Anticorp, to micromobility in USA: E-bikes could become more expensive after June 14

Chinese eBikes could become more expensive. eBikes made in the USA and non-tarriff countries should remain unchanged.

Vytle,

This. Plenty of US companies make eBikes, and most of the very high quality bikes come out of somewhere in Europe.

TheFriar,

I mean, yeah I’m all for it. But most of us don’t have the money to buy European/Us made e-bikes. I got mine a few months ago, thankfully. It’s a US company, but they use Chinese parts. It’s a great bike, and I got it on sale for $700. A bunch of the nice ones were like $2500+. So many of us don’t have the option of getting those.

USA seems to be pulling all the wrong moves when it comes to pollution and traffic engineering. It’s as if there’s a race to show who can make a more stupid decision. Yes, e-bikes are really the problem, lets just ignore the rise in traffic incident deaths that are on the rise only in USA while the rest of the world is falling.

JeffreyOrange,

This is even worse because your numbers are already atrocious.

SuperSpruce, to micromobility in USA: E-bikes could become more expensive after June 14

There goes my dreams of having an e-scooter for a good price. Guess I’ll stick to my gas powered motorcycle.

Cheapflation is a term I have been using, akin to shrinkflation, to describe that the affordability of goods over time is going down because consumers get addicted to cheap (often Chinese) alternatives. I think electric mobility is important, but how many Chinese hoverboards are in our landfills? How much CO2 was emitted to ship them all here? Was it all worth it?

We need affordable electric bicycles, but for national security purposes we should manufacture them (and their components) on this continent. People need to make better wages. e-Bikes were left out of the EV tax credits, which needs another look. But I don’t think we really need more semi-disposable chinese e-bike components.

FUCK YOU BIDEN!

Last week, the Biden administration announced dramatic new tariffs on imported goods from China, including an increased tariff on electric vehicles. At the time, it was unclear how the new rules would impact the e-bike market.

on top of the common items on the list this will include nicotine and THC vaping devices

Four years of Biden, four years of Trump, and four years of Obama, and not to mention the Bushes and so on has got us back to the coat hanger days filled with cigarette smoke but hey maybe we might get leaded gasoline back too so

how Democrats or Republicans hold any amount of support is wild

graymess,

It’s a shame Lemmy’s been overrun with liberals because everything you said is true. Downvoters, please point out a single inaccuracy.

ghostdoggtv,

People haven’t caught on to the fact that the Democratic party is another front for Republican policy objectives because it’s not obvious that they’re taking the same donor money. The fast that Biden is making such a bone headed policy move so late in the term tells me that his advisors aren’t really in it to win, therefore neither is he.

PerogiBoi,
@PerogiBoi@lemmy.ca avatar

It’s kind of insane to me how heavily downvoted this is. Are there MAGAs on Lemmy now?

I see 5 up zero down to the comment you replied to. guess it could be an effect of federation but mine interface shows no down votes for ghostdoggtv although I don't see why maga would be downvoting an anti democrat thing.

I got a reply that kbin does not bring in downvotes.

WalrusDragonOnABike,

Kbin doesn’t federate downvotes, only upvotes. So it makes it look like almost no one downvotes.

HubertManne,
HubertManne avatar

ah. that would explain it.

Zomg,

You think Maga is buying ebikes? They shit themselves when they heard about gas stoves.

You’re looking for something that isn’t here (in this thread)

PerogiBoi,
@PerogiBoi@lemmy.ca avatar

That’s a very stupid generalization and dead wrong. MAGA is your neighbour. MAGA is the grocery store clerk. If you truly think MAGA is exclusively meal team 6 then you might have some or many screws loose.

HubertManne,
HubertManne avatar

I agree here. There is stupid everywhere and im sure there are some maga in my town. Not very vocal but that is not surprising given their lack of popularity in the region.

Zomg,

Maga might be my neighbor, but it doesn’t mean they’re good people, sensible, or of good morals, so I don’t see how that matters at all.

I’ve not heard a progressive person shriek about SoCiaLiZM because someone suggested outlawing gas stoves in favor of electric to save the environment, or who rolls coal, or distastes electrical power versus fossil fuels.

So I think Maga not liking ebikes or other EV things is actually pretty factual. There are many a post of shit heads blocking ev chargers with their lifted trucks. I wonder who those people might be on the political spectrum, not including my own personal experience.

PerogiBoi,
@PerogiBoi@lemmy.ca avatar

Then you’ve chosen ignorance and wrote three whole paragraphs congratulating yourself on that stance.

I live in rural Canada. There are MAGA and trump flags and fuck Trudeau flags everywhere. Tons of lifted trucks. Tons of e-bikes. Easy pedalling isn’t just for left leaning people. One day you may understand that and move on from your extremism.

YeetPics,
@YeetPics@mander.xyz avatar

He is right and you’re wrong.

If I had more time I’d write a few paragraphs congratulating the fell, too.

Stay mad 😃

Zomg, (edited )

I don’t negotiate or cooperate with insurrectionists. Fuck em 👍

Maybe when it happens to your country you’ll see things the way I do. Good luck with that.

Accepting MAGA means accepting bigotry against: gay, trans, black, Jewish, and other immigrant people. It also supports white nationalism, replacement theory, “anti-woke”, religious teaching in public schools, unfounded conspiracy, anti-green initiatives, removal of women’s reproductive rights, and many others.

I’m well aware that someone who supports MAGA doesn’t necessarily support all these things. But they also knew what Maga stands for and aid their objectives anyway.

WalrusDragonOnABike,

Probably mostly Biden fans upset that someone probably doesn’t want to vote for Biden for having policies that they don’t want.

