Is there a #peony community on masto? I received flowers as a gift, and now I NEED to know what this one is, so I can try to grow them. I live in Interior #Alaska, so any zone 4 and up varieties are out right off the bat…
From what I’ve read, I think this would be considered a “semi-double” bloom? [edit] After looking online for HOURS, I'm pretty sure it's not a Buckeye Belle or a Chief Black Hawk. Black Panther is my current leading candidate.
Still more #peony nonsense today! Seeing some pink showing up in the dumpling center bits… When does the bloom stop changing on a daily basis? 😂 When do I get to take one last photo and say “OK, this is for sure its final form!” #BloomScrolling
@sollat Oh that’s a big change isn’t it! Wow. I guess I’d better wait until it is definitely 100% done opening before I rule a few of these options out.
I’ve googled “dark red peony,” “dark burgundy peony,” “burgundy red peony,” “black-red peony,” I’m running out of color descriptors. 😂

It might depend on the strain. It was quite a shock when I looked at pictures side by side from the whole bloom time. I noticed it fading fast at the end.
It might be worth showing the picture to someone at a nursery. Sometimes they have contacts and know the right questions to ask.
@sollat Yep, my next step is emailing photos to growers around the state. I figured I’d give it another day or two of taking photos to make sure I caught any identifying details first.

This one grows happily in the UK and is called Buckeye Belle, but isn't as dark as yours.
@bowreality@Dianotron You can still see some red petals mixed in with the stamens on the second photo there though. This definitely has none of that going on.
@RettopNoj That’s why I’m hoping there’s a resident expert peony gardener somewhere in the fediverse who might see my post. 🙂 When I found a photo of the Chief Black Hawk variety earlier today I thought that might be what I have, but they have different coloration in the center, and appear to have fewer layers of petals too.
