GrindingGears,

It doesn’t even function where I live. Literally can’t make it a block without interventions. Part of it is the irrational bullshit from the people that don’t know how to drive, which I don’t blame the car for. We just got our Tesla in March, and I have FSD until July, but I mostly have it turned off in favour of autopilot, which actually works.

I wouldn’t pay $10 a month for it, let alone $100. Not in its current state.

GrindingGears,

Buddy looks like he’s getting ready to take off. He’s got his flaps out and everything!

In all seriousness, no. Where I live, the environment doesn’t really necessitate such measures.

GrindingGears,

Actually I live in Calgary, which is apparently one of the sunniest cities in North America Canada. I’ve just never felt the need for something like this. I got my sunscreen, and my sunnies. My helmet blocks the rest. I dunno…

GrindingGears,

So I’m a bit confused here. Is this that I just have to have a PSN account to play multiplayer, or do I need an account + active subscription?

GrindingGears,

This story speaks volumes, as to the society we currently find ourselves stuck in.

GrindingGears,

I’m still chuckling that no one has mentioned the strength and conditioning staff at this point. How many years in a row has the goaltenders or one of the major players been hurt down the stretch? Shit happens, but at some point someone has to be like, gee we are rather injury prone, maybe we should do something different.

Oh yeah I know, let’s fire the coach.

GrindingGears,

Unfortunately necessary. So what’s next moves wise?

GrindingGears,

I think there’s a lot of incredibly talented people, individually, on that team. But they don’t seem to click well together. There’s a couple of them that should be jettisoned, even if to just open up some space to get more depth through the 3 and 4 lines. And to get those gosh darn special teams going.

My biggest to fire list would actually include the athletic trainers and conditioning team. They need a new strategy there. Especially when it comes to goaltender conditioning.

GrindingGears,

I’d swap Strava for disk brakes. If anything, Strava has been a detriment to cycling by turning a lot of its users into selfish assholes. Quick releases should be on here somewhere as well.

GrindingGears,

I mean technically it is, but I’ve been on the other end of this too. You want to talk about fraud, you should see what some of these northern communities charge for things. Canada Post just absolutely rapes you for shipping too, and that’s 100% what this is about. It’s got nothing to do with fairness.

GrindingGears,

It’s hard to organize bulk shipping in normal locations. It’s absolutely a dumpster fire in some of these northern communities. The one I lived in, the bulk shipping guy was notoriously unreliable. You just can’t risk it sometimes, especially when it comes to anything of value or that has a shelf life. Buddy goes on a two week long bender in Edmonton on the way and meanwhile you and half the community are absolutely fucked waiting for whatever you are getting. Amazon meanwhile wants to charge you twice what the price is for the item to ship it, because Canada Post absolutely bends them over too. And they are pretty unreliable as well. It gets there when it gets there. Might be two days, might be two months. It’s not always an easy problem to solve, even with bulk orders.

GrindingGears,

Northern grocers are horrifying. Don’t need a study to tell me that. Food handling and storage rules? If they are convenient, or if they get a heads up that the inspector is coming (and they get a big heads up on that, because the inspectors need somewhere to stay, plus they probably hit everyone else up on the way). If the item you are after is anything popular or in demand, it’s 2x-4x the price anywhere else is paying.

GrindingGears,

This has to be the 39th iteration of Alberta’s rail transport plan. It’s just a shift and deflect away from her authoritarian changes in other areas last week (mainly her plan to introduce political interference into the municipalities) .

Anytime a conservative government gets caught doing hood-rat shit in Alberta, it feels like step 1 of the playbook is, “Hey look everyone, a Monorail!!”

I’ll believe it when I see it. In the meantime don’t give her credit for shit she didn’t come up with, or never plans to actually follow through with.

Amazon Prime's NHL deal breaches cable TV's last line of defence: live sports (www.cbc.ca)

For years, cable TV has bled viewers and subscribers to streaming giants like Netflix, Apple and Amazon. Now, those same companies are vying to stream live sports, one of the last lines of defence when it comes to audiences paying big bucks for traditional cable packages....

GrindingGears,

Rogers would sell their own mothers to get rid of those broadcasting rights all together. It has not been the boon they thought it was going to be. American side, they’ve been dealing with huge downturns in numbers too (one of their regional broadcast partners even went broke, and most fingers are pointing at the cost of these rights).