The same people probably think the comment they’re downvoting is saying “bOTh paRties aRe thE saME” because reading is hard I guess.

Juice,

People on Lemmy really don’t like any kind of equivocation between the two parties. Also saying that the Dems are a front for Republican objectives isn’t correct either. Republicans are the party of nationalist industrial old money bourgeois, Dems are the party of nouveau riche, international finance capital, tech, and labor bureaucracy.

Leftists identify Democrat politicians as a class enemy, and it’s true that the bourgeois base of the republicans will join the bourgeois base of the democrats in class solidarity if their class interests are threatened. Liberals also have a nasty habit of defending private property above all else which gives lefties the Heebie jeebies, and creates a lot of inter class strife among workers. The bourgeoisie is one thing, just like the working class is one thing, and as much as I believe that workers should unite to fight against their class enemies, the working class is divided into different striae (lower class reserve army of labor vs. Middle class suburban worker for example) that compete for the scraps, so why wouldn’t the ruling capitalists be divided similarly in a fight for the lion’s share? Capitalism is, among other things, a system of coercive forced competition. This competitiveness takes many different historical forms across many divisions in society. As much as I’d like to unite all races, gender expressions, ethnicities, economic groupings against our shared enemies in this class war, we all know it’s not that simple. Competition is how the system perpetuates, it is the driver of monopolization as well as something like an immune system against worker solidarity, the greatest threat to capitalism.

Often the first step in dialectical thinking, the mode of thought that begins to emerge with class consciousness, is an ability to take two things that seem separate and unite them into a single thing by analyzing the relationships that form them. But dialectics is a process that works forward as well as in reverse. We can use it to identify two things that are one, but we should also be able to use it to identify that one thing is also two. Many people see the synthesis between the two parties and draw a conclusion based on that, and go to the internet to proclaim this discovery, which is often met with lots of people who agree rhetorically with the conclusion, making us believe that we are correct in out new knowledge. But part of this consciousness is an ability to deal with contradictions as part of our analysis, whereas the human, or maybe just modernist, tendency is to discard contradiction for the illusion of surety, another byproduct of competitive mode of capitalist evaluation. We have to realize that each revelation is just a new facet of the truth, which is a lifelong pursuit that is shared among class conscious workers, not arrived at finally by an individual. These truths, as well as the basis for them are all historically contingent. Many things about the class struggle never changes, many of the tendencies identified by Marx for example, but many other things are constantly changing.

I would also be remiss to fail to add that there probably is a concerted effort by bad actors to false equivocate democrats and republicans in order to alter political outcomes, propagandize or maybe just breed suspicion. I don’t know if its Russia or China or the democrats or the republicans, probably all of the above plus many many more to different extents. But all these people on Lemmy who detect such bad actors in their communities, I think we have to trust their ability to tell truth from falsehood. even if we don’t agree completely with their conclusions, doesn’t mean they are completely wrong. When working people tell us something we have to listen. We are all victims of propaganda, so dismissing the sincere fear of other workers as propagandized delusion says more about how we falsely view ourselves as part of the working class, than it does about them.

zarcher, to micromobility in Hank’s Cruzbike recumbent road bike: A time trial conquering machine?

While this is a good road bike, the real time trial monsters are the faired recumbent bikes. I personally would prefer a faired recumbent over a car. It keeps you dry, you go to work in a reasonable time due to the speed, and you work out.

Recumbents are a great way to extent the distance you can commute with a bike without requiring electric support.

They are however less common, and thus car drivers dont always take them into account. So be careful when crossing roads.

GbyBE,

That’s another advantage of the faired ones. They draw more attention and in the event that you do crash, they offer some protection as well.

DudeImMacGyver,

If only I could afford one.

GrindingGears, to bicycles in 10 of the biggest game changers in cycling tech

I’d swap Strava for disk brakes. If anything, Strava has been a detriment to cycling by turning a lot of its users into selfish assholes. Quick releases should be on here somewhere as well.

m4,

I agree - I'd even go as far as to remove other stuff like "power meters", "e-bikes" and "smart indoor training" for stuff that has actually improved the act of cycling since its beginning - like, among those you mentioned, alu tubing, tubeless/TPU, sealed cartridges or indexed shifting. I dunno, maybe even belt drivetrains could be in this list somewhere in the future given they can fix their drawbacks.

weew,

Ebikes have arguably been one of the biggest boons to cycling in general. Many people who often wouldn’t have cycled at all are now getting on bikes, and many more people who would have taken a car for a particular trip due to distance or hills are now also taking their ebikes instead.

Ebikes have probably gotten more people riding bikes than anything else on the list.

dubyakay,

Need to add, class1 pedelec with a cap at 25 kmph are fine. The 32 kmph US versions ones are already questionable.

However throttle assist ebikes are a menace.

Dumpdog,

Also, the list is a bit roadie-centric. Add suspension, dropper posts and subtract “smart” indoor training, and Strava.

calamitycastle, to procycling in Vuelta Femenina stage 8: Demi Vollering wins overall title and final mountain stage

Undisputable! No one can climb like her right now

fpslem,

The only rider I thought would give Vollering some competition was Gaia Realini, and she was out after that very nasty crash. (She really should have gone through the concussion protocol, I thought, she couldn’t even walk straight before she got back on the bike.)

And I guess we might need to start including Evita Muzic in the conversation, she didn’t put out the same watts as Vollering on La Laguna Negra climb, per the analysis from Lanterne Rouge, since Vollering was leading it out, but it was still a pretty impressive performance. I’m definitely excited to see who will step up for the Grand-Bornand and Alp d’Huez stages of the Tour de France Femmes this year.

calamitycastle,

You’re right, realini was giving great craic at the start, one to keep an eye on for sure
