill or even curious about us. This individual in Bonaire was not bothered as I snapped some pictures against the backdrop of the beautiful blue water.

For those who aren’t aware, Microsoft have decided to bake essentially an infostealer into base Windows OS and enable by default.

From the Microsoft FAQ: “Note that Recall does not perform content moderation. It will not hide information such as passwords or financial account numbers."

Info is stored locally - but rather than something like Redline stealing your local browser password vault, now they can just steal the last 3 months of everything you’ve typed and viewed in one database.

webcubus,

@GossiTheDog wtf?! This new spyware feature is also going to just casually eat 50 GB of disk space in addition to stealing all of your data.

Clownfish of the day: OK, one more clownfish to share. This time we have tomato clownfish in the beautiful reefs of Apo Island. Wide angle photography is not my specialty, but I really like this reef scene with the clownfish moving through the huge anemone arcing across the surface, giant clam in the foreground, and soft corals in the background.

Who are the people who constantly need AI to make summaries of emails and then go and generate a thousand-word email because a single sentence “isn’t professional”

webcubus,
@webcubus@astrodon.social avatar

@thomasfuchs Molly White had a great article addressing this - if we all use AI to do tasks, we should probably question whether those tasks even need doing. I basically just ignore emails that are too long. Ain't nobody got time for that crap. "This email could have been a much shorter email"
