In your area/country, did you have a word or phrase to describe the static white noise on a television set not tuned to a channel? (upload.wikimedia.org)
Bonus points if there’s a known onomatopoeia to describe the sound.

I have nothing else to ask in this community..... how did I get here? 🤔 (upload.wikimedia.org)
For the past year, I’ve been immersed in the topic of Privacy. I switched to Linux, flashed my phone to LineageOS, changed all my software to one that respects privacy, switched my family and most* friends to Signal, started hating megacorporations and pretty much every government in the world, asked a lot of questions on...

Why doesn't Signal Desktop support reproducible builds? (upload.wikimedia.org)
Why are reproducible builds only on one platform (Android)? Desktop version could have a built-in backdoor and data would be transferred not from the phone, but from the PC)

Hot take: Users without a profile pick are mildlyinfuriating (upload.wikimedia.org)
For real. I can never understand why some of ye don’t have a cool pfp. You could even get some cool background art on your profile as well. Really jazz it up, ya know. But I swear 90% instead opt for the default lemmy logo. How uncreative and boring. I can’t even tell most of you people apart.
I'm not worried about saving my location. Are you? (upload.wikimedia.org)
In the privacy community there are services, programs for private maps use. Some even suggest using the phone without a SIM card (which is quite possible, but you can get into trouble). But I don’t use them, as my geolocation is already tracked by an advanced camera system in my city, by my cell provider via triangulation....

LineageOS is not private (upload.wikimedia.org)
WHY? I’ve heard a lot that LineageOS cannot be called a private system. That it is more about extending the life of old devices. Can you tell me specifically point by point why it is not private? And I’m sure it’s better than stock phone firmware in terms of privacy.

Should I build LineageOS myself? (upload.wikimedia.org)
I understand that probably there is little interest if you are a device ROM maintainer to embed a backdoor into it. But it’s still possible. Lineage has a fairly simple and open build process. Should I do it on my own? Or should I trust the maintainers and not bother? What are your thoughts?

TIL about Moonbow: Nature's Rare and Beautiful Phenomenon Similar to Rainbow (upload.wikimedia.org)
A moonbow is a rare and stunning natural phenomenon that occurs when moonlight is refracted and reflected off water droplets in the air, creating a colorful arc of light in the night sky. Similar to a rainbow, moonbows are formed when light is dispersed into its various colors, but they are much rarer and more elusive, as they...
