"One thing to note is they also encrypt the e-mail subject, whereas (for example) Proton Mail does not." - protonmail does encrypt their mails if you send it to another protonmail address, and skiff is doing the exact same thing.

Sucuk,
Sucuk avatar

Proton Mail encrypts the content of the mails, not the subject. So even if it is a Proton Mail-to-Proton Mail conversation the subject is not encrypted. Skiff also encrypts the subject of the mail in a Skiff-to-skiff conversation.

proton-to-proton-mails are end-to-end-encrypted and so are password protected mails sent outside proton servers. i once had to reset the password of my kids protonmail and all the mails - including the subject - had become unreadable.

Hmm, I see, my bad.
They do encrypt the subject and recipient/sender's e-mails but they are not e2ee.
Thanks for the correction.

Version,

Proton Mail does not encrypt the subject line afaik.

But yes, the content is encrypted.

Any service that discusses Crypto is a no for me.

QuazarOmega, to privacy in What do you think about Skiff? Is it worth checking out?

I just find their name funny, it’s so close to meaning “gross” in Italian, I hope that won’t be a bad omen

CrypticCoffee, to privacy in What do you think about Skiff? Is it worth checking out?

Is it just me that keeps seeing questions about Skiff that look more like adverts?

It… doesn’t feel… organic.

Sucuk,
Sucuk avatar

you know, i kinda over-saturated the positives of skiff now that i read this thing again, it feels like an advert. But I am in no way affliated with Skiff, I haven't even signed up yet, I just listed their services and positives.

I should have signed up and tested it for a bit, that's my bad, I apologize.

CrypticCoffee,

May I ask what motivated you to write extensively on a service you do not use?

How did you hear about them, and why did you feel the need to document this so extensively?

Sucuk,
Sucuk avatar

I wrote this because I liked their services (because of their features) and wanted to know the community's opinion on them.
I don't really remember how I found out about them, but I think it was an article or video.
I wouldn't consider this thing I wrote "extensive", other than the Proton competitor stuff, I just listed some stuff on their website and some of my opinions.

Nia, to privacy in What do you think about Skiff? Is it worth checking out?

I’ve been keeping my eye on them, I personally am not going to use them until they get some reputation both to know if they can be trusted, and to see if they won’t randomly disappear or shut down.

They refer to themselves as “Web3-native” and are affiliated with cryptocurrency stuff for anyone that this plays a factor into deciding to try them or not. Personally it makes me hesitant about them, but to each their own.

Anyone that promises encrypted mail is a liar. Until the email consortium or whatever they’re called offer encryption as standard, all email is sent as plain text.

Version,

Yes, but it still protects against data breaches. You still have to trust the provider though.

eager_eagle,
@eager_eagle@lemmy.world avatar

It’s not lying, just deceptive at first glance. Like Proton, what’s promised is E2E encrypted between users of that same platform, which is often a really narrow slice of the total amount of emails. They are not claiming to encrypt external emails before sending them.

Varen,
Varen avatar

idk about Skiff, but Proton also tells to e2ee mails to/from outside if they‘re using PGP…

pineapplelover,

Proton can send e2ee emails to domains outside as well. It does this by sending a link to the password protected email hosted on its servers so it remains as e2ee and can’t be scanned on outside servers.

Never got on board with email but the pages functionality is amazing and doesn’t exist anywhere else (at least with e2e and real time collaboration). Not sure where I’m going to go

Dang. Is Proton the most reliable alternative when deGoogling, then? Skiff looked promising, aside from having kind of a dumb name.

I just started using Skiff a couple months ago. I enjoyed the quick alias features and the multiple aliases to keep everything separated. I am really sad to see this happen so soon after joining.

MagneticFusion,

custom domains are a savior. provider shuts down? thats fine, switch to another provider. just a pain to forward all ur emails to the new provider.

i moved my stuff from skiff to proton mail plus

Swarfega,

You can work around the need to go around updating all sites with your new email address… at least the next time you need to change your email address.

I use SimpleLogin to create a unique alias (on my own domain) for each website. When I finally migrated to Proton all I had to do was add the proton email address to SimpleLogin and delete my old GMail address to get it to point to Proton (I started migrating to aliases before moving away from GMail). Likewise if I ever move in the future I only need to update SimpleLogin. I was looking to move to Skiff when my Proton renewal was due!

To set this up I had to obviously update every single website which was very time consuming. However I have much better protection now as email addresses are disposable should a site start spamming me. The only site that actually knows my Proton email address is Bitwarden, Proton itself and SimpleLogin.

Looking in my account I have over 300 aliases. Crazy.

I’d never heard of Skiff, but the reason I use Logseq instead of Notion is because it’s AGPL open source and you can keep control of your data.

racoon,

Is this similar to obsidian but FOSS?

jelloeater85,
@jelloeater85@lemmy.world avatar

I use Obsidian alot, they are very different in how they work as far as I can tell. Obsidian is more like a pure notebook with a HUGE amount of useful plugins. I use the KanBan and OCR functions alot with their Google-esq search.

davel, (edited )
@davel@lemmy.ml avatar

I’m told they’re similar, but I’ve never used Obsidian.

Logseq vs Obsidian - which PKM tool should you use?

Logseq is a block-based outliner, allowing you to organise information into a tree-like structure using bullet-points. You can think of it as a mind-map, but for text. This allows users to quickly structure and add hierarchy to their information by indenting information, and to also move quickly between different branches of information.

[…]

In contrast to the outliner approach, Obsidian is a page-based application that functions like a long-form text editor, similar to a Microsoft Word document. The key advantage over traditional word processors is the instant searchability of all files and folders, as well as seamless linking between different pieces of information.

How to use Obsidian and Logseq together and why Markdown matters

amanneedsamaid,

Same reason I use emacs org-mode 👍

I’ve never heard of it, but sad to hear they sold out. Just as a note totally love there icons. I miss icons feeling like someone put some real effort and love into them.

Edit: Damn they’re just sunsetting the products and services? That’s rough.

jlow,

Yeah, the icons are really cool, I like the chunky, 3d-look.
