“We must have this national conversation. How are we going to deal with long ?”

Featured post: Medical experts and those suffering from this challenging condition are demanding better—more research and healthier air to breathe. https://www.texasobserver.org/long-covid-texas-clearing-the-air/

@TexasObserver Good article but no need to call long covid mysterious. About half of cases qualify for a diagnosis of myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome, and most og the rest can be classified by damage to specific organs, lungs, heart etc.

@brianvastag @TexasObserver Apparently they're using "mysterious" as a synonym for "incompletely understood." Not the best word choice, but at least they're paying attention.

@BruceMirken @brianvastag Thank you, we appreciate the feedback on our word choice here. Hopefully, the article itself is a bit more precise.

I don't recall ever seeing such a gracious acceptance of critique on an open forum. That's class.

@axeshun @BruceMirken @brianvastag Part of journalism is being open to admitting you didn't get something exactly right. We're happy to be here where the engagement is typically so thoughtful.

@TexasObserver Texas Observer has done some good reporting around COVID. They broke the story of unqualified coroners misclassifying COVID deaths.

@TexasObserver American health care has declined substantially since Covid started. It was bad before. It’s abysmal now. There are many conditions the masses have begged for research & help for. America hates disabled people. America hates health care. The response to Covid wasn’t an accident. Americans are really blind to the system it seems.

@DEDGirl folks spent a few days clapping for doctors & nurses and other front line caregivers but never gave them the support they actually needed. I believe you're right, our culture is really twisted up about this.

@TexasObserver still about 800 people a week dying at this thing, last I heard. I don't think we have any way to estimate how many long covid victims there are walking around.

TexasObserver,
@TexasObserver@texasobserver.social avatar

@wbpeckham It's probably impossible to fully measure, but there's a few estimates at the situation we use in the article—15% of Canadians report some LC symptoms, for example, and some research suggests your chance of having LC symptioms reaches about 40% on your third infection. So easily millions of poeple. Dr. Al-Aly compares the economic impact to the dotcom bust.
