BudgieMania, to SquaredCircle in Dark Side Of The Ring Season 5 Topics Reportedly Revealed

Man I'm not ready for the Kurt Angle episode.

I remember being a "TNA kid" in the mid to late 2000's, and thinking that Angle was not human, he would straight up wrestle at 120% the intensity of a normal wrestler during those years.
Around 2009/2010, there were increasing rumors that Angle was seen limping and struggling to move backstage, but when the entrance music would start, he would shake it off, endure it just enough to wrestle his usual style of match, and go back just in time for the adrenaline to wear off.
"No way", I thought, "he's still moving as fast as ever, he's still as explosive as ever, those rumors must be fake".
Little did I know, not only were the rumors true, but the real toll that continuing to work at that level was taking on him was worse than any rumors could have guessed.

In the next 5 years, he aged 15.

He's a cautionary tale for any wrestler that thinks about mortgaging their body to wrestle at an increased level... Mortgages have brutal interests.

Brain, to squaredcircle in WWE SmackDown Moving To USA Network Earlier Than Expected

Fox has a better deal with actual sports, they are replacing WWE with College sports and later they are planning to use Rock’s UFL, which will likely pull better ad rates even if they get smaller ratings. When it comes to dollars and cents, well it’s just better business to cut their ties and move on.

The caveat here, the UFL to Friday on Fox deal is just a rumor at this point, but I have no reason to doubt it as the merger and leaving NBC rumors came true.

GeekFTW, to squaredcircle in MLW had to turn fans away before Intimidation Games aired as the event was sold out, a first in the promotion's history.

Former UFC fighter Matt Riddle has found his footing in the wrestling business following his release from World Wrestling Entertainment in September 2023. At New Japan Pro Wrestling’s “The New Beginning in Sapporo” event, he captured the NJPW World Television Championship from Hiroshi Tanahashi, and he recently made his first title defense at an event with so much hype behind it that fans had to be turned away at the door.

That show was Major League Wrestling’s Intimidation Games, which took place on February 29 at the Melrose Ballroom in New York City. The show had so much demand, according to PWInsider Elite, that MLW had to turn fans away before the show aired, as the event was sold out — a first in the promotion’s history. MLW were obviously extremely pleased with the New York crowd and credited the increased interest in the show to Riddle’s star power (he was the most over person on the show in terms of ring entrances, per PWI), MLW founder and CEO Court Bauer playing closer attention to booking, and the inclusion of CMLL star Mistico, who defeated Rocky Romero for the MLW World Middleweight Championship. The show was headlined by an MLW World Heavyweight Championship match between two Japanese legends, as champion Satoshi Kojima successfully defended his title against Minoru Suzuki. Riddle and the stars of CMLL were also present for the “Once Upon a Time in New York” taping that took place on the same day, which will air on YouTube on March 16.

Back in October, MLW launched a joint partnership with CMLL and New Japan Pro-Wrestling, the home promotion of Kojima and Suzuki. If Intimidation Games is anything to go by, it seems from the early returns that MLW is benefiting greatly from the relationship, which could eventually bear even sweeter fruit as CMLL and NJPW are also partners with All Elite Wrestling.

I think I’m most excited for black Saturday. I’ve read small things about it, but so little that I’ll learn a lot from that episode.

GeekFTW,
GeekFTW avatar

Same, I know what happened but a nice episode will be good to watch. As for the others, I expect Sandman's will be funny and New Jack-esque, with ya know..less attempted murder. Chris Adams will be a bit of a trip and I expect Bagwell will be sad and I'm taking bets whether they mention he was a giggalo or not lol.

ImADifferentBird,
@ImADifferentBird@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

I wonder if they’ll mention that brief period of time when Bagwell went viral on Twitter for being an old time wrestler who doesn’t have awful opinions about current cultural issues, until it turned out that all of that was being done by a PR guy who then ripped people off on merch and stuff.

IIRC, Nyla Rose and Kidd Bandit got roped into that before it all went pear shaped.

kessleragain,

@ImADifferentBird @GeekFTW oof. I missed the part about the PR guy ripping people off.

kessleragain,

Yeah, I never watched ECW, but have heard a lot and seen Sandman in previous seasons. I’m sure I’ll learn a lot and happy there’s no attempted murder lol. I’m glad that not all the episodes these days are just depressing.

MolochAlter, to SquaredCircle in Vince Russo Believes Tony Khan Paid WBD For AEW Collision, Thinks He'll Buy Network - Wrestling Inc.

People really need to learn that “billionaire” does not mean “infinte money”. There were rumors that TK was going to buy WWE and even those were not plausible, but this is hundreds of times less plausible.

He might acquire some stake so he has a say in the board’s decisions but there’s materially no way he can just outright buy one of the largest media networks in the world, especially since buyouts of that magnitude generally have to outpay the net worth by a fair bit to ensure the board takes the offer, like what Microsoft is doing with actiblizzion.

adduc, to wrestling in Freddie Prinze: Amazon and Disney are interested in WWE

I'm not sure I buy the logic of "if amazon's interested in my promotion, they must be interested in WWE." Amazon might be willing to invest a few million for a few years of a studio production like Lucha Underground, but not interested in bidding hundreds of millions for the rights to WWE.

ogsaint,

I agree with that if his statement were just based on conjecture alone, but I think he was commenting on rumors that already existed. I think it was the NY Post that originally said Amazon and Disney would be interested.

Vince Russo is full of shit, but I would welcome Tony Khan buying out WBD. He couldn't do a worse job running it than David Zaslav has.

Sounds legit, I mean it's from the same guy that thought Judy Bagwell on a pole was a great idea! And we all know that is an all-time great.

It's things like this that give an insight as to why Russo booked the storylines he did - genuine belief that the world works the way his brain does.

Rakust, to SquaredCircle in Vince Russo Believes Tony Khan Paid WBD For AEW Collision, Thinks He'll Buy Network - Wrestling Inc.

It's a bit far fetched. I think Vinnie is on the hard seltzer or he's working off of an outdated idea of what networks are looking for. About the only thing that draws TV ratings these days is live sports, and wrestling is probably the cheapest live "sport" there is.
