@danhon Even the most thoughtful political comms professionals I have worked with seem to be stuck on "eblast" and "email blast" and I just can't 😂

The solidarity at stores between masked people is pretty funny sometimes 🥰. I ran into a Whole Foods to drop off a return from Amazon (no, this sweater isn't 100% cotton, as a matter of fact, it's made of effing plastic, thank you), and an older gentleman and I were like "Hang in there!" -- "Yup! You too!" ❤️

@rolandelli Love those interactions!

Turns out, trying to squash dissent tends to make things worse, not better.

(This could be applied to a lot of things in the news right now. Pick your favorite.)

Anecdata on the prevalence of masking across recent travels:

Significantly more common in London than Malmo, Copenhagen, and Helsinki -- saw just 6 other people masked across many thousands of people, 2 of which were in chinstrap mode 😂 And at least three times as prevalent in San Francisco than in London.

Many factors at play, no doubt. I find it fascinating! Makes me grateful for what we've got here in the SF Bay Area.

@redchrision ooh interesting! I've only seen Sweden's entry so far, looking forward to being surprised by everything else 😁

josh,
@josh@josh.tel avatar

@andrew yessss, we've been waiting for it rotate back through Sweden since 2016, so happy it's finally come to pass!

And as a bonus we got to go to our dear friends' wedding and meet some of my coworkers in person while we're at it 😁 Cramming as much as we can into this trip 😂

josh,
@josh@josh.tel avatar

@redchrision ok that is awesome 🤩 my other half goes deep on geeking out about it too, keeps stats on expected vs actual results and all that. Can't wait to check out your project when we get back to our computers!

@flameeyes Right! There are a number of examples like that from metro areas around the globe.

Remarkably consistent pattern as to who still masks, at least in the anglo countries I've been in over the last two years:

Mostly people of color, older folks, and when it's young white people usually disability is involved.

Common thread, I suspect, is that these are the folks who stand to lose more if they get sick. I would that there were a greater showing of solidarity, but rugged individualism and all that 🤷🏻

josh,
@josh@josh.tel avatar

@emjonaitis I really really appreciate you sharing that 🤍 Indeed, that is also one of the two categories I fall under that significantly informs my decision to keep masking.

josh,
@josh@josh.tel avatar

@daniele_Hesse likewise, such a wonderful feeling to not get sick!

josh,
@josh@josh.tel avatar

Observations now from Denmark and Sweden, levels of masking consistent with what I know of their public health authorities' approach to the pandemic:

Out of the thousands of people I've seen here so far, only a single person wearing a mask other than us. And I suspect they were also a tourist.

josh,
@josh@josh.tel avatar

@yawnbox Very interesting! Between this and remembering what I read about the Netherlands legislating against mask requirements, I'm sensing that this may be a quality shared across a number of countries in Europe?

    @inquiline here's hoping! As I've been reading more about it I'm learning it's no wonder it has been struggling -- I also needed it in a better draining pot, and to water it differently than I do the ficus lyrata! Whoops 😅

    Two cuttings now in my plant rehab zone 🤞🏻

    Does your public library use Overdrive/Libby for ebooks or audiobooks? ⚠️

    In the US and Canada, the answer is probably yes. And you should speak to your library staff and commission about it.

    Libby is now owned by a private equity firm & making sketchy changes: https://buttondown.email/ninelives/archive/the-coming-enshittification-of-public-libraries/

    The latest development is that their overbroad privacy policy allows them to sell your borrowing history to advertisers: https://infosec.exchange/@longobord/112243098104196246

    Thank you @karawynn and @longobord!

    It has never been more important to include attribution or cite our sources.

    Not just the right thing to do, it also helps with information and media literacy at a time when convincing bullshit is easier than ever to produce.

    josh, to opensource
    @josh@josh.tel avatar

    Hoo boy. I'm not naming names because I don't want to fan the flames, but the knives are out:

    Events around have rightly emboldened volunteer-driven open source projects to take their hyper-wealthy downstream users to task.

    Wild to think that many large companies have hollowed out their open source program offices (OSPOs), the internal teams who have been working on addressing these resource issues.

    I fear this will get worse before it gets better.