So it’s onto the streamers. Who’ll inevitably start putting paywalls on top of it, which will likely drive away quite a lot of fans. I’m already getting sick of being nickel and dimed by these streaming companies, who multiply by the day and their greed has led them to overtake the evil they were supposed to be replacing (cable). It’ll be the start of the NHL downfall in fact, and likely Bettman’s swan song. That’s my prediction.

GrindingGears, (edited )

Can’t say I’m in shock, as I’m a long time Leafs fan that knows no other feeling than disappointment. Save for a couple brief flashes in the pan in the early 90s and the early 2000s, this has been the same ol’ story. Next year, every year.

Nope, what we have here is a cultural problem. I mean how many GMs and Coaches and “superstar” players have we thrown at this now? Same results. If nothing else, the Leafs are ultra reliable at one thing, and that’s losing in the playoffs.

Just once before I die.

So where do the changes need to come? In my opinion, there needs to be a much larger focus on their conditioning staff and their strategies. Change nothing else but this, and I think the results here change a bit. Injuries plague this team like nobody’s business, and it always wreaks havoc in the playoffs.

Injuries + accountability changes for their results = results. That sort of change has to come from the top though. The very top. The fans need to hold them accountable, but that’s going to be really hard when there is such a focus on corporate level attendence at hockey games. When fans keep propelling the broadcasting numbers by continuing to watch. You want actual change here fans? Quit watching the games. Remember Rogers owns a large part of this team. They are already struggling with broadcasting numbers as it is. If you want a change here, force it.

I’m also going to contradict myself here a bit and say I would move on from Keefe (you have to). Dude is a minor league coach at best. But I remain unconvinced this is where the core of the problem lies.

GrindingGears,

Woulda bought one of those 7900xtx’s, if I could friggin have found one.

That maybe might have something to do with why the sales are not so hot. Just sayin…

GrindingGears,

I went with a 4070ti, and honestly this is my last time building a gaming PC, because I just don’t see the advantage anymore vs just buying a PlayStation for like 1/4 of the cost.

GrindingGears,

In my personal case a PS5 would be just fine. I spent a pile of money building an overpowered gaming PC, I’m in my 40s, work too much and have young kids, in retrospect it was kind of stupid. Should have just bought the PlayStation, but anyways, what do you do. It is fun to build and troubleshoot/fine tune them, I do enjoy that part. And I do get the appeal for others that want to mod and the like, it’s just not personally that applicable.

GrindingGears,

Tonight the boys decide where they are going to tee it up Saturday night. Is it going to be a primetime battlefield at the Boston Gardens Saturday night, or on a course of embarrassment somewhere in the Muskokas?

Tonight we find out.

GrindingGears,

I will give this government one thing, and one thing only. They make the most harebrained ass backwards decisions in the world when it comes to policy. But they do respond to public criticism, sometimes. I still am no fan, that’s for sure. But when they are being extra gross, sometimes even these freaks know when to back off, whereas a lot of other administrations would double down and bear the criticism. So bravo for seeing right from wrong, but maybe don’t make stupid ass decisions like this in the first place. Maybe focus a little less on rule by Facebook and corporate supporters, and focus more on the people who got you there, and what their actual needs are.

GrindingGears,

For sure, I’m just pointing out this one bleak but relevant fact. Also your list is way too short.

GrindingGears,

Sega Master System. A kid never forgets his first video game system, and nothing has quite scratched that itch ever since.

GrindingGears,

Oh absolutely there are fuckheads in every province. Statistics will definitely show you that. It’s the vitrol that the opinions come with, at least in my super non scientific, totally anecdotal observations, that always takes me by surprise a bit. Albertas are really really passionate with their ugliness, in my observations, and that’s absolutely unique to this province. I think even people just observing can agree with that. You are right too, that it’s very likely the vocal minority skewing the perception, but the perception is still the perception. I’ve met some really great Albertans, and some really shitty Ontarians and BC’ers. But the ugliness casts a shadow here.

GrindingGears,

I was just stating a fact, and not my opinions whether it’s right or wrong as a whole. If I remember correctly, it was taken away as part of the changes that preceded the Carbon Tax Rebate, which in turn actually likely nets you more money in the long run.

As for the labor laws, they are shit in this country as a whole, and no I’m not OK with that. What do you want me to do about it though? I vote accordingly, it’s everyone else that’s fucking idiots.

GrindingGears,

Reddit is at end stage enshitification. I don’t even know how people tolerate that app or the website. It speaks volumes when there was a robust third party access marketplace.

I just wish the local content would relocate somewhere else. Once people wake up, and it does, that’s it for Reddit.
